The first ever LDV game at Loftus Road turned out to be a hugely
disappointing night for those who made the effort to support the
team.
Ian Holloway made several changes to the team as he looked to give
several young players a chance in the first team. Out went Clarke
Carlisle, Danny Shittu, Jerome Thomas and Kevin Gallen. This gave
chances to Wes Daly in midfield along with Dennis Oli on the wing
and Karl Connolly partnered Andy Thomson up front.
Matthew Rose started the game in defence a position many feel he
is far more at home with. The biggest surprise was to see Oliver
Burgess back in the first team for the first time in a competitive
match since last November.
The game turned out to be a very dull affair with neither team looking
too bothered about the game and the watching fans did their best
to stay awake.
Andy Thomson had a couple of chances to give us the lead and had
the ball in the back of the net after a good pass by Langley but
his goal was ruled out for offside.
Langley also had a good effort saved but the excitement was few
and far between. Not many of the young players did their chances
much good of a regular first team place but Matthew Rose looked
far more comfortable in defence.
We resorted to the long ball to often though and a 0-0 looked a
certainty.
Holloway made a few changes during the second half. Doudou came
on for Dennis Oli who suffered a slight injury in the first half.
Doudou looked lively but didn't get much of the ball to his feet
and ended up pretty ineffective.
Oliver Burgess will be pleased to play 75 minutes for the team and
he lacked match practice which is what you'd expect. Gino Padula
came on for him to make his home debut for Rangers.
Simon Royce was Rangers best player yet again and kept us in it
with a few good saves but neither team realistically looked like
scoring.
After 90 minutes it was all square and heading for golden goal.
Wes Daly came off to be replaced by Marcus Bean who worked hard
in central midfield.
The game then turned into a disaster when Richard Langley lost his
temper and elbowed a Bristol City player. Langley was given the
red card and will now miss three important games next month. Richard
is a very talented player but he has to learn to keep his cool as
he knows that opposition teams will wind him up.
After that sending off we hung on for penalties to offer a glimpse
of entertainment for the highest ever crowd in a first round LDV
game.
So the game went to penalties. Andy Thomson was first up for Rangers
but he hit the post to give Bristol City the advantage which they
took as they went 1-0 up. Rangers hit back though with Doudou and
Steve Palmer scoring before Danny Coles missed to get us back level.
Tom Williams and Karl Connolly both scored to take it into sudden
death before Matthew Rose stepped up. Despite having a good game
he blasted the penalty over the bar and it was left to Liam Rosenior
son of former QPR striker Leroy Rosenior to win the tie for Bristol
City.
So Rangers crash out of a cup competition in the first round again
meaning Ian Holloway has yet to win a cup game as manager. It's
a pathetic record but at least we lost to a team in our own division
this time.
All eyes now turn to the big game at the weekend against Oldham
but a red card for Richard Langley last night could prove to be
very costly for us in the next few weeks,
