When the fixtures were released
last summer one of the first games to look out for was Blackpool away.
A weekend away at Blackpool is always a good laugh and luckily this
season we were due to visit the seasiders at the end of March.
Cue hotels being booked by many Rangers fans as the importance of
the game and a chance for a weekend of cheap drinking was to good
an offer to refuse.
We arrived up in Blackpool on Friday afternoon to be greeted by a
very cheap and cheesy B&B we had booked. A trip into town saw many
other QPR shirts, mostly on kids playing in the arcades and looking
disappointed at the Pleasure Beach not opening until Saturday. We
had a choice between going along the pier to a look at the seaside
or doing a pub crawl. Thankfully my girlfriend Carly picked the pub
crawl route.
A few hours later we headed to Brannagans where it was buy one get
one free on all drinks. On one trip to the bar I began to recognise
a few faces from QPR games before a chant of Ur'ss rang around the
pub. It didn't take long to work out the entire pub was virtually
all QPR fans as most the LSA arrived and we knew we were in for a
good night.
At about 9 a live band appeared on stage called Hooper. They just
about got through one song before Rangers fans got on the stage grabbed
the microphone and began telling everyone that we were QPR and that
we love Rangers. The poor band had no hope as they tried to play along
but just got drowned out by Rangers fans. It was all in good spirits
though and after leaving at about 1am I couldn't wait for the game
to start.
Saturday morning was spent walking in town and spotting the huge number
of QPR shirts around. It was like a home game but Rangers fans were
smiling and laughing and the pubs beginning to fill up early. Onto
the important stuff though and a thoroughly entertaining game.
It was a short walk from the Ardwick pub to the ground and it looked
very impressive with two shiny new stands. Sadly though the steward
told us we were at the other end which was a wooden stand which looked
like it would fall apart any minute. It was a bizarre sight to see
such a modern two stands and then two cow sheds at the other half
of the ground.
Our end was a complete dump and the view to the pitch was blocked
by a huge pole and the toilets looking like something out of the dark
ages. For some reason on rather drunk Rangers fans went into the Ladies
and accused my girlfriend of being a Blackpool fan. Not sure why,
as surely a Blackpool fan would be in the nice comfortable looking
stand and not arguing with a bloke in the ladies toilets. Still drink
does strange things to people and the number of kiss me quick hats
and Sadamm Hussain masks in the away end showed that this was not
the most sober crowd to watch QPR play this season.
The teams came out to a huge roar and it was time to get the binoculars
out as the pitch was bloody miles away from where we were sitting.
Rangers made one change to the team that lost last weekend. Terrell
Forbes was out injured so Stephen Kelly made his Rangers debut after
signing on loan from Spurs.
We began the game by attacking towards the Blackpool but most of the
action was up at our end. Blackpool played some good football and
were on top for the early part of the game.
They passed the ball as well as any team I have seen this season and
Rangers looked very nervous. At the back we defended well and Kelly
looks a good signing but we lacked any shape in midfield and it looked
like we would struggle.
We did have a few half chances going forward though with good work
out wide causing problems but we didn't worry them enough during the
early stages. The Rangers fans had begun to get a little bit quieter
than at the start of the game but we soon burst into life with a wonderful
moment midway through the half.
A free kick about 25 yards out saw Langley take control of the ball
and I really fancied him to score. He looked confident as he placed
the ball down before curling a superb shot into the top corner of
the net.
The keeper didn't even move as the Rangers fans were mental and Langley
top off his shirt and ran to Ian Holloway where the team celebrated
together. It was a fantastic celebration and Langley needed that goal
after a poor game last week.
We were now on top and you could feel the confidence coming into the
team. A Gino Padula corner was swung in and by the looks of it Danny
Shittu won the header and powered it past the keeper. We went mad
again and were celebrating for so long we didn't notice the ref disallow
the goal.
God Knows what he saw wrong with it, even from our end we couldn't
see much wrong and the Blackpool players hadn't claimed for anything.
I began to worry that it would be a turning point in the game but
we got to half time 1-0 up and the crowd was buzzing.
Second half saw us start a lot better and we were well on top. After
a few minutes a corner on the right brought about the craziest goalmouth
scramble I have ever seen. First off Carlisle hit a shot which was
blocked on the line then Shittu, Gallen and Bircham all seemed to
have efforts blocked with one coming back off the line.
Almost every player was involved swinging for the ball and eventually
the ref blew his whistle as it began to get out of hand. You had to
see it to understand what an amazing sight it was but I'm not sure
why Carlisle and a Blackpool defender was booked. Gino Padula deserves
credit here for dragging Bircham away from a fight which would have
got him sent off.
When play resumed we got going again and were dominating midfield.
Furlong and Gallen were holding the ball up and a second goal was
desperately needed to kill the game off. Blackpool still had chances
to get back in the game but we managed to get that vital second goal.
Furlong was being fouled outside the box and as the linesmen flagged
as if his life depended on it the ref played the advantage as the
ball was played wide to Langley and our very won Golden Balls fired
low and hard into the bottom corner to virtually kill the game off.
The celebrations will live long in the memory as the fans and players
went mad and we knew we were very close to a vital three points. At
this stage we began to sit back and thats never a good thing to do
when your QPR. They created a few good chances but thankfully they
had nothing up front and Day was never really called on to make a
save. A few times we had Kelly to thank though who made some excellent
interceptions and one great last ditch tackle.
Holloway then made a change taking off Paul Furlong who got a standing
ovation from the Rangers fans and bringing on the fit again Matthew
Rose. We went to a 4-5-1 formation and it worked quite well as we
managed to play out the game without giving them many more chances.
A third goal would have been the icing on a very nice tasting cake
and it came with a few minutes left. McCleod put in a brilliant cross
and there was Richard Langley to head home his first ever hat trick
for the club. Jubilant scenes followed and Blackpool must really hate
the sight of Langley. Last season he scored the goal of the season
against them, this season he scored a superb goal in the 2-1 win at
home and now he was here getting a hat trick. Langley must wish he
can play them every week.
An announcement was made on the tannoy that all QPR coaches were waiting
for us in the car park which got 2,000 Rangers fans singing "We're
not going home" as the party was in full swing. I don't think I've
been to an away game with a better atmosphere than this for years.
It was superb stuff and even an injury time goal from Blackpool brought
cheers from the Rangers fans.
So at the end the players came over to celebrate with the fans and
it was nice to see Blackpool fans clapping and chatting with Danny
Shittu after the game who was on loan at Blackpool a few years ago.
So three more points and the only downside was watching a very boring
England game afterwards. Still Rangers fans made the day even more
special with plenty of singing and drinking in the town for the rest
of the night.
A weekend in Blackpool was everything we had hoped for and more and
plans are already being made for next seasons trip although we'll
hopefully be playing in division one then.
