Cambridge away was one of the
first fixtures I looked out for when the list was published
in June. For as long as I can remember I have gone along to
QPR games with friends from Cambridge and ever since we were
relegated last April we have looked forward to this trip and
lets just say it was an eventful day.
We arrived at the station at about
1pm but were told the wait for a taxi to the station was up
to one hour. You see none of us had realised that the students
go back to University this weekend so this was probably the
busiest day of the year for taxis in Cambridge. Luckily we
managed to get a lift to the Greyhound pub, which was about
a five-minute walk from the ground.
We were all looking forward to
the game despite the fact that my girlfriend and me had a
horrendous hangover from the night before. Still after a few
pre match drinks and a walk through a cow field we arrived
at the Abbey.
Awaiting us were several QPR fans
who didn't have tickets and were sent away by the police but
inside the stadium it seemed that many QPR fans were sitting
in the main stand after buying tickets from the club with
the free membership card.
As for the team news, well I was
pretty shocked to see no Marcus Bignot in the starting eleven
and Alex Bonnot replaced him and Karl Connolly was also dropped
to the bench as Dou Dou started after impressing on Tuesday
night. It later emerged that Bignot's girlfriend had gone
into labour on Friday night so Marcus didn't get any sleep.
Holloway felt it was best to give
Marcus a rest but he was sorely missed in midfield. Looking
at the Cambridge team you could tell straight away how they
would play. Everyone of them seemed to be a giant and the
young forward Dave Kitson was very similar to Peter Crouch
expect he was ginger. Cambridge started by being very physical
in midfield and piling high balls forward.
You knew how they would play but
we just didn't cope with it. A long throw into the box saw
the giants jump for the ball and a scramble followed. Rangers
had several chances to clear the ball but didn't and Dave
Kitson turned the ball past Chris Day.
It was the worst possible start
to the game and it almost got even worse as the defence and
midfield just did not cope with the Cambridge tactics. Every
corner and long throw caused chaos in the QPR defence and
Kitson had several chances to extend the lead but thanks to
Chris Day and some wasteful finishing the score stayed at
1-0.
When we did get the ball down
and play it we looked a better side but our own version of
the long throw by Leroy Griffiths just wasn't working as we
continually failed to win the header at the near post. We
did though have a golden opportunity to draw level and Dou
Dou was put clean through in acres of space but snatched at
his shot, which rolled into the arms of Lionel Perez.
He should have taken a touch
and rolled it onto the bottom corner but his effort was pretty
pathetic. French striker Armand One had a great chance when
he ran through unchallenged and his shot was saved by Day
who made several excellent stops in the first half.
During the first half though most
QPR fans were furious with the referee and linesman who were
awful. The amount of offisdes given that were clearly not
offisde made you wonder what these officials were on. Last
time I checked the rule was that when the ball is played you
are allowed to be level but as balls went over the top and
Andy Thomson ran PAST the last defender the flag shot up.
I honestly don't think the linesman
knew the offside rule and neither of them should ever be allowed
to officiate another game again. At half time the officials
were booed off and most of us agreed that Holloway had to
make some changes at half time.
Sure enough he did as Richard
Pacquette was brought on for Dou Dou.
As the teams came out for the
second half Terrell Forbes came out on his own to chants of
"On your own" and "We only need one man" to which Terrell
laughed at and acknowledged the QPR supporters. Marcus Bignot,
Wardley and Connolly were all warming up on the pitch and
laughed along with the QPR fans before Bignot went round the
team to encourage them before going back to the bench.
Straight away we looked much better
and Richard Pacquette found himself clean through but his
shot was palmed away by Perez. Pacquette then had another
chance as he turned and shot just over the bar. Cambridge
still looked dangerous from long throws and again we failed
to deal with it and this time Tom Youngs was on hand to nudge
the ball past Chris Day to make it 2-0.
To our credit the team never gave
in and pretty much dominated the rest of the game. Karl Connolly
was brought on for Leroy Griffiths and if the linesman had
checked the offside rules at half time we might have had a
goal after Thomson ran through but that bit in the rule that
says when the ball is played just seemed to go over this blokes
head.
