Ian Holloway was forced into
several changes for the trip to Chesterfield. With Lee Cook suspended
changes needed to be made but injuries piled up this week and Clarke
Carlisle and Richard Langley both missed out.
Marc Bircham started though
after a bout of flu whilst Gino Padula returned at left back. Palmer
moved back into defence to allow Oliver Burgess to start a game
for the first time since we faced Vauxhall Motors. Ben Walshe started
his first game in almost 2 years on the left after some impressive
displays in the reserves.
The game started quite evenly
with both sides creating very little until the ten minute mark.
Ben Walshe lost possession on the left allowing Chris Brandon to
cross for Glynn Hurst to head past Nick Culkin and give the home
side the lead.
Disaster for Rangers after results
going for us yesterday and we'd need to show some real fighting
spirit to get back into this game.
We did show the spirit needed
though and soon got level. Richard Pacquette struck the goal on
13 minutes with a powerful shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Those Rangers fans who had made the journey were rewarded for their
superb loyalty and Pacquette made it 3 goals in 4 games for the
youngster.
The goal settled Rangers down
and we began to look the better side. Bircham and Gallen were involved
in Rangers best moves and a number of throw ins eventually earned
us a corner. Marc Bircham swung it in and Danny Shittu met the ball
at the far post to power a header into the back of the net and give
Rangers the lead. Shittu's goal was reminiscent of his header at
the same ground last season which spookily enough gave Rangers a
2-1 lead that afternoon. Was history about to repeat itself?
The rest of the half was a pretty
even affair. Rangers were pretty much in control but neither side
looked like scoring again. Brett Angell had Rangers best chance
with a header from another Bircham corner. The big forward headed
over to continue one of the worst goal draughts in his career.
A few corners towards the end
of the half had the Ranges fans worried but we held on to go in
at half time 2-1 up. At half time Ian Holloway made one change.
Ben Walshe came off and Andy Thomson came on to the unfamiliar lef
twing position. With Thomson on the wing many fans can be excused
for wondering what the hell is happening with two of our best forwards
playing as wingers but the move worked reasonably well with us keeping
Chesterfield quiet and having a few chances ourselves.
Pacquette was our main danger
man up front and we earned several corners which Marc Bircham delivered
into the box. Bircham picked up a booking though midway through
the second half after a scuffle broke out and Bircham was accused
of elbowing.
Rangers continued to work hard
but almost threw the game away when Culkin stayed on his line and
Chesterfield had an open goal to level the scores but managed to
fluff the chance much to the relief of Nick Culkin.
Pacquette had more chances for
Rangers, a strong run and shot was well saved and his lob was also
close but not close enough to kill the game off. Brett Angell also
had a great chance to get us a third but his header went over the
bar when he should have done better.
Marcus Bean then came on for
the tiring Oliver Burgess before Paul Furling returned up front
in place of Brett Angell. Furlong has been subject of some terrible
treatment by the Rangers fans but he is still a decent player and
a far better option up front than Brett Angell.
We almost got the killer third
goal when a header by Richard Pacquette was tipped round post by
Ben Williams. Furlong met the corner with a header but it went over
the bar. Chesterfield began to pile the pressure on with a few corners
but we broke away and got that third goal we had been desperate
for.
Paul Furlong got the goal, his
first for Rangers since September as he drilled a left footed shot
into the bottom corner of the net. Jubilant celebrations followed
as Rangers fans knew the three points were in the bag.
It was cruise control now and
we soon got a fourth goal. Andy Thomson fired home a right footed
shot into the net to get his first goal since last November. 4-1
away from home and with so many players out of position it was a
superb result.
Chesterfield grabbed a late
consolation when Brandon scored from inside the box after Culkin
had made a good save to deny Reeves.
So a third away win on the trot
and Rangers go within three points of 5th place and move further
away from the chasing pack.
