I couldn't make the game yesterday so
here is a selection of match reports from around the Internet.

Typical pre-season game. First half was;
4-4-2 Culkin Forbes, Carlisle, Delaney (triallist from West Ham),
Brennan (triallist from Peterboro) Ainsworth, Bircham, Palmer,
Newey (triallist from Leeds) Sabin, Gallen.
Second Half Day Daly, Shittu, Delaney,
Newey Oli, Bean, Padula, Sabin Furlong, Pacquette Ifura came on
after 25 mins at right back, with Daly replacing Padula in midfield
and Gino replacing Newey at left back, who went off.
Nondescript game - great long shot from
Ainsworth well saved in first half and Ainsworth should have hit
the target with a free header in the last minute but headed over.
Second half they were clean through once but Day saved well, that
was about it. Standard pre-season fare.
Delaney at the back won everything. He's
6'6" and looked good, but do we need him?
Newey looked OK - reminded me of Burgess.
Brennan looked lightweight at fullback.
Daly was the best of the youngsters, showing
that he has some idea about playing football, passing on the ground
and trying to pass to feet rather than just lumping it forward.
Pacquette was poor, lost the ball all the
time and didn't use his attributes, but they are all a long way
from match fitness understandably.
Sabin was very fast - but not a lot else.
As I say, Ainsworth looked a class above
everything else on the pitch, although Kev's first touch made
him stand out too. Bean won the ball well in midfield, but distribution
was generally poor.

A typical pre season friendly really but
an enjoyable afternoon nonetheless. My first visit to Farnborough
town FC, and it's quite a pleasant little ground. The club has
been through a bit of a rough patch in recent years, missing money,
in debt etc (uh oh) but according to a couple of the locals I
spoke with everyone there at the club is now looking forward to
the new season.
One lad was telling me how with Leroy
having gone back there will be playing alongside his (Leroy's)
cousin but I can't remember the name of the player now. The ground
has two stands and as per usual at non league grounds, it was
nice to be able to walk around the ground at half time to exchange
ends.
The first half saw us start with Culkin,
Forbes, Carlisle, Delaney (the chap on trial from West Ham), another
trialist whose name I didn't catch, Palmer, Bircham, Ainsworth,
Newey (another trialist) with Sabin and Gallen up front.
Nothing much to report from the first
half though Ainsworth did look sharp and for me, seeing an out
and out winger playing for QPR was a real treat :-) He was also
unlucky not to score after he belted a shot at goal but the Farnborough
keeper made a very good save to tip the ball over the bar.
In the second half 8 changes were made
to the side with just Sabin, Newey and Delaney keeping their places
in the starting line up. Day, Shittu, Daly, Padula, Oli, bean,
Furlong and Pacquette replacing the other 8.
Eric Sabin was the only player who played
the full 90 minutes. He looked ok at times and it will be interesting
to see how he gets on once the season truly begins. Wes Daly showed
some nice little touches and was unlucky not to score after he
hit a shot just outside the area, but once again, the Farnborough
keeper had his best gloves on as he made another very good save.
There were a couple of shaky moments for
us, especially the last couple of minutes when Chris Day pulled
off a double save. But all in all I would say that today's game
proved to be a useful exercise to the players. The game was played
under a heat of 90 degrees (and it certainly felt it as well)
and the £20 (or thereabouts) I paid on the admittance price, petrol
and programme money was money well spent because I can certainly
think of worse ways to have spent a Saturday afternoon :-)