Despite being 2-0 up some of the
time wasting performed by Perez was unbelievable. After every
shot went side or over the bar he ran out to shout at his
defender and took an age to walk back and take the goal kick.
The thing was the referee never once spoke to him about this
and allowed Perez to get away with it time after time and
he never appeared to be stopping his watch.
Finally we got a goal back as
Karl Connolly got the ball from 25 yards out and hit an excellent
shot into the bottom corner. It was a well deserved goal for
Connolly who had done well since coming off the bench. From
her eon Cambridge appeared to fall apart as we created chance
after chance.
Pacquette had two more good chances
but Perez was in excellent form and a Mark Perry free kick
was curled just over. Andy Thomson then ran through on goal
but was hacked down by a defender juts outside the box and
it got very confusing. The referee sent the defender off and
the linesman appeared to be indicating a penalty before walking
back to give a free kick. To be honest I thought it was a
free kick not a penalty but Connolly didn't look too happy
after he put the ball on the spot.
Anyway the free kick was wasted
but we continued to press forward. Marcus Bignot was now on
for Bonnot and Terrell Forbes began to get forward more and
more along with Steve Palmer. Mark Perry found himself in
space and from outside the area he curled an excellent shot
into the top corner but Perez again produced a magnificent
save.
As the time ticked away the linesman
continued to give some crazy offside decisions and with almost
the last kick of the game Christer Warren shot just inches
past the post with the keeper beaten.
The final whistle was greeted
with boos and abuse for the officials but the team were cheered
off. We didn't start well and have to improve if we want to
go up but the character shown in the second half was excellent
and we are not far away from being a very good side in this
division.
As the players walked off all
hell broke loose with pc 1082, which is mentioned, in greater
detail on the news page of this site but once back in the
pub the feeling of dejection really hit us.
We still ended up having a good
night out despite the day being ruined by an idiot policeman
and some awful officiating. I personally hope that Mr R.J.
Beeby, Mr D.J. Cann and Mr M.Dexter never officiate a QPR
match again. This isn't sour grapes because we lost I just
feel cheated by three men who seemed to have no idea how to
referee a game of football.
Man of the Match: Chris
Day
Players Ratings
1. Chris Day: If it hasn't been
for Chris Day we would have been 3 or 4 goals down at half
time. He made some excellent saves and his kicking is getting
better all the time. 8/10
17. Terrell Forbes: Not his best
game but was still better than most other in QPR shirts. Always
tries to get forward and should be given the ball more from
goal kicks. 7/10
15. Christer Warren: Didn't do
a lot wrong and was unlucky not to score. His positional sense
is still frightening at times but he wasn't punished to often
today. 7/10
4. Steve Palmer: Struggled at
times against the big Cambridge attack but still managed to
cut out a lot of attacks and almost grabbed a late goal when
he went up front. 7/10
28. Aziz Ben Askar: Some of this
passing from the back is a joy to see but he did struggle
at the start against One and Kitson. 7/10
12. Matthew Rose: Did ok at times
passing the ball well and winning some tackles but seemed
to be getting a lot of stick from the Rangers fans.7/10
26. Alex Bonnot: Looked good going
forward but we needed a bit more bite in midfield and that's
not really what Bonnot is about. 6/10
29. Dou Dou: Showed why Holloway
keeps him on the bench and then brings him on. He looked very
quiet at times although we need to get the ball to him on
the floor to see the best of him. 6/10
14. Leroy Griffiths: He seems
to have a good footballing brain and makes good runs but it
just didn't happen for him and Holloway was right to take
him off. 6/10
27. Andy Thomson: A much better
all round performance but no goal this time. Looks full of
confidence though. 7/10
subs
22. Richard Pacquette: Had several
chances to score but seemed to snatch at them, we probably
wanted Thomson in those positions and we would have scored.
Very promising though and the best I have seen him play so
far. 7/10
10. Karl Connolly: Looked bright
and desperate to impress and scored a cracking goal. 7/10
11. Marcus Bignot: Despite being
up all night and not getting any sleep he still looked the
player with the most energy on the pitch. 7/10
