The last game of the season
wasn't the huge game we all wanted it to be but instead
it meant nothing to our league position and many travelled
to the game to give the players a good send off. Ian
Holloway made just two changes from last week's team.
Leroy Griffiths came in for Jerome
Thomas and Andy Thomson made possibly his last appearance
for QPR with Dominic Foley dropping to the bench.
It was good to see former Rangers player
Paul Murray again and he looked determined to make
an impression on this game. Oldham started the better
of the two teams with Murray storming through the
midfield to cause problems. He almost gave them the
lead running from deep and Peacock and Rose failed
to track his run and he was clean through but he delayed
his shot to long and allowed Evans the chance to save
at his feet.
Murray was looking sharp and did well
on the wing crossing for Baudet to fire over but the
Rangers players looked like they were thinking about
their summer holidays rather looking to end the season
with a bang. We were doing our bit in the away end
getting behind the team with the usual array of songs
but a goal didn't look far away.
It came after ten minutes and it was
a cross from the left which saw Baudet totally unmarked
in the middle and he had time to pick his spot and
fire into the back of the net. I thought Evans could
have done better with it as he got a hand to it and
seemed to lack to power to punch it out. Still it
was no more than Oldham deserved after a good start
from the home start.
The goal woke Rangers up and we spent
the rest of the half up the other end of the pitch.
Langley began to get involved and linked well with
Forbes on the right and one cross went over to Griffiths
whose shot was well blocked by the defence.
We were looking dangerous from set
pieces and Steve Palmer went close having fly just
over and Forbes had a shot cleared off the line. A
Langley free kick found Thomson unmarked but he volleyed
wide and Peacock had a shot well saved. We were playing
much better and deserved to get level but we just
couldn't get a goal whilst we were on top.
Leroy was his usual self doing some
very good things then letting himself down with a
poor final ball. Gallen was linking the play well
up front but the midfield weren't supporting him and
Thomson enough so we ended the half a goal down.
I fancied us to step up in the second
half and get a goal but the teams came out for the
second half and produced a typical end of season display.
Peacock and Rose had half chances but it was all a
bit stop start as the referee failed to play the advantage
for either side and a number of players found themselves
in the book despite not one bad tackle during the
game. Langley was booked for throwing a ball at Smarts
head, which was pretty childish, but the elbow thrown
by Smart just before that aimed at Bignot went unpunished.
Rangers made a change with Junior Agogo
coming on for Leroy and Agogo almost made a great
start. He got the ball on the left cut inside and
hit a curling effort, which was just tipped over by
the keeper. It was a bit like Bignots effort against
Bury but from further out. From the corner we didn't
produce much.
Oldham had a fair share of chances
at the other end. One chip saw Evans beaten but it
hit the bar and the rebound saw a diving header also
smash against the bar much to out relief. Danny Murphy
and Dominc Foley then came on for Bignot and Gallen
and we had a few late chances to get level. The best
of these came to Andy Thomson who found himself clean
through but his shot was saved and in a similar position
soon after he fired high and over perhaps not realising
how much time he had.
Danny Murphy got caught in possession
on the left and the cross found an Oldham forward
unmarked but he somehow headed over when it seemed
easier to score. The warning to stay off the pitch
was ignored as usual and as the final whistle went
the Oldham fans came onto the pitch to celebrate a
good season. The Rangers players came over to the
fans and threw shirts, boots, shorts and shinpads
into the away end with Richard Langley almost naked
by the end of it all.
Sadly some kids ended up fighting over
Langley's shirt and one of the kid's dads seemed to
lose the plot and was held back by the police. Well
the season ended as it started with a nightmare journey
home on Virgin trains. After waiting half an hour
for a train back to Manchester we got on the 7.14
to reading no problem but didn't have time for a pint.
The journey was going pretty well,
we sat with some Southend and a Bristol Rovers fan.
The Southend fans had been to Macclesfield and had
got the goalkeepers gloves and boots so were well
happy. They told us that whilst waiting for the train
the one to Manchester turned up and Alex Ferguson,
Silverstre and Blanc all got off and chatted to them.
It was the highlight of their season and it did make
me laugh to hear them describe sir Alex as having
a very red face.
Also the Rovers fan told us that when
they fell from 1st to 7th under Holloway it was more
down to the players. He reckons that Roberts and Cureton
were told by the chairmen they had to go and they
lost interest in the run and he is gutted that Holloway
was sacked. He didn't have much good to say about
Gerry Francis either but on to the disaster.
We arrived at Birmingham to be told
that the engine needed to be replaced and half an
hour later the train was cancelled so just like when
we went to Bury we were stuck in Birmingham with no
way to get home. They eventually organised a coach
for us, which was eventful to say the least as the
two and a half hour drive was spent with four Spurs
fans singing non stop and screaming at the QPR fans
on board to give us song.
That has to be the longest two and
a half hours I've ever had to sit through. Some of
the songs were funny though especially the ones about
Sol Campbell (I get the feeling they don't like him)
but the No Surrender stuff got a bit annoying after
a while. So instead of getting home at 11 it was closer
to 1 in the morning so the season ended on a sour
note really. So a disappointing end to the season.
The game was what most people expected
I think but it's shame Andy Thomson didn't end the
season with a goal as he deserves it. Thanks to the
players and coaching staff for all their efforts this
season. It's been a season I have enjoyed despite
missing out on promotion but some fresh faces brought
in during the summer might see us have an even better
one next year.
Man of the Match: Terrell Forbes
Players Ratings
33. Rhys Evans: His kicking was very
good in the first half and he catches all the crosses
well but I felt he could have done better with the
goal. 6/10
17. Terrell Forbes: One of the few
players to play to their potential. He defends brilliantly
and gets forward well. 8/10
11. Marcus Bignot: He never lets you
down and I hope this is not his last game for us.
His contract is up in the summer but he can play anywhere
in the team for us and always gives his best. 7/10
4. Steve Palmer: Lacked the urgency
he has shown in other games this season but didn't
do anything wrong. 7/10
31. Danny Shittu: A monster at the
back and next year I think he will get even better.
7/10
8. Gavin Peacock: He's been a good
servant to the club but I hope this was his last game.
His legs have gone and his passing is awful. 5/10
12. Matthew Rose: He did very little
during the game and looked like the Matthew Rose of
last season. 5/10
9. Richard Langley: Looked good during
the first half but faded after the break until the
last ten minutes when he showed the urgency sadly
lacing for the first 80 minutes. 6/10
14. Leroy Griffiths: His first touch
let him down but he is learning all the time and will
be a good player if he works on the weak aspects of
his games. 6/10
18. Kevin Gallen: Not his best game.
He linked the play well but his lack of pace was exposed
by Oldham and Holloway was right to take him off.
6/10
27. Andy Thomson: He seemed to be protecting
his back during the game but still looked our biggest
threat and it will be very sad if he leaves in the
summer. 7/10
Subs:
34. Dominic Foley: I'm not a fan of
Foley. He is very poor in the air and doesn't give
us anything we don;t already have. 5/10
23. Danny Murphy: Came on to a huge
ovation from the Rangers fans but he was a bit disappointing
and he won't get his place back playing like this.
6/10
36. Junior Agogo: One good shot but
he didn't do much else. Reminds me of Sammy Koejoe
which is not a good thing but hard to judge him on
half an hour today. 6/10
