Rangers travelled to Bristol City
knowing this was our toughest test of the season so far. Bristol
City had won every home league game and had yet to concede at goal
at home.
Our away form was hardly brilliant
but the 4-0 win at Mansfield had given us some confidence and the
midweek win against Huddersfield had us believing anything was possible.
Rangers started the game unchanged
from the midweek win but Marc Bircham returned to the bench in place
of Richard Pacquette.
We started off quickly as Bristol
City lost possession straight form the kick off.Connolly combined
well with Gallen who did well to put in a brilliant cross for the
unmarked Matthew Rose but his shot was woeful and went wide. He
really should have scored, the only excuse I can think of is that
he didn't realise how much time and space he had.
After that we played some good football
using Gallen to link the play with midfield and Dennis Oli was a
threat with his pace. Karl Connolly was looking good and Williams
and Forbes were both getting forward into good positions. Connolly
went close with a header, which flashed over the bar, and Dennis
Oli also went close with a header after good work out wide by Rose.
We needed a goal but it didn't come
and Bristol City came back into it. The first half became a joy
to watch as both sides attacked with all they had. Scott Murray
was given far to much space on the right and they went close from
a corner, which was cleared before Murray got the better of Williams
only for Royce to save the day.
Williams needed help dealing with
Murray but didn't get it and we were soon a goal behind. A long
ball over the top saw Palmer beaten and Williams tried to head back
to Royce but it was to weak and Murray chipped the keeper from an
acute angle to give the home side the lead.
The tannoy announcer was very annoying
screaming goal and shouting the goalscorers name in the style of
a Brazilian commentator, a bit like at Orient. Bristol City began
to take control and almost scored again with an identical move.
Williams and Palmer were again caught out as Murray chipped Royce
again but his the bar and the rebound was somehow missed by the
on rushing forward who shot wide from three yards out with an open
goal to aim for. Royce and Gallen both had a right go at Williams
for poor defending again by the man playing at left wing back.
Williams was looking very dodgy but
needed help from Palmer. When we play 3 at the back the wing backs
need to push forward rather than play 5 at the back as we did under
Gerry Francis. At times Williams was playing as a left back marking
two players looking for Connolly or Palmer to come across and help
him but all to often the help never came and Williams was made to
look stupid. He didn't help his case though by that shocking piece
of defending for the first goal.
City had more chances with a few shots
flashing wide before an injury to a City forward saw him taken off
which was good news for us. I think it was Matthews who went off
but whoever it was they had been a big danger to us in the first
20 minutes. Rangers re grouped and began to work hard to get back
in the game and that hard work was rewarded on 23 minutes.
Steve Palmer launched a free kick
into the box and Rose played the ball into the box for Karl Connolly
in space who volleyed past the keeper to get us back in the game.
It was a deserved goal for Connolly who had looked a threat for
us early in the game. Both sides then had chances to go in at half
time in front.
Murray was having a cracking game
for Bristol City and set up another great chance for his team but
again woeful finishing saw us survive. We were also creating chances
at the other end but nothing clear cut and at half time a draw as
a fair result.
As the second half started we made
one change. Marc Bircham came on for Dennis Oli to add more bite
into midfield and Karl Connolly went up front. Bircham impact was
quick as he got stuck into to Bristol City and didn't allow them
time on the ball. They had seen Langley as the danger man putting
3 men on him at times at with Bircham winning the ball we were on
for quick counter attacks and we were soon in front.
Williams won the ball and stormed
down the left wing as he had done last Tuesday night for his goal.
He looked up and found Karl Connolly with an excellent pass and
Connolly took one touch to take it past the defender and then placed
his shot past the keeper for a cool finish. Williams went mad and
was mobbed by the Rangers players, he was having a torrid time at
the back but his run and pass had helped give us the lead and Gallen
was quick to praise him after giving him some abuse in the first
half.
The Rangers fans were now celebrating
and we were well on top. A corner on the right was wasted by Langley
but we were passing the ball well and got a free kick on the right.
Terrell Forbes crossed it in and up went super Clarke Carlisle to
win yet another header and his knock down found Kevin Gallen to
flick his shot over the keeper for a 3-1 lead.
