After a game like the one yesterday it is hard to know where to start in writing a match report. It had everything, drama, excitement, quality football, poor defending, comedy goals and left the 2,500 QPR fans who made the trip feeling delighted to get a point but yet gutted to throw away two when the game was very winnable.

The mood before the game was pretty confident as fans packed the Metrodome leisure centre before the game drinking the bar dry and getting ready for a massive game. Team news began to drift in that Matthew Rose was replacing the injured Clarke Carlisle and Steve Palmer came in for Marcus Bean who dropped to the bench.

Rangers started slowly, as they so often seem to do in away games and Barnsley seemed well up for the challenge in front of a very quiet home support.

Rangers looked very suspect to the long ball between the full back and centre back and we were being caught out several times with Gnohere getting into a real mess. It comes to something when Rose is looking the better of the central defensive pairing but the boo boys favorite was clearing his lines and having a decent game back in the starting line up.

Rangers were looking dangerous on the break and we forced a few corners with Furlong and Cureton chasing what looked like lost causes. Furlong went close heading against the bar after good work by Ainsworth and the Rangers winger smashed in a typical long range volley, which was off target.

Barnsley were winning plenty of free kicks and corners and we were struggling to defend against them. A free kick from the edge of the box was deflected over by Bircham but from the corner our inability to defend cost us again. The ball was floated into the box and Rangers stood and watched as Craig Ireland couldn't believe his luck and tucked it away from close range.

Thankfully this woke Rangers up and we started attacking with a bit more force. Gallen and Cureton swapped positions to allow our top scorer to play up front and Barnsley struggled to cope with this pairing. A neat ball by Gallen put Furlong through but the keeper saved at Furlongs feet and injured himself in the collision. This forced the keeper off the pitch and he was replaced by young keeper Daniel Alcock who looked very nervous from the start.

It wasn't long before we were level with a comedy goal. Furlong once again chased a lost cause and hooked the ball back across goal with no Rangers player alert enough to get anywhere near it. Still we didn't need to be as Anthony Kay knocked it past his own keeper and as they scrambled to clear the ball off the line the linesmen flagged for a goal and we were level.

Rangers were on top now but didn't really press home the advantage, as the half became very scrappy. Both sides were going in with some late challenges and the ref needed to be strong at this point. The home fans were going mad at every decision going against them but the ref was giving as much to them as he was to us. Gallen went close to a goal against his old club finding himself in space and shooting straight at the keeper.

Furlong had the last chance of the half as he headed over the bar and the mood was still confident among the traveling QPR fans as we went for the half time cuppa. The second half saw the now traditional pre match huddle by the Rangers team and a real determination to take the game to the home team. Rangers were dominant from the kick off and gave the away fans plenty to cheer about.

We were getting into good positions out wide and a nice ball by Cureton saw Furlong clean though. The offside flag stayed down and Furlong tried to lob the ball over the keeper but Alcock tipped it over. Furlong had so much time he really should have scored.

Bircham was running the midfield with a superb display and he was becoming the target of the Barnsley fans hatred. Several late tackles on him went unpunished as the home crowd decided Bircham was a cheat. Shame they didn’t bother to make as much noise for their own team as they did to boo Bircham.

Cureton found himself in a great position to hand us the lead. Gallen picked out a lovely cross to him at the far post but he fired wide. Bignot and Cureton then combined to set the former Reading striker through but he miss hit his shot and saw it go wide again.

Barnsley couldn’t cope with us so decided to start kicking us. An awful high tackle from behind on Cureton saw a 20 man brawl erupt. The referee lost control and instead of sending off Hayward for an awful tackle he just booked him and Furlong for the fight.

Bircham was next for the hit list with a terrible tackle from behind that the linesmen and referee managed to miss and awarded a throw in to the home side. The determination to rise above this and win the game was evident as we poured forward looking for a winner.

The goal finally came with 15 minutes left although it felt a lot later than that. A long throw by Palmer was half cleared and the Rangers captain put a cross in which saw the keeper flap at and Furlong had the simple task to tapping into and empty net. The Rangers fans went mental sensing a vital three points were on the way and boy did we deserve them. Rangers looked for a third with the offside flag denying Gallen before Cureton found himself clean through again but his finish let him down and the keeper parried his effort.

