Ian Holloway
was forced into some more changes for
this game with Fraser Digby and Matthew
Rose out through injury and the subs
bench was one of the youngest I can
remember.
Rhys Evans
made his debut in goal whilst Aziz Ben
Askar made his first start since January
in defence. His return saw Palmer move
into midfield and Langley back on the
wing as Mark Perry was dropped to the
bench. Terrell Forbes went to right
back with Bignot back on the left whilst
Richard Pacquette replaced Doudou up
front.
Doudou, Wes Daly and Dennis Oli were
among the substitutes as we were down
to the bare bones of our squad for this
tough game. We started well though and
looked in no danger of conceding and
were better going forward.
Evans looked nervous at first and came
rushing out of his box to clear to balls
into the crowd but he soon settled down
and he will be pleased with his debut.
Going forward Leroy was looking dangerous
passing the ball well and his movement
off the ball was giving the midfield
an option on the left rather than seeing
the left winger just stand and wait
for the ball as we did earlier in the
season. One through ball with the outside
of his boot to Pacquette was excellent
but the young forward failed to take
advantage of the pass.
Wigan looked a shadow of the team that
has done well in recent weeks and we
should have gained the lead on several
occasions. A poor kick out by Filan
saw the ball land at Pacquettes feet
with an open goal to aim for but he
mis controlled the ball and it flew
back to the grateful goalkeeper.
A number of corners almost saw us take
the lead, Alex Bonnot had a good shot
well saved and Gallen went close with
a volley. Gallen was playing well up
front working very hard. He should have
given us the lead through after a good
ball through by Leroy, he ran towards
goal unmarked but hit his shot to low
and the keeper managed to save it. We
were playing well though and Danny Shittu
went close with a header, which he should
have scored from.
Some boos greeted the half time whistle
but that was stupidly harsh on the team
who were so dominant that Wigan had
failed to have a single effort on our
goal and they had not even won a corner.
For once
the problem wasn’t the system we were
playing or people being off form but
the fact that we didn’t have enough
quality to help Gallen up front and
looking at the bench we didn’t appear
to have much to change things.
The second half started the same as
the first with a couple of corners and
pressure but we didn’t look as dangerous
as we had in the first half. The crowd
began to call for Doudou but quite what
he was going to do to change things
was beyond me. He eventually came on
to replace Pacquette and almost shoved
my groans down my throat with a brilliant
volley, which was well saved.
I like Doudou and think he is a very
good player but at the moment he is
nowhere near as good as he should be
and the fans seem to expect too much
from him.
With twenty minutes to got the odds
of 80/1 given for a 0-0 draw looked
good but I found it hard to believe
we wouldn’t eventually score after all
the possession we had. Sadly we weren’t
the first to score and Wigan took an
undeserved lead.
A free kick on the half way line was
swung in and the big defender De Vos
rose well to head past Evans but the
marking was very poor. The boos started
around the ground and the Q Block began
to sing "Where’s our Rangers gone" which
was met with a lot of abuse aimed at
them from myself and many others.
We had witnessed
the team work so hard and play well
but fall a goal behind to Wigans first
attempt on goal in 70 minutes. Quite
how you can slag the team off for that
is a mystery to me but that’s what Loftus
Road is like at the moment.
The players confidence appeared to go
completely and Dennis Oli was brought
on for his debut with Leroy going off
to a few more boos. Langley then began
to make a few mistakes mis controlling
the ball and was told by our wonderful
support that he should rush off to Spurs
or words to that affect anyway.
Just as
the game looked up for us and I was
becoming increasingly fed up of our
supporters the game turned. Another
corner saw the ball fall to Bonnot and
his shot was heading for the back of
the net when a brilliant block on the
line saw it fly wide.
Four minutes of injury time were shown
and the chances of us scoring looked
slim at best until Kevin Gallen popped
up. Gallen had worked so hard all night
and after a pass by Langley he looked
up from the corner of the box and curled
a brilliant shot into the back of the
net to send the Rangers fans into jubilant
celebrations. In all honesty it took
me hours to calm down, as the excitement
was unbelievable
We almost grabbed a winner as well,
OK I say almost but a ball in from Bignot
when he was in a good position was wasted
but it seemed more exciting at the time.
Amazingly despite a much improved performance
and a last gasp cracker of a goal some
people still saw fit to boo the team
off and to those people I can’t for
the life of me understand why you go
to football.
So another point gained and as I said
on the site yesterday that wouldn’t
be the end of the world. We are now
five points behind sixth place and six
behind fifth place so the season is
still alive and lets hope the confidence
gained from that late draw will give
us a boost and help us in another bid
game on Saturday.
Man of
the Match: Kevin Gallen
Players Ratings
33. Rhys Evans: A good debut, got some
stick for his kicking but against a
strong wind any keeper would have struggled.
7/10
17. Terrell Forbes: A very good performance.
He defended really well and tried to
get forward and help Langley. His crossing
lets him down at times but he is improving
that aspect of his game. 8/10
11. Marcus Bignot: Defended well when
he had to but was never put under much
pressure. Linked well with Leroy in
the first half but didn’t get much of
the ball after the break. 7/10
28. Aziz Ben Askar: Good to see him
back and he looked good, defending well
and shows great composure on the ball.
7/10
31. Danny Shittu: Not his best game
as he tended to hoof the ball a bit
too often and should have scored with
a header. 6/10
4. Steve Palmer: Never looks as good
in midfield but was no worse than Peacock
and Rose have been in recent weeks.
I didn’t like seeing him tell Askar
to hoof it rather than pass the ball
as we looked a poorer side when we started
doing this. 6/10
26. Alex Bonnot: Very impressed with
Alex who is clearly playing for a new
contract. He was very unlucky not to
score and seems to be in his best form
of the season now. 7/10
9. Richard Langley: Faded in the second
half but one sublime pass to Pacquette
was worth the price of the pre match
hot dog. Good to see him last another
90 minutes and he was involved in that
crucial goal. 6/10
14. Leroy Griffiths: Leroy was excellent
in the first half, good skills, worked
his bollocks off and put in some great
crosses. It was only in the second half
when he stopped giving him the ball
that we faded from the game but all
in all he was the best player on the
pitch for the first 45 minutes. 8/10
18. Kevin Gallen: Every time we got
the ball in midfield Gallen was providing
an option and wanted the ball. It didn't
matter what wing we had the ball on,
Gallen was there wanting the ball to
feet and making things happen. His goal
was superb and thoroughly deserved.
8/10
22. Richard Pacquette: He needs to improve
his first touch but showed some nice
skills and good movement. I think he’ll
eventually be a good player. 6/10
Subs:
29. Doudou: Didn’t really do much apart
from that volley when he first came
on. 6/10
35. Dennis Oli: Good to see another
youngster get a chance. He worked hard
but wasn’t given much service. 6/10
