After a poor run
of results we needed to get back to winning
ways at Notts County and the 2,000 strong army
of supporters who made the trip north were not
disappointed. Upon arriving at the ground it
was better than I had expected and the view
was pretty impressive from behind the goal.
Shame about the
atmosphere though as Notts County fans sat in
near silence for the entire game with the only
noise coming from the away end as we tried to
encourage the team and help them get that much
needed victory.
Ian Holloway made
a few changes to the team with Andy Thomson
back in the side replacing the injured Dominic
Foley. Frazer Digby made his debut in goal whilst
Mark Perry replaced Bonnot and new signing Fernando
De Ornelas in for the unfortunate Oliver Burgess
who I thought had done enough to keep his place.
The one player I was looking out for was Ian
Baraclough but the former QPR defender was not
involved in the game.
Rangers attacked
towards the away fans in the first half and
we started quite brightly. Doudou and Thomson
looked sharp up front and created some half
chances but never really threatened the keeper
early on.
Notts County didn't
look to good but we were playing poorly at the
back and allowed them several chances, which
could and should have finished us off.
Danny Allsopp found
himself clean through after poor defending but
Digby pushed the shot wide before Tony Hackworth
also saw a good chance well saved.
We were giving them
far to much space as the defence looked all
over the place at times and Caskey and Cas both
missed excellent chances to give the home side
the lead. We were riding our luck at the back
but still had enjoyed plenty of possession in
the first half and had a few half chances to
go in front. Andy Thomson hit a shot just wide
but was offside anyway and four excellent crosses
by Paul Bruce were cleared and you got the impression
that if a talker forward or midfield player
like Wardley was playing we might have got a
goal from this.
But at half time
it was goaless and despite all the chances Notts
County had I felt we were playing OK and would
get at least a draw from the game. Second half
saw Stuart Wardley on for Fernando who had been
disappointing in his debut for the club.
The half continued
in the same way as the first with Notts County
having a few chances but never really putting
us under much pressure, most of their chances
were coming from bad defending by Palmer and
Rose
We weren't creating
much going forward but the midfield was working
very hard for each over and it looked like we
were going to grind out a point until the last
quarter of the game when the forwards came to
life.
A free kick on the
left gave us a chance and we took it. Mark Perry
swung the ball in and Wardley got up well to
win the header but the ball was half cleared
to Bignot, his shot was blocked and ran kindly
to Andy Thomson who took his chance well despite
the protests of the defenders claiming he was
offiside.
It was difficult
to see if he was offside or not but after some
abysmal offsides given against us in recent
weeks we deserved a change of luck. The 2000
Rangers fans were celebrating and signing Jingle
Bells when we broke again just a minute later.
Connolly did well
again on the left and was in plenty of space,
He took his time and produced an excellent cross
for Andy Thomson to score QPR's first headed
goal of the season and the away end erupted
with a mixture of delight and relief. The last
fifteen minutes saw Rangers fans signing loud
and proud and enjoying the game which in truth
had been far from a classic but the kind of
tight game we need to be winning if we want
to go up.
Thomson could and
should have grabbed the hat trick when he tried
to take it round the keeper but took one touch
to many and the chance was gone.
Frazer Digby still
had some work to do making some more excellent
saves and was almost caught out by a wicked
curling cross and he did well not to fall over
the line as he dived to catch it. Leroy Griffiths
came on for the excellent Doudou in the last
few minutes but the game was over and it was
a well earned three points for QPR.
Other teams would
have punished us with the number of chances
they had but Digby was in inspired form and
the hard work and obvious team spirit that we
have saw us through in a game we simply had
to win. Despite the talk of a relegation struggle
among some fans, this win moves us within a
point of the playoffs and with Richard Langley
due back soon the future is looking much brighter
for QPR.
Man of the Match:
Fraser Digby
Players Ratings
30. Fraser Digby:
We were all worried about the goalkeeper but
we were proved wrong with a stunning display
by Digby. He kept us in the gamewith some excellent
saves and claimed his crosses with confidence.
You wouldn't have thought he hasn't played a
first team game for 18 months. 9/10
17.Terrell Forbes:
He's not overlapping as much as he was earlier
in the season which has given us less attacking
options but he defended well and he may not
be 100% fit yet after his recent injury. 7/10
3. Paul Bruce: Put
in 4 brilliant crosses when we had two midget
strikers up front and when 6 foot Wardley came
on he didn't get one cross in all half. Defensively
awful at times but better than he has been recently
6/10
4.Steve Palmer;
Perhaps his worst performance so far this season
as he looked all over the place at times and
tended to go for the long ball to often when
a simple pass was on. Still organises those
around him well but his own marking at times
was non-existent. 6/10 1
2. Matthew Rose:
To His credit he tries to pass the ball out
of defence but when put under pressure by forwards
he looks in trouble. He gave to much space to
the forwards and was caught out several times
which should have led to goals. 6/10
10. Karl Connolly:
Much better from Connolly who was always involved
in the first half holding onto the ball on the
left and using some good skills to beat players
and bring others into play. Great cross for
the second goal after he had faded from the
game for about ten minutes, 8/10
11. Marcus Bignot:
Tough in the tackle and worked hard but not
his best game in midfield. Summed his character
up by getting the ball kicked into his nuts
and instead of lying on the floor for ten minute
she took a deep breath and then charged into
another tackle. Perhaps one of our defenders
should take note. 7/10
2. Mark Perry: Goes
about his job with little fuss and half the
time you don't notice he's there. In the first
half though he was always trying to encourage
the team and passed the ball well. 7/10
32. Fernando De
Ornelas: as debuts go this was one to forget.
Fernando was very quiet and not really involved.
He did show glimpses of talent with two superb
cross-field balls, the likes of which David
Bardsley and Clive Wilson used to do every week
but we haven't seen much of since. 5/10
29.Doudou: Worked
well with Thomson as his movement and skill
compliment the finishing talents of Thomson
better than any other partnership this season.
Doudou has plenty to work on but he never stops
running and has the ability to cause defences
so many problems. 7/10
27. Andy Thomson:
Four chances, two goals, can't complain can
you? Well some QPR fans were giving him some
stick in the first half, which is frankly outrageous
after all he has done for us. No wonder he headed
straight for the tunnel after the game. 8/10
Subs:
7. Stuart Wardley:
Once again he came on and did well and appears
to have his confidence restored. You know what
you are going to get from Wardley which is 100%
commitment and he'll run from box to box all
afternoon for the team. He did that and also
had a hand in the goal. His loan move will probably
be cancelled now as he looks to have a future
again at Loftus Road. 7/10
14. Leroy
Griffiths: Not on for long enough to make much
of an impression. 6/10
