"Do you know, I haven't seen QPR win away since January 2000?" Those were the thoughts going through my mind on Saturday morning as we headed off to sunny Bury for our first away game of the season. I thought back to that last day I had seen us win away, a last minute Richard Langley goal at Swindon and talk was of us getting into the playoffs and getting back into the Premiership.

God that seems like years ago now. It's seemed ridiculous that it had been so long since an away win for me. But this was a new look QPR team, a team who want to fight for each over and pass the ball, a team who are organised and work as a team rather than for themselves and it's a team I am very proud of despite them only being together for a few weeks.

We arrived at the ground about 20 minutes before kick off and the stand wasn't a water full at that stage but by the time we kicked off it looked as if we have just over 1,000 supporters signing and getting behind the team. It was the same side that beat Stoke last week but new signing Mombo was on the bench instead of Griffiths.

Rangers attacked towards us in the first half and we started well when Wardley won a flick on and Thomson showed excellent movement to get away from his marker but was quickly closed down by the keeper. That was as good as it got though in the early stages as we started quite poorly. Bury were closing us down quickly in midfield and from a long throw (and this was a amazingly long throw) we lost our way at the back allowed Mike Nelson to give Bury the lead.

After that we struggled as Bury threw everything at us. One long-range shot cannoned off the bar and former Liverpool Striker Jon Newby was causing us problems with his pace up front but some good handling by Chris Day kept us in it. The Rangers fans were right behind the team and the long chant of Holloways Blue and White Army had everyone out of their seats and urging the team forward.

Holloway then came down from the director's box whilst a Bury player received treatment and seemed to give Wardley and Thomson a real bollocking on the touchline, as things were certainly not going to plan. Almost immediately Rangers began to take a grip on the game especially in midfield where Bonnot and Bignot began to run the game. We worked some excellent stuff on the right as Bignot, Perry and Forbes seems to work little triangle together and then spread the play wide to Connolly and Bruce who had loads of space.

One Bruce cross was wing in brilliantly but no Rangers player could get a head on the ball. It was much better though and Connolly was very unlucky not to get us back level. He picked the ball up on the left and whilst many shouted for him to pass he cut inside and unleashed a superb curling effort, which was only inches wide. We were on top but needed a goal and this new Rangers side produced one. More great movement off the ball by Thomson saw him put clean through and the goalkeeper brought him down for a penalty.

A yellow card for the keeper but it is so frustrating to see these inconsistencies in decisions. Don't get me wrong a penalty was enough punishment really but watching the Premiership highlights last night you saw Middlesbrough have a player sent off for being the last man in giving away a penalty so why was the Bury keeper allowed to stay on the field. It could be argued that Thomson was going away from goal but he seemed to be trying to take it around the keeper but we got a penalty so enough moaning.

Rangers fans ran behind the goal and got ready to celebrate and Thommo didn't disappoint with a very well taken penalty. We all went mad with delight signing the pig bag song (now being sung by Arsenal fans six years after we started it) and we looked a good bet to get as second. We kept the pressure on Bury and almost grabbed a second when a corner was taken by Perry and Steve Palmer had an effort cleared off the line and then Wardley somehow managed to slice the ball wide but the ref blew for a foul anyway.

Half time and Rangers fans were very happy with the teams performance and we looked like we would come out and get that important second goal but we got off to a quiet start to the second half. Bury came out and had another go at us and we seemed to allow them to much time in midfield just as we did at the start of the first half and they looked the more likely to score. Newby had one chance he blazed over and Reid also had a chance as we began to look very shaky.

Karl Connolly went off with what appeared to be an injury and on came Christer Warren to play on the left wing. After that the defence stood firm though as the midfield came back into the game and Bury's main threat became set pieces, which Day and the defence dealt with well. We still needed something up the other end though and the very hard working Wardley and Thomson continued to cause problems and we got a free kick just outside the area.

A mate of mine said to me we've been practicing this, we're score here but I just laughed saying my usual duck as Paul Bruce ran up but what a free kick. Bruce curled it into the top corner for a wonderful goal that if scored by David Beckham would be shown on the TV over and over again. Mind you this goal might be being shown all day on ITV digital but as no one can seem to get it I wouldn't know about that.

