Another early start
for a home match as the queue to get Brentford tickets
was worse than I had expected. I arrived at the ground
at about ten to nine and the queue was almost as far
back as the Springbok, it wasn't this bad for the
Brighton and Cambridge ticket race.
No one had a problem getting
tickets in fact many just turned up at half two and
got a ticket without queuing which made those of us
waiting an hour and a half in the cold fell pretty
stupid. Some fans though were under the impression
that we only had 600 tickets, I wonder if this was
why so many turned up so early?
Anyway on with the football
and despite still being tired I was looking forward
to this game after a dismal run of late. For once
I was clever and waited to hear the team announced
before placing my first goal scorer bet and the team
had a few surprises in it.
Once again Paul Bruce
was in the starting eleven but thankfully Terrell
Forbes was back after injury and new loan Signing
Dominic Foley came in for Richard Pacquette.
The big shock was no Andy
Thomson although it was later discovered he was injured
in training this week. Doudou started up front whilst
Oliver Burgess kept his place on the right of midfield.
Rangers attacked the Loft in the first half which
is something I hate. It might not make much difference
but I always feel better when we are attacking the
Loft in the second half.
We started well though
looking to pass the ball rather than hoof it and played
some nice stuff in midfield. Doudou had our first
chance as he went on a great run holding off Oldham
defenders and using his skill and pace to get into
the box. His shot was well saved by the keeper but
no Rangers player was anywhere near the rebound and
it was easily cleared.
Doudou was causing a lot
of problems as he seemed very hungry and was chasing
for the ball back into midfield and creating openings
for Foley and Connolly. Another good move saw Connolly
have a great chance, he ran into the box and was in
space but seemed to have to much time as shot straight
at the keeper. A succession of corners from Burgess
were cleared but we were on top and looking pretty
comfortable just needed a goal and it came after about
half an hour.
A mix up in defence saw
Doudou clean through and he took his time and lobbed
the ball over the keeper and into the net. For a second
I thought he was going to miss it but I was so pleased
to see him score as his performances this season deserve
a goal.
After that we looked like
we would go on to get more goals. Doudou was still
causing problems and Burgess was doing well on the
right. The game then took a disappointing turn after
a free kick into the box found Foley and he appeared
to pull his hamstring as he jumped for the ball. Foley
was replaced by Dave Mcewen and surprisingly many
supporters around me began to moan and groan about
him.
Mcewen was soon involved
being hacked down by a terrible tackle from behind
but no free kick was given. This was just one of a
number of amazing decisions by the referee who was
awful. Tackles from behind went unpunished and when
he did notice then he never bothered with a yellow
card and was not fit to referee.
Before Foley went off
he was clearly pushed in the box for a penalty but
the ref chose to ignore this and instead blow for
free kicks whenever Doudou tried to win the ball.
Most of us were confident at half time we could go
on and win this game, Oldham looked poor and if we
could get a second I was sure we would win this.
We started the second
half looking half asleep as some poor defending by
Rose and Bruce gave Oldham a chance but they were
soon snuffed out after a corner. We weren't playing
as well as we did in the first half and we struggled
to keep the ball as well as we had been doing. Oldham
were no better though and we still and chances to
get that second goal.
The best of them fell
to Alex Bonnot who found himself in on goal after
a good team move. He ran into the box and had time
to shoot but just couldn't keep his shot down and
ended up hitting one of the many local School children
with discount tickets in the upper School end.
The referee was obviously
bored with the game as he blew at every opportunity
and changed the game with a terrible decision. Bruce
seemed to be Tipton up but Tipton just seemed to throw
himself on the floor as if he'd been shot and a free
kick was given. The linesman (who was just a few yards
away) gave nothing but the referee doesn't like to
take notice of the lino unless it's an offside.
You just knew we'd pay
for this and a free kick to the far post saw Balmer
head unmarked past Day into the bottom corner. It
was undeserved and chalk the assist up to the referee.
Rangers then looked nervous as we were caught between
going for a winner and holding on but Oldham were
not good enough to capitalise on our uncertainty.
Dave Mcewen was then taken
off after a disappointing performance and on came
Stuart Wardley. Wardley immediately added some height
up front and won a few headers well including one
which set Doudou clean through but his touch let him
down as he played it to close to the keeper and the
chance was gone. Holloway then make another change
brining on new signing Fernando De Ornelas for Oliver
Burgess and De Ornelas soon became the first booking
of the day with his first tackle. Welcome to the world
of shit referees Fernando.
The game looked over and
the four minutes of injury time didn't bring much
hope of a winner. Then a moment of madness almost
cost us the game but did cost us our goalkeeper.
