With Alex Bonnot leaving the
club on a free transfer in the week it was another changed side
for the visit of Blackpool. Thankfully Matthew Rose passed a fitness
test so it was a straight replacement but the best news was that
Andy Thomson was back on the bench after missing the last few
weeks with a back injury.
The first half started similar to
the Wigan game with us having a lot of possession at the back
but not doing a lot with it. Palmer and Rose were working really
hard in midfield to win the ball whilst Langley was creating space
on the right for Forbes to overlap.
Richard Pacquette started better than
he did against Wigan and had a few half chances as his pace got
him into some good positions but lacked the finishing touch. A
great pass through by Bignot sent Pacquette through but his shot
was blocked.
Our best chances fell to Gallen who
had two opportunities to put us in front. Gallen headed over from
a cross by Forbes whilst a free kick saw the ball fall to Gallen
unmarked eight yards out but his attempted volley went the wrong
side of the post.
Blackpool had a decent spell midway
through the half when we looked a bit nervous but for the second
game running Rhys Evans had very little to do in the Rangers goal.
We eventually took a deserved lead
just a few minutes before half time. Matthew Rose did very well
driving into the penalty area and his shot was amazingly cleared
off the line by the defender only for Kevin Gallen to convert
the rebound for his seventh goal of the season.
That goal brought the team to life
and we almost added a second before the break with another good
attacking involving Rose but the one goal lead was more then enough
to satisfy us.
The second half was a much better
half to watch. Rangers played a lot better and the goal seemed
to have spurned us on. The first twenty minutes of the half was
all Rangers as Gallen began to get more involved and Langley was
becoming the playmaker from wide on the right. We were looking
much the better side as Langley began show boating by nutmegging
one player with a great bit of skill and using drag backs to win
us a few corners.
It was great to watch and it only
seemed a matter of time before we scored. A number of corners
and crosses followed as we piled on the pressure. Gallen and Shittu
went close to scoring before the goal of the day and perhaps the
goal of the season.
The ball came out on the right wing
to Langley and as from 30 yards out he hit the most brilliant
volley into the corner of the net to send the Loft into a mixture
of shock and ecstacy. It was a brilliant goal and one which shows
how great a player Langley might become.
He doesn't score many but when he
does scored they tend to be goals that live long in the memory.
For those who weren't at the game the goal can only be compared
to one scored by Ray Wilkins against Liverpool in 1993 but this
one was struck from out wide whilst Wilkins was in the middle.
Langley celebration too was brilliant as the players went berserk
and Palmer just stood shaking his head is amazement. What a goal
that was.
The rest of the game was never going
to live up to that amazing moment. We saw the game out comfortably
with Leroy, Gallen and Rose all having chances to add to the score
but a two goal win and a clean sheet was more than we had all
hoped for the standing ovation for the team and in particular
Richard Langley was fully deserved.
Doudou came on fro the last twenty
minutes as Richard Pacquette began to struggle with his groin
but we didn't see any more goals. So four points from two tough
home games and now on to Cardiff where a win on Tuesday will put
us right back into the playoff race.
Man of the Match: Richard Langley
Players Ratings
33. Rhys Evans: Flapped at one cross
but apart from that didn't have much to do. 7/10
17. Terrell Forbes: Another solid
defensive display and he gets forward so well to support Langley.
7/10
11. Marcus Bignot: Defensively he
was superb in the first half and saved us with some good work
during our only uneasy spell. One pass forward to Pacquette was
brilliant and he is proving to be a very important player at the
moment. 8/10
28. Aziz Ben Askar: Cool as ever at
the back taking his time to pass his way out of trouble. 7/10
31. Danny Shittu: Back to his best
today with a solid display as Blackpool had no answer to his strength
and pace. It does seem though that as he is so strong you are
allowed to pull his shirt as much as you like without a free kick
being given. 7/10
4. Steve Palmer: Excellent in his
new midfield role and won the ball so often for us to get forward.
7/10
12. Matthew Rose: Gave the ball away
cheaply at times but his driving runs into the box made a big
difference today and hopefully he can keep this form up in the
coming weeks. 7/10
9. Richard Langley: Sublime skills
and an amazing goal, what more can you ask for? 8/10
14. Leroy Griffiths: After a quiet
first half he got better in the second half as we gave him the
ball a bit more. 7/10
18. Kevin Gallen: Was very subdued
in the first 20 mins or so but got better after that and took
his chance well to put us in front. 7/10
22. Richard Pacquette: He started
the game well but seemed to injure his groin and ended up being
out paced by Ian Marshall. Once again the stick he received from
some fans was very harsh. 6/10

29. Doudou: Came on, ran around a
lot and almost grabbed a goal after a good move but was knocked
off the ball by Rose. 6/10