A look at the watch saw we still have eight minutes to hang on but we were so comfortable it would have taken the most pessimistic fan alive to predict what was going to happen next. After dominating the half for some reason we began to sit back and the arrival of Danny Nardiello (on loan from Man Utd) seemed to raise the spirits of the home crowd.

Rangers began to sit back and back and had everyone in our own half inviting Barnsley to equalise. Holloway then made the strange decision to take off Jamie Cureton and bring on Marcus Bean. We looked confused as to who should be on the right wing now and we ended up with no one on the right and before we could sort something out disaster struck.

A free kick into the box was cleared and Rangers kept everybody back to allow them back onto us. A ball to the far post saw Nardiello totally unmarked and looking a few yards offside and he buried his chance past Lee Camp. The home fans were now celebrating and Rangers fans couldn’t believe it.

We now had a very defensive midfield and needed another goal but we continued to sit back seemingly happy with a draw. A stupid foul by Arthur saw him give a way a free kick 25 yards out in the last minute.

Hearts in mouth time and Barnsley put two players right in front of Lee Camp to block his view before they ran out slowly to play themselves offside. The Tactic worked as Murphy curled in a brilliant free kick to beat Camp who was a little slow to react. Barnsley fans went mad again goading the QPR fans and celebrating as if they had won the league.

QPR fans began to leave and the board came up to announce three minutes injury time. Surely we’d blown it now and we were about to enter the most crucial three minutes of the season so far.

Nervy defending at the far post won Rangers a corner and Holloway quickly brought on Tony Thorpe for Bean who I don’t think touched the ball whilst he was on. Thorpe made a nuisance of himself in the box and the ball into the box fell to Furlong. Time seemed to stand still as he placed his shot into the bottom corner and the QPR fans exploded with joy.

Fans ran on the pitch hugging Furlong and Bircham and others just ran around screaming yes. We had done it and turned three points into none and back to one again.

Barnsley had one last corner to finish the game off but Rose cleared and we went home happy with a point.

It could and should have been so much better after an excellent second half performance but our inability to defend and our insistence on sitting on a one goal lead really cost us and we’ve really let Bristol City off the hook and kept them in the automatic promotion race.

Onto Stockport next which won’t be easy but if we attack as we did in the second half at Barnsley we should be too strong for them.

Man of the Match: Paul Furlong

Players Ratings

31. Lee Camp: Perhaps could have done better with the third goal but another good performance in the Rangers goal. 7/10

12. Marcus Bignot: Very solid again. He defended well and got forward with some good support play and neat passes into the forwards. 8/10

23. Richard Edghill: Worked hard and gave a solid yet unspectacular display at left back going out his job quietly but effectively. 7/10

7. Matthew Rose: Looked dodgy to the big ball over the top but he had a decent game and if only his defensive partner could have been as alert as him we would have won the game. 7/10

20. Arthur Gnohere: Karl Ready like in his defending. Gave away free kick after free kick and was a disaster throughout the game, 5/10

4. Steve Palmer: Nice cross for the second goal but I didn’t really notice him apart from that. 6/10

8. Marc Bircham: Again he worked his heart out for the team and was magnificent for us in midfield. His closing down, tackling and passing was crucial to us staying in charge of the game for so long. 8/10

11. Gareth Ainsworth: A very quiet game on the right wing. He did better in the second half but I think the last few games may have caught up with him and Holloway was right to take him off. 7/10

10. Kevin Gallen: Led from the front and was superb on the wing and up front creating chances and at the heart of everything we did. 8/10

29. Paul Furlong: What can I say. Simply brilliant. Scored two and deserved more. In these big games Furlong is really producing the goods for us. 9/10

28. Jamie Cureton: Worked hard and caused Barnsley plenty of problems drifting out wide where he is hard to mark. He should have scored one of the chances that came his way though. 8/10

Subs

22. Kevin McLeod: Did well on the left floating in some decent crosses and helping out at the back. 7/10

17. Marcus Bean: Poor Bean will be blamed for the dropped points but it was a stupid decision to bring him on. 6/10

9. Tony Thorpe: Gave them an extra problem to think about which created a bit of panic in defence and allowed us to score. 7/10