The Rangers fans found their voices again and we did all we could to cheer the team on to victory. It was going to be a long last half an hour though as Bury did look dangerous from free kicks and corners. Holloway made another change as Stuart Wardley went off to a standing ovation and on came Sammy Koejoe. We continued to do well in midfield with Bignot battling for every ball and Perry fighting hard on the right but it took a great last ditch tackle by Forbes and some very assured defending by Askar to keep us in front as Bury threw everything at us.

With time running out we made another change with Matthew Rose on to tighten up the midfield and the excellent Alex Bonnot went off. The game just seemed to go on forever and at ten to five the fourth official held up the board to say six minutes injury time. No idea where he got that from but it meant we had a nervous end to the game and a panic for me as I had to be back in Manchester to catch a train by five to six so the longer this idiot played the less chance I had of catching this train. Those six minutes seemed to last forever as balls were thrown into the box but the back four held on well and Chris Day was excellent in goal.

The final whistle was greeted with huge cheers and the players all came straight over to acknowledge the magnificent support. All the players looked delighted with the win and the clenched fist of Holloway said it all, this was a big win for us. To come to Bury on a wet day when they are full of confidence and to come away with three points is an excellent result.

Bury looked a decent side much better than I thought they would be and they will cause plenty of sides problems this season. So I have finally seen us win away since that rainy day back in January 2000 at Swindon but of course you can't have everything as my train journey ended up being a journey from hell as the train ran out of beer and went back to Manchester before arriving at Birmingham an hour late missing our connecting train. A cab home from Birmingham meant we didn't get home till half eleven and despite the back ache from that uncomfortable cab and the six and a half hour journey home it was all worth it for the memory of those celebrations at the end.

Man of the Match: Terrell Forbes

Players Ratings

1. Chris Day : Assured handling throughout and communicated with his defence all afternoon. He looked delighted when we got the second and was one of the calmest players on the pitch in the dying seconds. 8/10

17. Terrell Forbes : Forbes was always involved wanting the ball and linking up well with Perry and Bignot. He got stuck in and made some excellent tackles to keep us in the game. 9/10

3. Paul Bruce : Brilliant goal by Bruce but was poor defensively in the first half. I felt he improved after his goal and worked very hard on the left all game. 7/10

4. Steve Palmer : Played a real captains role at eh back organising everyone and encouraging players if they made mistakes. He obviously lacks pace and was caught out at time but he is vital to the team at the moment. 7/10

28. Aziz Ben Askar : Dominated in the air and showed some real flair at the back at times. One drag back in his own penalty area was heart stopping and he always wants to play his way out of trouble. A real star in the making. 8/10

2. Mark Perry : Same as last week for Perry as he worked so hard on the right to win the ball and used it very well. He always tried to keep possession but I think we could do with some more pace on the right. 8/10

11. Marcus Bignot : Fought for every ball and never gives up or stops running. My current favourite player he just gets better every week. 8/10

26. Alex Bonnot : Used the ball well in midfield keeping it simple and always wanting the ball to his feet. Also not afraid to get stuck in and he looks another excellent signing. 8/10

10.Karl Connolly : Almost scored a brilliant goal in the first half and seemed to get better as the half wore on. Didn't do much in the second half before he went off injured. 7/10

7. Stuart Wardley : Worked so hard up front and offered some height to win the ball for Thomson. He may not be the best player we have but he gives everything for the team whenever he plays and you can't ask anymore of him. 8/10

27. Andy Thomson : Not quite as good as the Stoke game but his movement is the best I've seen from a QPR forward since John Spencer. A very well taken penalty and he worked so hard for the team again up front. 8/10

Subs

12. Matthew Rose : Gave the ball away to often for my liking but won some important tackles and not really on for long enough to make a fair judgement, 6/10

15. Christer Warren : Wasn't really involved going forward but made a few good tackles in midfield 6/10

18. Sammy Koejoe : Another forward of limited ability but he did his best and linked up well with Thomson but came on when we were on the back foot so didn't have many chances to score. 6/10
