Oldham 0

Queens Park Rangers 0

Rangers had the luxury of picking an unchanged team for the trip to Oldham. Rangers started the game attacking towards the Rangers fans who had travelled in good numbers to see this game.

Oldham came out quickly and almost went ahead within 30 seconds. David Crass got onto a cross and fired over from the edge of the area as the Rangers defence began to look a bit shaky after such a solid display last week.

We soon settled though and had a chance after four minutes. Paul Furlong did well making the chance for himself and his shot was well saved by the keeper. We were looking the better side and had more chances to break the deadlock.

Lee Cook crossed for Langley but his header went wide before a number of corners got us close to a goal. Gallen stood right in front of the keeper and the curling corners caused trouble for them. Shittu and Carlisle got their heads of a few of them but the closest we got was a Bircham shot, which he should have done better with.

Oldham got back into the game with them playing it our from the back and Rangers allowed them to do what they like in their own half but when they got towards our goal Bircham and Palmer were quick in the tackle to win the ball back. They had a few corners and a Paul Murray shot but didn't look like scoring.

When we did put pressure on them in their own half they seemed to panic and we were making them look very ordinary.

Furlong was booked for a kick at an Oldham defender, which seemed pretty harsh. The ball was being shielded out and Furlong tried to play the ball but caught the player who went down like he had been shot. The booking continued as Langley got booked for a high tackle even though again the ball was there to be won.

We ended the half the stronger team though and should have got in front before the break. Gallen had one chance, which was blocked, and Williams ran 50 yards and hit a powerful shot, which was blocked well by the last defender. During injury time we had one chance with a Langley free kick, which was brilliantly saved by the keeper.

At half time though we were looking slightly the better side and hopes were high that we could go on and win the game.

As the second half started we were by far the better side, as Oldham seemed content to play for a point. Forbes and Langley linked well on the right and the cross saw Gallen with his back to goal volley over the bar.

Forbes was getting into space and another cross saw a goalmouth scramble end with Bircham and Gallen both having chances. Cook was beginning to get more of the ball and finding himself in more and more space. Bircham was driving forward from midfield whilst Furlong and Gallen looked a constant threat up front.

We came so close to taking the lad after a very good passing move. It started with Williams and ended with Lee Cook opening up the defence for Gallen whose shot was well saved by the keeper. I thought Gallen should have done better but it was a very good save to deny him.

We kept the pressure on and you could feel the confidence growing. A long kick by Day saw Gallen beat the offside trap and was clean through one on one with the keeper. It looked a certain goal but he powered his shot over the bar when he should have done much better.

We were well on top and Cook was causing problems for them cutting inside. Furlong did well on the right and saw his fierce shot well saved again before Cook saw a good chance blocked by a defender.

It was like a home game for us as we went forward and looked in no danger at the back. It was hard to believe Oldham were so high in the table and a goal seemed inevitable. But Oldham did show why they are so high in the league by keeping us out due mostly to a match winning performance by Leslie Pogliacomi in goal whose saves kept them in the game.

Oldham were making changes and threw on some more forwards which promoted Ian Holloway to make a change. Lee Cook was taken off as he was showing signs of tiredness and Gino Padula came on with Tommy Williams pushing further forward.

Oldham had a few good breaks but Danny Shittu was in fine form and if they got beyond him Terrell Forbes was at his best with one excellent tackle as they broke through. With time running out we had more chances with Gallen again the one getting the opportunities. A Langley cross found our top scorer but his shot went over the bar.

A draw seemed likely now before Oldham had a great chance to win it. Carlisle was caught out and Andrews running clear but he pulled his shot wide.

Oldham began to get on top for the first time in the game and a few corners and long throw ins gave us reason to panic for the first time all afternoon. Holloway brought on Brett Angell for Williams to add some height to clear these set pieces but he was only on for a few seconds before the ref blew for full time.

So a well earned point but it should have been more. We were the better side and on another day we would have taken our chances and finished them off.

Man of the Match: Tommy Williams

Players Ratings

1. Chris Day: Didn't have much to do but dealt with corners well and organised his defence with the confidence we've been missing since Royce went back to Leicester. 8/10

2. Terrell Forbes: Another excellent performance. His defending was superb, as he let nothing get past him all game and made one excellent tackle in the second half as the defence was split open. 8/10

33. Tommy Williams: Solid at the back working hard to win the ball back and keeping things very tight. His skill in tight spots was superb as he dribbled his way out of trouble. He looks back to his best since his return from injury and it's great to see him playing like this again. 8/10

5. Clarke Carlisle: Did well during the game but made a few errors towards the end as he began to tire. His partnership with Shittu is beginning to look quite impressive. 7/10

6. Danny Shittu: A monster for us at the back as he cleared everything without any nonsense. He also gets forward and is always a threat at set pieces. Another good performance from Shittu. 8/10

15. Lee Cook: Caused problems with his close control and running at players but his final ball was a disappointment. 7/10

8. Marc Bircham: Worked hard as ever in midfield and made sure they had no time on the ball. His passing is not great but he made sure we won the ball back which is why he is in the team. 7/10

4. Steve Palmer: Did well in his midfield role. I still don't think he is the best option in midfield but he was impressive again in this game. 7/10

9. Richard Langley: Showed moments of skill which could have won us the game but still doesn't look back to his best. 6/10

10. Kevin Gallen: Should have scored one of his chances that came his way but his all round game was strong again. He worked hard and ended up in midfield trying to win the ball for the team. 7/10

29.Paul Furlong: Close second for man of the match. He was excellent again up front and was unlucky not to score. 8/10