Gallen ran to the Rangers fans as
we had to pinch ourselves to see if this was real. Bristol City
had not let in a goal at home all season in the league and after
52 minutes we had scored three times. The QPR fans were signing
"We're gonna win the league" and not many in the stadium were willing
to argue.
The tannoy announcer who was so happy
half an hour ago now said something like "goalscorer for
mumble mumble Rangers, is mumble mumble Gallen". And he
wasn't shouting Goal anymore, perhaps they changed announcers at
half time.
We were playing some excellent stuff
and it almost got even better when Marc Bircham broke away and exchanged
passes with Gallen before hitting a cracking shot which was brilliantly
saved and tipped over the bar.
Bristol City had a fair amount of
possession but after losing their two main forwards through injury
in the first half they never looked like scoring and the best chance
they had turned into a pass into a group of QPR defenders. The QPR
end was full of joy and excitement, as we knew the game was won.
Richard Langley went down under a
heavy tackle, which saw both players injured. Langley limped off
and was replaced ten minutes later by Danny Murphy. It looked like
his knee which was hurt but I don't think it was serious.
Murphy went straight into midfield
and did well adding more steel to the side. Karl Connolly was desperate
for his hat trick but he looked dead on his feet near the end and
was replaced by Andy Thomson seconds after being booked for a rash
tackle.
Thomson had very little to do and
we finished the game comfortable winners as news came in that we
were top of the league.
The players came over to celebrate
with the fans as Ian Holloway hugged every player and clenched his
fists at the QPR fans shouting Yes.
Marc Bircham tried to get Danny Shittu
to do the pig bag dance and it was party time as we left the stadium.
Another cracking performance by Rangers and although league titles
are not won in September it is a great feeling to see QPR top of
the league and the QPR support who have had so much misery in recent
years finally have a team to be proud of.
Man of the Match: Kevin Gallen
Players Ratings
15. Simon Royce: Did well claiming
corners taking the pressure off the defence and made one good save
when we were under pressure in the first half. 7/10
2. Terrell Forbes: His crossing was
a bit better today but at the back he was as brilliant as he always
is. 8/10
33. Tommy Williams: Very dodgy in
the first half but the second goal gave him loads of confidence
and he did well against Murray in the second half. 7/10
4. Steve Palmer: Very dodgy in the
first half. The long diagonal ball caught him out a few times and
he looked all over the place at times. He got his game together
though in the second half. 6/10
5. Clarke Carlisle: Before the game
he turned to the QPR fans and screamed UR'ss to the travelling QPR
fans. That's what Clarke is all about, he gives everything for the
team and the fans, he was brilliant again today and my girlfriend
has asked for him to be given 10/10 for taking his shirt off at
the end of the game but he did lose out once in the air today so
he loses a mark for that :-) 9/10
6. Danny Shittu: Looks far more comfortable
in a back three alongside Carlisle. Still made a few error but he
is getting back to his best. 7/10
7. Matthew Rose: A vast improvement
on his early season form but still didn't have a great game. Should
have scored early on but worked hard for the team, lets hope he
builds on this and continues to improve. 7/10
11. Karl Connolly: His best performance
since Northampton away last season. He was a threat for most of
the game and deserved his two goals. He looked knackered at the
end though. 8/10
9. Richard Langley: Was surrounded
by three players every time he got the ball but still managed to
keep the ball most of the time and had a good game in central midfield.
The only shame was he never got a free kick around the penalty area.
7/10
20. Dennis Oli: Run his heart out
and looked a threat in the first half. Was unlucky not to score
with one header and one strong run created a good chance for Rose
I think but he was offside. 7/10
10. Kevin Gallen: The way he just
stands his ground and shields the ball from defenders is reminiscent
of Mark Hughes at his best. Another goal for Gallen and another
man of the match award. 9/10
Subs
8. Marc Bircham: Worked hard and helped
change the game in our favour. We looked a better balanced side
when he came on and he was unlucky not to score. 7/10
16. Danny Muprhy: Worked really hard
when he came on and deserved this chance to show what he can do.
7/10
27. Andy Thomson: Touched the ball
more than he did at Mansfield but didn't score this time. 7/10
