| Notts County away was a game I've
been looking forward to for a while. Last away game before Christmas
I looked at this as game to get to early have a few drinks and make
a day of it.
We got to Nottingham at about half
twelve and after a promise made in America last year, Carly allowed
me to have a few drinks in Hooters.
A great start to the day and nothing
could spoil a day, which started by being served Stella from a young
girl wearing orange hot pants with her rather large breasts hanging
out of her Hooters top. What on earth could spoil this day.well
yes here comes Queens Park Rangers ready to destroy any fun you
may have been having.
Arriving at the ground it was almost
impossible to get a beer and it was freezing cold as we took our
seats with the teams coming onto the field. Rangers had made a few
chances to the team all of which were forced.
Tommy Williams and Danny Shittu were
both injured whilst Calum Wilock and Simon Royce had returned to
their clubs after loan spells with Rangers.
We started with Culkin in goal, a
back four of Danny Murphy, Forbes, Carlisle and Palmer. In midfield
Dennis Oli was on the right, Rose and Bircham in the middle and
quite unbelievable Richard Langley as a left winger. Yes you read
that right, Langley on the left wing. Gallen and Angell started
up front and from the shape of the team you just knew we'd get beat.
Langley spent the entire first half
trying to get the ball on his right foot whilst drifting into central
midfield leaving Danny Murphy isolated. This saw Palmer and Carlisle
come across to help him out leaving Forbes up against a left winger,
centre forward palmer had left unmarked and any runners from midfield
that Rose and Bircham failed to track.
It was hopeless stuff and the only
surprise was it took Notts Couny a few minutes to score. They were
all over us, and a ball over to the right saw Culkin flap at it
and Liburd volleyed into the net with no one around to close him
down. 1-0 and it was about to get much worse.
Danny Murphy fouled a County player
out on the left and as the players stood like musical statues the
cross came in and Fenton headed in past Culkin for another easy
goal, which should have been prevented. A real hiding looked on
the cards and it was so self inflicted by playing Langley out wide
and still continuing with Rose in midfield.
We came back into the game with a
few good crosses by Oli. One of which saw Angell get a chance but
his header was brilliantly saved. Carlisle went close from a corner
but despite a good spell of corners we failed to beat the man at
the front post time and time again to leave us even more frustrated.
Some fans booed the team off at half
time, hard to argue with that really, we were truly awful and Ian
Holloway was doing himself no favours with the tactics he had used
for this one. I couldn't see us getting back in the game, as it
seemed unlikely that we'd switch to 3 at the back and bring on Wes
Daly to bolster the midfield.
We started the second half with the
same team and tactics and you won't be surprised to read not much
changed. Long balls up to Gallen didn't work and despite one shot
by Gallen where he could have done better chances were few and far
between and the cold wind was making an early exit look a very good
idea.
Another man looking to get out of
the ground was Culkin. His kicking was awful and twice he almost
gave away goals once hitting against Caskey and he was lucky to
see the ball sail just wide. Another kick went straight to Allsopp
but Culkin did well to make a save at his feet.
Culkin is so short of confidence
it is unbelievable, god knows why as he hasn't played for ages and
this was his chance to make the number one shirt his own. Chris
Day should be back in the team by next week on this evidence.
Dennis Oli hit one good shot, which
was saved, but it was his last contribution as he was taken off
along with Brett Angell. On came Furlong and Wes Daly to almost
silence from the Rangers fans who were to cold and bored to get
excited or angry at this stage.
It took us ten minutes to give Daly
the ball but when we did he put in several quality crosses and he
looked a very promising player. One cross was superb and found Furlong
five yards out with a free header. His pathetic attempt, which flew
wide, summed us up and that was the last chance for us to get back
in the game.
Daly hit a superb shot from 30 yards
which produced a very good save but as we looked to throw everything
forward (an hour to late at this stage) Carlisle was half asleep
to give the ball away allowing Danny Alsopp to run through and score
the third. At the end the team went of to a mixture of boos, silence
and Fuck Off Holloway shouts.
As for me I clapped a few of the
players off but they hardly deserved it. Back to Hooters with many
other Rangers fans after the game but all the alcohol in the world
couldn't stop the pain of seeing Rangers heading down to table towards
division three if we keep playing like this.
Man of the Match: Wes Daly
Players Ratings
13. Nick Culkin: Made a couple of
good saved but flapped at crosses and his kicking was awful. Anyone
would think Tony Roberts was the goalkeeping coach……oh yeah he is.
5/10
2. Terrell Forbes: Spent most of the
game covering for other people's mistakes, which meant his own role
in the team suffered. His passing was awful though just hoofing
the ball again instead of looking for a simple pass. 6/10
16. Danny Murphy: Struggled with
Langley in front of him as Richard isn't a left winger. This meant
Murphy was two against one a lot of the time but I thought he did
ok. 6/10
4. Steve Palmer: Spent the game hoofing
the ball forward bit made a few good tackles to keep the score down.
5/10
5. Clarke Carlisle: God knows what's
happened to his confidence. He looks very low at the moment and
a shadow of the player he can be. 5/10
7. Matthew Rose: Ran all over the
place but didn't actually do much. 6/10
8. Marc Bircham: Same as Rose 6/10
9. Richard Langley: Spent most of
the game trying to work out what position he is playing and was
very disappointing. 5/10
20. Dennis Oli: Needs time in the
reserves to improve his game, he didn't do much apart from a few
crosses and one shot. 5/10
10. Kevin Gallen: Ran his heart out
but a ball to his feet might see us get the best out of him again.
7/10
34. Brett Angell: Not very impressed
by him. He looks like the big, slow forward most of thought we had
signed. Unlucky with one header though. 5/10
Subs:
29. Paul Furlong: Missed a sitter
and didn't do much else. 5/10
21. Wes Daly: Looked like the best
Rangers player on the pitch when he came on. Three superb crosses
and one shot, he used the ball well and moved off the ball as well.
Something a few of our more senior players could do with copying.
8/10
27. Andy Thomson: Ran around a lot
but it was a loss cause by the time he came on. 6/10
