Glasgow Celtic 2

  H.Larssen

L.Moravcik

The first pre season game of the season and one of the biggest teams to visit Loftus Road is recent years. Celtic arrived in London backed by a huge travelling support which filled the school and Ellerslie Road stand and plenty more Celtic shirts were seen in in the Loft as well.

Celtic had a full strength side whilst Rangers gave debuts to new signings Chris Day, Steve Palmer, Torrell Forbes and Mohammed Barr and trialist Bonner in midfield.

The team lined up with Day in goal (being coached by Tony Roberts before the game which made his first touch, a sliced clearance into Ellerslie Road, even funnier), Back four of Bruce, Forbes, Palmer and Bignot, midfield was Connolly, Peacock, Bonnet and Barr whilst up front was Wardley and Thomson.

Rangers were wearing the new kit we got to vote for on the official site (which can be seen on this page) and it was alright in my opinion. The badge is in the middle like in the 95/96 kit and the hoops are a bit darker than last year.

Back to the game though and it was a good atmosphere in and outside the ground, a coupe of celtic fans were shaking our hands wishing us luck and having a laugh.

Its almost impossible to judge the lads on this display, after 1 minute it looked like a massacre was on the cards but we did quite well and although Celtic were playing well within themselves, 2-0 is a decent result really.

Celtic did have other chances in the first half. Larssen had one half chance which was well defended by Rangers whilst Chris Sutton found himself though but sliced his shot well wide. Celtic trialist Joonas Kolkka almost made it 2-0 before half time.

The Finnish international midfielder is on trial from PSV Eindhoven and with his first real contribution of the game he turned and fired in a powerful shot from the edge of the box which beat Chris Day but hit the post.

We had a few half chances. Firstly Wardley made a good run but failed to put though Thomson who was unmarked in the middle and Thomson also went close with a volley which was blocked by a Celtic defender.

We had a fair amount of possession in the first half but Celtic looked comfortable throughout and almost got a second for a Larssen free kick but he fired over.

Second half saw a few changes, Leroy Griffiths came on to make his debut in place of Andy Thomson and Barr was replaced by Sammy Koejoe. The half began though with Celtic fans on the pitch, one of which ran to Larssen and kissed the strikers feet.

Thankfully the stewards didn't overreact as they sometimes tend to do and the mini invasion was allowed to go off in the fun way it was intended.

As the game kicked off again it was Leroy Griffiths looking lively early on trying to cause problems but the game followed a similar pattern with us having a fair amount of possession but Celtic looked the more likely to score.

That second goal finally came after both sides made several substitutions. Lubomir Moravcik got the goal with a fine strike past Day to guarantee the win for the Scottish Champions.

Rangers brought on several more trialists including Martin Bullock who Holloway hopes to sign this week from Barnsley.

It was getting so confusing with all the substitutions at one point we had twelve players on the pitch until he linesman realised the mistake and Bonner came off.

Celtic had a few more chances to get more goals but one excellent save by Day was followed by some poor finishing to keep it at 2-0.

A few thoughts on the new boys,Chris Day made one great save in the 2nd half and did OK, not much chance with the goals but kicking was a bit dodgy at times. Steve Palmer had a very good game, looked assured at the back and added some experience.

Terrell Forbes had an excellent game and was out best player in my view doing well against Larssen and Sutton all game and got a standing ovation when he went off.

In midfield we had Bonnet or guy with the long hair as I am probably wrong with the name, he was a neat and tidy player and looked alright, Barr had a quiet game but hard to judge in this sort of game. Griffiths came on and did well and loads of others came on but I had no idea who half of them were as the tannoy wasn't very clear in the lower loft. Of the established players it was good to see them all back.

They were all did OK, Bignot annoyed Larsson with some of his tackles (even in a friendly he is a hard bastard), Bruce did OK at left back better than I thought he would, Peacock had a decent game and now looks like a cross between Juan Veron and Stone Cold Steve Austin with his shaved head, at least he proved to not always believe what you read in the papers.

It took Wardley 31 minutes to be called a useless c**t by the lower loft, he did his best but again hard to judge in these sort of games if he has improved or not. Thomson and Koejeo didn't do much and Connolly looked knackered from the first minute but showed some nice touches in patches.

So all in all a decent days work for Rangers, we knew we were going to lose but we kept the score down and played some good stuff at times, very encouraging but as ever with friendlies you just can't tell how good these players are until the season actually starts but I feel better now I've seen them in action.