Had a pretty good seat in the main stand
so managed, with the help of some paper follow proceedings. On
the whole some usual strong individual performances from Bircham,
Danny, Clarke, Furlong, Pacquette, Daly, Bean ...yet some not
so good performances.
The first half started with the following
line up - Culkin Forbes - Clarke - Clive Delaney - Brennan Newey
- Palmer - Bircham - Ainsworth Gallen - Sabin
From a very disappointing first half the
big centre back Delaney stood out straight away. Great in the
air (as you would have thought) and great communication with the
rest of the side. Chances were very limted and the game as a whole
very stop-start by possible the most over-fussy ref in the world,
who forgot it was a contact sport and gave 4 free kicks in the
first minute.
Ainsworth was motm from the first half
team, if that make sense, with some excellent runs and one great
shot. Palmer gave the ball away time and time again and was very
very slow. Bircham played well and got stuck in as much as the
ref would allow.
At half time Brennan recived hand treatment
and what stood out about him was how young he looked. On the whole
he did alright but no way in Paudula or Williams' league. One
for the future perhaps is the thinking.
Second half and the team lined up as -
Day Newey - Shittu - Deleney - Daly Sabin - Padula - Bean - Oli
Furlong - Pacquette
The second half was much better with both
us and FTFC going for it a bit more. Furlong looked fit, as did
Pacquette. Daly swapped with Padula and realy was involved in
all our good moves with one excellent shot late on. Bean and Oli
impressed, though if only Oli had a end product !!
The good news...
Good workout with some good solid performances
from a number of players.
MOTM was Delaney from WHU, another good
find from Olly.
So, the bad news....
Eric Sabin - Good god, he was poor, no
wonder he only scored 9 goals last year. He looked lost and all
the players had to tell him where to position himself. I'm not
joking, this fella at 28 years of age will on todays evidance
offer us nothing at all.
Steve Palmer - Captain and in central midfeild
in the first half is a concern. Please not another ever present
season from him. Today all his weaknesses were on show.
Tom Newey did alright, though better at
ful back in the second half., but imo will not offer us anything.
No new shirts :-(

First Friendly Ends In Stalemate
By Simon Skinner
The surroundings couldn't have been much
different from the last R's game that any of us saw. From the
Millennium Stadium to Cherrywood Road, home of Farnborough Town,
in just seven short weeks. It was a shame the game didn't quite
capture the same level of excitement.
The team that took the field was a mixture
of old, new and potential soon to becomes. The blistering Hampshire
sun, whilst great for the fans basking in it must have been rotten
for the players and the game rarely got out of second gear. There
was really very little to report in the first half.
Rangers' only real effort of note came
courtesy of an Ainsworth piledriver that the Farnborough keeper
did well to turn over the bar. Gallen also forced a save from
him and Sabin should have done but failed to get his feet where
he needed them.
At the other end Farnborough seemed to
have a fair amount of joy against trialist left back Killian Brennan.
He was beaten in the air more than once and will be hoping for
a better showing if he gets another run out.
Partnering Carlisle in central defence
was giant Clive Delaney. The Irishman, released by West Ham looked
excellent as he won every header and was strong in the tackle.
He was one of only two players to complete the ninety minutes,
Sabin being the other.
Half time brought eight changes and no
upturn in the entertainment factor. Richard
Pacquette, Paul Furlong, Marcus Bean and Wes Daly all fired high
over the bar as the substitute keeper had n easy time of it. Daly
came close later in the game with a low drive that beat the keeper
but slid just wide of the right hand post.
Rangers were denied a chance to win the
game when the ref failed to give a nailed on penalty for a foul
on Dennis Oli. He had cut in from his right wing, bamboozled the
defender and found both his legs taken from beneath him. The ref
probably didn't give it as he was forty yards back up the pitch
and well off the pace of the game. In truth he was pretty poor
and many of his decisions left a decent sized crowd scratching
their heads.
This was very much a chance for the players
to feel their way back into playing and I would think that each
game will bring an improvement in sharpness and touch. Of the
trialists Delaney looked good as did left sided player Tom Newey.
Brennan seemed a little lost at times but I would rather see him
again before giving a damning report.
As for the new boys, Ainsworth looked
the part immediately, Sabin didn't. He showed glimpses of his
pace but did little with the ball either up front or in his second
half left wing berth. Maybe he was another feeling his way back
in but he certainly looked as though there was plenty of feeling
to be done.
On to Aylesbury now and an evening game
that the players will probably enjoy a hell of a lot more than
this one.

HOLLOWAY PLEASED AFTER OPENING FRIENDLY
Over 1000 fans came out to watch Rangers
first pre-season game against Farnborough, the result was held
to a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes.
The Rangers boss was pleased with performance
after having the squad back in training for five days. "Having
only been back in training this week, our aim was to have every
player get at least 45 minutes each so that they all got a decent
run-out. They have been working hard in training and the game
was a good work-out for them after their first full five days
back."
There were several new faces out on the
pitch, which included new signings Gareth Ainsworth and Eric Sabin
and trialists Clive Delany, Tom Newey and Killian Brennan.
Commented Holloway, "It was important for
us today to try and get the new lads clear about what we do defensively.
I asked them to concentrate on this and they all worked well together
keeping a clean sheet, which was good in such hot conditions."
"I've seen some good things out there today
with players showing some excellent work rates and attitudes."
Rangers continue their pre-season training
at a RAF training facility over the next few days. The next game
will be away to Aylesbury United on Monday night, kick-off 7:45pm.
