Facing a Cheltenham side right
in the middle of a relegation battle should be an easy task for
a team facing promotion. But for most Rangers fans this game was
always going to be as difficult as an away game at Oldham.
Rangers have a habit of getting
a good away result and then tripping up over a team we should really
beat so this was a game, which could decide where we finish this
season.
Rangers were unchanged and Ian
Holloway made the bold move to put four forwards on the bench in
Leroy Griffiths, Andy Thomson, Richard Pacquette and Brett Angell.
It seemed to signal the intent that we were going all out for a
win and possibly trying to boost the goal difference as well.
That seemed likely for the first
few minutes as we started the game well on top. Langley did well
on the right to give Gallen a half chance, which he turned and shot
straight at the keeper.
We looked comfortable enough
until they got a free kick just inside our half. Two Cheltenham
players went to the back post and Rangers did nothing about as the
ball was launched to them and they easily won the header to place
across goal for Duff to put them ahead. That's the last time I sign
him in Championship Manager.
We were all in a state of shock
at this, well not really we all knew we'd make hard work of this
game but we had plenty of time to turn it around. We began to waste
possession and the players took a few minutes to settle and Cheltenham
got a few corners and looked worryingly like get a second.
But never fear Lee Cook is here
and he turned on an excellent performance to get us back on the
game. His running at players caused them problems all night and
he combined well with Gallen and Bircham to push us further forward
and gain a bit of momentum.
That was lost though when Tommy
Williams collapsed to the floor with what looked like a bad ankle
injury but it was hard to tell. Williams was stretched off and that
is a worrying sight considering this was to be Lee Cook's last game
for us. Gino Padula came on to a huge ovation but for all our possession
when he came on we didn't really create much.
Langley and Forbes looked a
threat on the right but Gallen and Furlong both missed chances to
get us level and a number of good corners saw Cheltenham defend
as if their lives depended on it and they kept us out.
With half time approaching the
fans remained patient, as did the players and you could feel the
belief that that would get a goal to put our fears at ease. The
goal came after superb work by Cook. His cut inside and dribbled
past four players bursting into the box to cut the ball back for
Gallen who turned his shot into the bottom corner of the net to
put us level.
Gallen went mad but his team
mates mobbed Lee Cook who we had to thank for this goal.
Gallen was urging the team forward
with quick goal kicks and the team went all out for a second before
half time.
Langley then picked up the ball
in midfield and just as it looked like he would spread the play
wide he stepped over the ball and left a defender for dead before
splitting them open with a wonderful through ball. Gallen ran onto
it but before he could get a touch Duff fired an unstoppable shot
into the back of the net to put us in front.
It was great work by Langley
and moments like this are why he is so important to us. And Duff
is now forgiven and back in my Championship Manager team.
The final action of the half
saw a long ball aimed at Shittu and the big defender went for a
volley but missed the ball completely and almost knocked himself
out as his leg seemed within millimetres of connecting with his
head. Very funny moment but he got up and tried to act as if nothing
had happened.
We knew a third goal was needed
and we started the second half in blistering form. Cook was tearing
them apart on the left whilst Palmer and Bircham were working hard
and winning the midfield battle.
A third goal was only minutes
away and when it came the goal was pure quality. Langley again was
the provider showing a change of pace which left the full back for
dead as he cut into the box and crossed for Cook to finish it off
and win the game for Rangers.
Cook threw off his shirt and
was mobbed by the Rangers fans and players as his farewell game
was going like a dream. Flashbacks of Mark Kennedy's last game for
Rangers went through my head, Cook was as impressive as Kennedy
had been a few years ago.
We were looking for more goals
and Cook again left his defender for dead and his low cross was
almost turned in by Gallen. We were cruising at this stage and a
fourth goal was not far away.
Another Langley pass found Furlong
at the edge of the box and he used his strength to turn his man
and power a brilliant shot into the back of the net. I had to rub
my eyes to see if Les Ferdinand himself had just returned to score
one of his famous goals he used to get for us with strength, pace
and power but it was indeed Paul Furlong.
It was a deserved goal for
Furlong who had again been outstanding up front and anyone caring
about who he used to play for now really belongs in a mental hospital.
The goals ended at four though
and we took our foot off the pedal for the last half an hour. Furlong
and Gallen went off to give Andy Thomson and Brett Angell a chance
and that at least gave the fans some fun with cried of Angell, Angell
give us a goal.
I began to think that if he
couldn't score in his game he never would and in the 15 minutes
he was on the pitch he never once looked like breaking his duck.
Thomson looked sharp though and was involved in some good passing
moves with Langley but we didn't get many more chances to add to
our lead.
Lee Cook was given a standing
ovation as he came over to take a corner and his name was sung around
the ground.
So a 4-1 win and a standing
ovation for the team and especially Lee Cook as he said goodbye
to the Rangers fans.
Results elsewhere were alright
for us as we open up a four point gap over Tranmere but second place
is probably a bit out of our reach unless we win the next two games.
Man of the Match: Lee Cook
Players Ratings
1. Chris Day: His first goal
conceded since his return to the first team but he recovered well
and had another solid game. 7/10
2. Terrell Forbes: His defending
is second to none and he was his usual brilliant self in defence.
Going forward he linked well with Langley and got a couple of decent
crosses. 8/10
33. Tommy Williams: Looked good
before he got injured. Lets hope it's not to serious. 7/10
5. Clarke Carlisle: As in most
games he had a shaky spell where he was nowhere near his best but
for the majority of the game he was good. Seems to have regained
a bit of pace after winning a straight race for the ball for the
first time in a while. 7/10
6. Danny Shittu: Lost out in
the air a bit to often in the opening twenty minutes but he sorted
himself out and was solid again after that. 7/10
15. Lee Cook: A superb performance
his best yet for Rangers and a real shame he is going back. Scored
one, made one and was a threat all night. 9/10
8. Marc Bircham: Another good
performance as he worked hard and began to control the midfield
in the second half. He gave the ball away a bit to often in the
first half but he got better as the game wore on. 7/10
4. Steve Palmer: Had a mad
half an hour where he won tackles, played some superb passes and
was excellent. I still don't feel comfortable with him in midfield
but full credit to him for his recent performances. 7/10
9. Richard Langley: His best
game for some time as he showed the skill that he has and had a
hand in three of the four goals. 8/10
10. Kevin Gallen: Took his chance
well and was excellent up front creating chances and his hold up
play is superb. 8/10
29. Paul Furlong: Like Gallen
his hold up play is superb, he has so much strength and he is almost
impossible to get the ball off. A great goal as well to round off
another quality performance. 8/10
Subs
3. Gino Padula: Played well
when he came on and looks set to stay in the team from now on if
he stays fit. 7/10
27. Andy Thomson: Looked very sharp
and he'll be a key player over the next few weeks. 7/10
31. Brett Angell: Will he ever
score for Rangers. He didn't do much but the game was over by the
time he came on. 6/10
