Rangers continued their pre-season campaign
with a 5-0 win at Kingstonian on Monday night.
Goals from Andy Thomson (2), Doudou, Kevin Gallen and trialist Mamady
Sidibe earned the Rs victory with a much-improved performance from
the game at Aylesbury on Saturday.
It was a better display from the Rs who included Marc Bircham, Gino
Padula, Nick Culkin and Gallen along with youngsters Wes Daly and
Marcus Bean in the starting line-up.
The Rs were playing in a new formation with a back three, four in
midfielder with Doudou in the hole behind the front two.
Doudou seemed to be revelling in the role and he opened the scoring
with a powerful header on 16 minutes, pulling short to head home Gino
Padula's corner.
The Rs increased the lead five minutes later when Dan Shittu picked
up a loose corner, skipped past a defender in the box and pulled back
for Gallen for drive home.
Holloway made two changes at the break. He was forced to replace Padula
who had limped off with a calf injury at half time after going down
under a heavy challenge in the closing minutes. Clarke Carlisle replaced
Shittu.
It wasn't until Holloway made three further changes that the Rs increased
the lead. Andy Thomson, Sidibe and trialist Sadio Sow, a French left
winger who was with Preston North End last season, came on for Doudou,
Karl Connolly and Kevin Gallen.
The third came on 73 minutes when Marcus Bean played a clever ball
in the box, Sidibe stepped over the ball and Thomson was free to place
the ball past the keeper. Thomson got his second of the night from
the penalty spot five minutes later when Bircham was fouled as he
burst into the box.
Sibide completed the scoring when he volleyed in from close range
when Thomson's crossed from the byline after collecting a clever reverse
pass from Bircham.
"It was a much better performance," admitted Holloway after the match."I
wanted to try something different tonight because we need to get the
balance right in the side, but overall I am pleased with the display.
"We will have to be able to adapt and change the formation over the
course of the season and that is what we have been working on.
"I sat down with Kenny Jackett after the Aylesbury game and we did
a lot of thinking. It's no secret that I have been looking for a big
and powerful centre forward who can play off Gallen or Thomson. I've
been looking for something we haven't got. If I can't find one, then
we will have to work on different systems.
"Sometimes you can spend too long looking for something that you haven't
got, when you should be concentrating on what you have and working
with those players."
The Rs players seemed confortable with the new formation. "I think
Doudou enjoyed the new role and Karl Connolly has said to me that
he wants to play up front this season," explained the Rangers boss.
Team: Culkin, Forbes (Duncan), Padula (Murphy), Palmer (Ifura), Shittu
