It was all set
up for a real grudge match as Rangers took on Luton at Loftus Road.
This fixture has always had something about
it and this match was made a little more special after the meeting
earlier in the season.
That day Luton had two sent off and Joe Kinnear
accused Ian Holloway of getting his players to con the referee.
Since then Kinnear has not wasted an opportunity
bad mouth QPR and he seemed convinced his side were going to push
us out of the playoffs.
After last weeks draw with Tranmere the playoff
dream was almost dead for Luton but he still mentioned how he was
desperate to beat QPR. So Kinnear had added some spice to the game
and Rangers looked desperate to shove Kinnear's words down his throats.
We were unchanged from the team that beat
Cardiff but Tommy Williams made a welcome return on the bench. Rangers
started the better side and created chances to give us an early
lead.
Langley did well on the right to set up Gallen
but the Rangers forward was tackled as he went to shoot. Clarke
Carlisle went close from a corner as he headed over the bar and
in space Langley hit a shot just wide.
Our best chance came after about 15 minutes.
Gallen outpaced the defence and seemed certain to score as he poked
the ball past the keeper but it rolled just past the far post as
the Rangers fans began to celebrate.
Luton came back in for a while but didn't
create much and Rangers were by far the better side. Adrian Forbes
had Luton's best chance as Chris Day pulled off an excellent save
but that just seemed to inspire Rangers to step up a gear and leave
Luton behind.
Rangers cut Luton apart with a quality passing
move, Bircham and Langley exchanged passes before spreading it wide
to kelly whose cross found Langley diving in with a header but the
Luton keeper made a good save.
We soon got in front though with a corner
on the left. Langley swung it in and Kevin McCleod found himself
unmarked and headed in from six yards out. It was a goal Rangers
fully deserved and Luton had no answer to us.
We stayed in control until half time and
looked set for a third win in a row. The news that Tranmere were
drawing was good for us as we looked to cement that sixth place.
The second half was all one way traffic.
Langley had a couple of long distance shots whilst Gallen went close
from a Mcleod cross. Luton were looking a very poor side and its
hard to understand how they have done so well this season on this
performance.
They had one chance from a corner but Rangers
were comfortable and didn't have to play that well to win the game.
Palmer and Bircham were outstanding in midfield
winning the ball and using it well with Langley and McCleod creating
chances a second goal seemed inevitable. Langley went close with
a free kick which was saved by the keeper before the killer goal
came.
Another foul just outside the area saw McCleod
stand over the free kick and curl it brilliantly into the bottom
corner to seal the victory.
Rangers fans celebrated singing "Your so
Shit it's unbelievable" and Joe Kinnear had been made to look a
little silly for his comments about QPR.
Tranmere's late winner was a disappointment
but as long as we keep winning then it doesn't matter what Tranmere
do.
