The afternoon started with a wonderfully
observed minutes silence for the late Daphne Biggs. Steve Palmer
and Ian Holloway carried a wreath to the centre circle and the teams
came out with and gathered around in the middle of the pitch to
pay tribute.
The team along with the substitutes stood as one with
arms around each shoulder as all of the Loftus road staff including
box office staff, the LSA and QPR 1st stood on the touchline heads
bowed in a silent tribute. The only noise came from those still
on their way to the ground with shouts of Ur's but that didn't take
away from a special moment.
Plymouth observed it brilliantly and thanks to their
supporters for doing so. Daphne deserved this kind of tribute. It
was an emotional moment and I imagine more than few tears were shared
as we remembered a QPR legend.
As for the game, well we started with two chances
from last Monday's defeat. Jerome Thomas came in for Karl Connolly
and Doudou replaced the injured Richard Langley.
It took Plymouth less than 3 seconds to kick Jerome
Thomas and that set out the pattern for the rest of the game. The
immensely talented winger was kicked all over the pitch but showed
amazing strength and skill to rise above it all and end up embarrassing
the thugs trying to kick him out of the game. We were on top and
playing some good football but Plymouth have an excellent defence
and made it difficult for us to create chances.
Williams and Thomas were linking well on the left
with Thomas free to roam all over the pitch knowing that Williams
is more than good enough to hold hi own on the left. Doudou as well
was having a decent game passing the ball rather than running into
trouble. He had a chance to score after some good football but the
keeper saved his shot.
Plymouth caused problems though when they came forward
on the counter attack. Shittu was having a poor game and was hesitant
in clearing his lines causing confusion between him and Forbes and
palmer at different times. He needed to settle down and just clear
the ball but in Evans, Plymouth had an old fashioned centre forward
who was putting Shittu under pressure and it made for a difficult
afternoon for our defender.
We had chances to take the lead though. Kevin Gallen
headed over from a corner and also hit a brilliant curling shot,
which saw Larrieu produce a superb save. We were having loads of
corners and free kicks and one free kick almost saw us take the
lead when it was taken short to Thomas whose shot was well saved
at the near post.
The set pieces looked more out of Arsenal's training
book than ours as we used intelligence to open them up and it almost
worked. Tommy Williams also took a short corner and played a one
two, which saw the keeper produce another good save after Williams
hit a powerful shot.
As we know with Rangers though we never makes things
easy and Plymouth took the lead against the run of play. Shittu
failed to clear his lines with a week header and the ball fell to
David Friio whose shot went in off the post to send the 2,500 Plymouth
fans go wild at the school end. The loud and passionate support
deserved a goal but it was against the run of play and we were pretty
shell-shocked. It didn't take long for Shittu to get a slating from
some fans with very short memories but we continued to play some
good football and should have got level before half time.
Jerome Thomas again found himself in space but had
no support from midfield and crosses were usually cut out due to
lack of Rangers players attacking the ball. A few more corners before
the end of the half but after two long injuries it was laughable
to see only two minutes of injury time on the board. Some boos greeted
half time but that's usual now at Loftus Road.
Plymouth should have extended their league after the
defence collapsed again. Williams appeared to be fouled in the box
but Royce was forced to save a point blank range before pushing
the ball off Hodges boot as a goal seemed inevitable. The goal did
come though soon after. A corner from the right saw Rangers half
clear before Hodges fired the ball back into the net to give them
a two goal league. It seemed that Plymouth would make it 5 wins
in a row but you had the feeling the game wasn't over yet.
Doudou was linking well with Forbes as we went on
the attack but Doudou was taken off much to the disgust of the young
winger. Bircham and Palmer tried to calm him down but he was clearly
angry at being replaced by Richard Pacquette.
Pacquette went wide but Forbes allowed him to get
in the middle as often as possible with Gallen also coming out wide
when needed. Williams unleashed another great shot from 30 yards,
which saw another magnificent save as the ball was heading for the
top corner. Shittu then had the chance to put us back in the game
but his header was cleared off the line and it looked like one of
those days.
That was until Jerome Thomas exploded into life. Pacquette
laid the ball off to Forbes and made an excellent run into the box.
For the first time Plymouth had an extra man to pick up and the
space began to appear. Jerome played a one two on the edge of the
box and ran onto the ball to curl a brilliant shot into the top
corner. We were back in the game and looking good for the draw.
To Plymouths credit they dug in and defended very
well making t a tough last twenty minutes. Jerome continued to get
some rough treatment, as did Furlong who was taken off with an injury.
Furlong again had a good game but Andy Thomson came
on to replace him and it seemed set up for Thommo to get us a point.
Thomson was quiet though despite working hard up front the chances
were not coming and two Gallen shots were all we had to show for
a lot of good build up play.
Jerome was taken off for Karl Connolly as we went
all out for a goal. The crowd were getting frustrated but I felt
if we got the injury time we deserved for all the time wasting and
injuries then we would get at least one more chance to get a point.
Five minutes were put on the board and Rangers stepped up a gear
with time running out.
Gallen had a half chance to score but the minutes
were ticking away and with Plymouth playing about 8 defenders at
this stage it was going to take something special to get a goal.
Cue Richard Pacquette who turned and hit a brilliant shot into the
top corner from 30 yards out as Loftus Road erupted. Some urged
the team to go and win the game, others prayed for the final whistle
to go sow e didn't cock it all up.
The whistle did go and Rangers got a well earned point.
It should have been three but when you are 2-0 down at home you'll
take anything. This was a good game and Plymouth will be in the
top six based on this performance, they work hard and are very difficult
to beat.
Eight points out of a possible eighteen is not the
start we all wanted but if we keep playing like this and continue
to improve then I think we have a very good chance of promotion
this season.
Man of the Match: Tommy Williams
Players Ratings
15. Simon Royce: One cracking save in the second
half and another good display in goal. He couldn't do much about
the goals. 7/10
2. Terrell Forbes: Helped get us back in the game
by flying forward on the right and allowing Gallen and Pacquette
to stay in the middle. His crossing and passing is getting better
and at the back we have no one better than him. 7/10
33. Tommy Williams: Towards the end of the game he
seemed to have the ball stuck to his foot. His dribbling from deep
causes problems all the time and his crossing is superb. He was
unlucky not to score with two great efforts. 8/10
4. Steve Palmer: Worked his arse off to get the team
going from the back, helped Shittu through a bad first half and
was one of our better players again. 7/10
6. Danny Shittu: He won't need me to tell him he had
a bad game. His reaction at the end said it all. He'll learn from
this though which will make him an even better player. 6/10
7. Matthew Rose: Not as bad as usual but not good
either. 6/10
8. Marc Bircham: A Surprisingly quiet game from Bircham,
played some nice passes around but not as involved as he has been
in other games. 6/10
12. Doudou: Better performance but Doudou passing
the ball to his team mates and attacking the opposition with pace.
He was gutted to be taken off. 6/10
32. Jerome Thomas: Not fully fit but still head and
shoulders above this division. I'd forgotten how skilful this boy
is and he always tries to have an end product on his skill. A joy
to watch just a shame he was kicked all over the pitch. 7/10
10. Kevin Gallen: Another good performance by Gallen
whose hard work deserved a goal 7/10
29. Paul Furlong: Again he was impressive holding
the ball up and being a nuisance to play against. I hope his loan
is extended. 7/10
Subs:
24. Richard Pacquette: Deserved his goal after a very
impressive performance. 7/10
11. Karl Connolly: Fell over and looked knackered
despite only being on for 5 minutes. 6/10
27. Andy Thomson: Pretty quiet game and didn't get
a chance to score. 6/10
