It was family day at Loftus
Road as young kids with their faces painted arrived at loftus
Road and adults took the chance to come and see the new
QPR team with prices as cheap as £5 a ticket.
I was quite surprised on my
way to the ground how many kids had QPR shirts on. I expected
most of them to be Man Utd or Chelsea fans here because
it was cheap so it was nice to see than a fair proportion
of those kids were QPR fans.
Some people dislike these sort
of days but if we don't try and bring locals kids to the
club then we won't have another generation of supporters
to support the club. The atmosphere was pretty good around
the ground as the teams came out and it was great to see
Loftus Road so full for our biggest crowd of the season.
It was now down to the players
to put on a good show and move into the playoffs. As expected
Danny Murphy was rested and Marcus Bignot went to left back
with Doudou back on the wing and as the game kicked off
we attacked the Loft end in the first half.
Tony Scully was in the Cambridge
side and got a few boos as his name was announced but he
almost shit those boos up with a strong run down the left
and his excellent cross was headed just wide to give us
an early scare.
We soon settled down though
and looked very good going forward. Leroy was looking sharp
on the left and we soon had a great chance to take the lead. Some
good passing in midfield saw Andy Thomson put clear and
one on one with the keeper but with plenty of time he volleyed
high over the bar. Thomson had the chance to make up for
that miss soon after with a much easier chance. A nice ball
by Peacock saw him clean through again but he couldn't keep
his shot down and volleyed again high over the bar. He looked
pretty angry with himself for missing a chance I am sure
he would have buried earlier on in the season.
Gavin Peacock hit a cracking
shot from outside the area which flew just over as we piled
the pressure on. We had a great spell where Cambridge were
all over the place as we passed the ball well and should
have taken the lead.
A series of corners came to
nothing and twice Cambridge players almost scored own goals.
One came from a Matthew Rose cross and a clearance was sliced
back over his own crossbar by Angus and soon after in a
similar the ball was almost put in his own net again and
it seemed only a matter of time before we scored.
We began to get furstarted though
and the attacks started to break down with some sloppy play
and Cambridge began to grow in confidence. Doudou was being
kept out easily as he continued to run himself into trouble
and the midfield who were all to eager to get forward at
the start began to sit back and allow Cambridge to come
forward.
The old long ball from defence
began to rear its head and the anger of the crowd began
which didn't help the young players in our team. By half
time Cambridge had done their job well and almost took the
lead after Palmer was caught out for pace and only just
recovered in time to see the Cambridge forward slice his
shot wide.
Danny Shittu then seemed to
bring down Dave Kitson in the box but the ref waved play
on much to the relief of the home fans. I said to my g/f
at the end of the first half to listen to the reaction when
the ref blows for half time. We're playing alright but look
low on confidence so will we clap them off and give them
a boost or give them a mixture of boos and silence. I'll
leave you to guess which one the fans choose and no wonder
the players don't like playing at home.
The game was there for the taking
though as Cambridge looked dodgy at the back but both sides
changed things at half time and the game was totally different
in the second half.
Holloway appeared to be worried
by Palmer being caught out for pace so the captain moved
to left back with Bignot going on the right and Forbes in
his favoured centre back role. Cambridge also made a change
at the back and went with five defenders after taking Scully
off and that change had a big impact on the second half.
We just didn't seem to know
how to break them down and from early on it seemed that
only one team was going to win it and it wasn't us. Dave
Kitson found himself in space and hit a great volley which
he tipped over and he made an even better save from the
corner as a header aiming for the bottom corner was again
kept out by the Rangers keeper. We were looking a shadow
of the side we had seen in the first half and we had nothing
goiong forward.
Cambridge looked the better
side and the more likely to go and get a winner. From another
corner Ashbee hit a stunning 30 yard volley which looked
a certain goal but Digby produced an amazing save as he
threw himself to his right and caught the ball and thankfully
landed on the line rather than over it.
The shot was so powerful it
made the save look even better and there was no doubt that
Digby was keeping us in this game. The fans were shocked
into silence and the team needed us to help them raise their
game but sadly the frustration had got to much for the supporters
and the players were on their own.
Gallen almost got the goal we
were desperate for as Thomson put him clear but his shot
was saved by Perez. Soon after Holloway made a strange decision
to take off both Thomson and Gallen and bring on Pacquette
and Connolly. I couldn't understand why we took them both
off and it didn't change too much. The problem again was
in midfield as played to many long balls and didn't try
and control the ball in the middle of the pitch.
Finally a change was made in
midfield as Richard Langley came on to replace Terrell Forbes
and add something to the midfield. Langley was involved
quickly and hit a good cross field ball to Bignot to spread
the play and stretch the opposition like no one else had
done for the previous 80 minutes. He was then involved in
a good move which almost lead to a winning goal. He exchanged
passes with Connolly and his shot from the edge of the area
went just inches wide.
It was the best he has looked
since returning from injury but he couldn't inspire us to
three points and a late corner was our last chance but Perez
comfortably caught that and then celebrated winning a point
as the ref blew the final whistle.
The Rangers players looked dejected
and left the pitch to a chorus of boos and moans and it
has to be looked at as two points dropped rather than one
gained.
Man of the Match: Fraser
Digby
Players Ratings
30. Fraser Digby: Kept us in
the game and made some superb saves. He has been an excellent
replacement for Chris Day and is probably the best shot
stopper we have had for some time. 9/10
17. Terrell Forbes: Got forward
well in the first half but went into the middle in the second
half and didn't look as comfortable. 6/10
11. Marcus Bignot: Solid at
both left back and right back. He is very good defensively
and does his best to support the attacks but his crossing
tends to let him down. 7/10
4. Steve Palmer: Caught out
for pace in the first half but was solid as ever for most
of the game 7/10
31. Danny Shittu: Dominated
in the air against a tough opponent but needs to stop hoofing
the ball and try and pass to the midfield. 7/10
8. Gavin Peacock: Played far
to deep after a good start and didn't pass the ball anywhere
near as he can do. 6/10
12. Matthew Rose: Like Peacock
he started very well and was always involved but after a
good opening spell he sat to deep and was hardly involved
again. 6/10
14. Leroy Griffiths: Ran his
heart out in the first half and looked a constant threat
but his crossing is just not good enough and he faded after
half time. 6/10
29. Doudou: A very poor game
by his standards. He didn't pass the ball when he should
have and looked fed up. Perhaps the rumours of him being
homesick are true as he didn't look his usual self. 5/10
27. Andy Thomson: Not an afternoon
he'll want to remember. He missed two sitters and faded
after that like most of his team mates. It doesn't help
him though when we hoof the ball over his head. 6/10
18. Kevin Gallen: Same story
as everyone else really. He started well but as we started
to hoof it he faded and didn't look the same player. 6/10
Subs
9. Richard Langley: Looked
stronger than he has done since his injury and almost scored
a brilliant winning goal. 7/10
10. Karl Connolly: Didn't do
much but like the other forwards was not helped by the long
ball game we had resorted to. 6/10
22. Richard Pacquette:
Worked hard and got into some good positions but it just
wasn't his day. 6/10