An attack on the right
was slowly passed backwards and Matthew Rose gave
a very lazy and sloppy back pass to Chris Day, Day
had to rush out of goal to stop the danger and threw
himself into a 50/50 challenge which saved the point
but saw him on the floor in agony with a suspected
broken leg.
When things are going
wrong the reactions of players tells you a lot about
their character and sadly this summed up Matthew Rose.
His pass back to Day was awful but these things happen
it was a 50/50 ball and Day came out worse, I'm not
blaming Rose for that but what I am blaming Rose for
is his reaction.
nstead of holding his
hands up and admitting his mistakes and checking on
the condition of our keeper (I was in the upper loft
and could tell he'd broken his leg, Rose was 10 yards
away from him) he instead bent over and started rubbing
his bollocks. OK he did get a ball struck against
them a few minutes earlier but surely he should have
gone over to check on his keeper who could have a
serious injury.
Whilst he was standing
around feeling sorry for himself the much hated Stuart
Wardley ran forward took off his shirt and had no
hesitation to get himself in goal. Now I don't rate
Wardley very much but at least he showed some bollocks
(not literally) to take some responsibility when Mr
Rose was still to busy rubbing his.
Steve Palmer also seemed
like he was ready to go in goal and was straight over
to Day to check he was alright but as for Rose I was
just stunned as I stood waiting for him to do something
but he never showed any remorse and couldn't get off
the pitch quick enough. Wardley got a standing ovation
as he went in goal and Day received a huge ovation
as he was carried off.
Wardley's first job was
to take a goal kick which he did well and was cheered
every time he touched the ball, strangely enough the
cheers seemed to help Wardley perhaps we should try
doing that when he and others are playing in their
normal positions but maybe that's a bit to radical
for this day and age.
The referee then gave
another awful decision with a free kick right on the
touchline when the linesman had flagged for a throw.
He moved the ball ten years forward and thankfully
Rangers stood firm and Wardley didn't have to face
abuse by letting one in.
Full time was greeted
by There's only one Stuart Wardley which was the first
time I have heard that since he was a regular goal
scorer and the team was clapped off the pitch. When
I mentioned about the reactions of players summing
up their character earlier the same goes for referees.
For the first time in
along while the referee and linesman went straight
down the tunnel when normally they have to stand in
the middle of the pitch and walk off after the players.
Even the morons at Cambridge managed to get that right.
I get the feeling that the ref knew he had an awful
game and didn't want the stick from players or supporters.
Referees like this one should not be allowed in the
second division or at any level. If this had been
a Premiership game then Andy Gray would have spent
the next ten years analysing his cocks up on his silly
machines.
Man of the Match:
Doudou
Players Rating
1. Chris Day: I am absolutely
gutted about Day's injury, he has been superb all
season and I feel so sorry for him. He was incrediably
brave to make the tackle and we'll miss him. 8/10
17. Terrell Forbes: Great
to see him back and he had a decent game. Didn't overlap
as often as he can but probably not 100% fir yet and
didn't want to push him hamstring to hard. 7/10
3. Paul Bruce: Why is
he still in the team? Some will say he did well but
all he did was not make any huge cock ups. His positional
play and distribution is still awful. 5/10
4. Steve Palmer. Wearing
a blue and white headband to cover his head wound,
Palmer was as solid as ever. 7/10
12. Matthew Rose: As a
player he had a decent game but his actions at the
end left me disgusted. 6/10
10. Karl Connolly: Good
first half where he wanted the ball and was always
involved but second half he had to play deep to help
Bruce and was not really involved much. 6/10
26. Alex Bonnot: Should
have scored in the second half but showed why he sits
deep in midfield. Worked hard and played some nice
passes . 7/10
11.Marcus Bignot: Gets
stuck in all over the pitch and although he won't
create much for you his work rate and desire is very
important to the team. 7/10
24. Oliver Burgess: Quite
impressive at times, gets stuck in and wins tackles
and has a lot of energy. Gave the ball away too often
in the second half as the team looked a bit nervous.
7/10
18. Dominc Foley: Good
movement off the ball to allow Doudou space and a
shame he went of with his injury. 7/10
29.Doudou: Outstanding
in the first half as he tore Oldham apart but second
half he didn't get enough of the ball to make much
of an impact. 8/10
Subs
19.Dave Mcewen: I was
a bit disappointed with him really, he didn't do much
but once again the midfield didn't create anything
for him.
7. Stuart Wardley: Had
a good game when he came on, won a few headers and
linked the play well and well done to him for going
in goal. That said a lot about the kind of bloke Wardley
is and outs those booing his introduction to shame.
7/10
33. Fernando De Ornelas:
didn't really get the chance to do much. 6/1
