Walking to the game today it was
more a feeling of trepidation than the usual excitement. For the
first time in quite a while I was not looking forward to seeing
us play. I could just see it we get pushed back early then get
a few corners and hopes are raised but Wimbledon get a goal and
go on to win 3-0.
Usually when we face recently relegated
sides it is exciting but thinking back to previous games with
Wimbledon left me feeling pretty depressed before we kicked off.
The team line up hardly brought much excitement to me. I was hoping
to see Koejoe start but again we seemed to be a bit to defensive
and to see Morrow in for Rose was more than a little surprising
to me. (He must have been injured)
Anyway the game started and to my
shock it was pretty much how I thought it would go and much the
same as every home game so far. It was so boring that my words
can not describe the non event. Don't get me wrong, it was not
an awful display by Rangers. Clarke Carlisle was doing a good
job on John Hartson whilst Peter Crouch and Kiwomya were doing
OK up front.
Our main problem was again in midfield
where Wardley was having an terrible game. Every pass was wayward,
every tackle was missed and he was just awful. At least he kept
trying but how he stayed on was beyond me. Keith Rowland was not
fairing much better and was leaving Langley with far to much to
do and was being outplayed by the Wimbldeon midfield.
Wimbledon did not create many chances
but the movement of the forwards caused us problems and Hartson
in particular was always a problem. Hartson almost gave them the
lead when he Mark Perry cleared off the line after a series of
corners and a mistake by Harper saw the big Welshman go round
him but Morrow cleared as Hartson shot from a tight angle.
Jermaine Darlington was a threat
going forward and his run and shot was pushed away by the keeper
but most of the half was played with long balls being returned
with long clearances and it was pretty dull. Then a shocker. Gerry
makes a change before half time. I could not work out what was
going on here. Wardley was having a mare and for some reason it
was Rowland who came off. Koejoe came on and I couldn't see the
point for about five minutes until finally realised we had gone
3-4-3.
Just before the break we had a good
spell when Langleys shot was well saved and Koejoe headed over
from the corner. It looked better already but the midfield was
still being out run and at half time we made another change. Christer
Warren came on for Mark Perry and the switch to 3-4-3 was complete
and this did help us as we looked much better going forward.
Soon after we took the lead when
Chris Kiwomya did well on the left and put in an excellent cross
for Stuart Wardley to head straight past the keeper and send the
loft crazy. It was scored by by far the worst player on the pitch
but fair play to Wardley who kept going and deserved a goal after
what has been a very bad start to the season for him.
Wimbledon came back well and put
us under pressure straight away with Hartson having a tough battle
with Carlisle and it was the QPR man who was coming out on top.
It was not long before it was 2-0 and the relief was not just
for today but for the whole season as we finally began to play.
Langley did superbly well on the
left and his pin point cross found Crouch who appeared to miss
head it but it arrowed into the top corner. Crouch will be delighted
with the goal and he is settling in well and looks set to become
a cult figure in the same way Devon White become in the early
90's.
The one thing you can never do is
write off Wimbledon and they showed all their old spirit and came
back at us. A series of corners pushed us back and we seemed quite
happy to sit back and Wimbledon got a goal back which was coming.
A cross from the left found Hartson who headed against the bar
and Jason Euell tapped home. It was not looking good as we sat
back and Wimbledon threw everything at us but a combination of
good defending, blind luck and Richard Langley kept us in front.
Langley held the ball for us and
showed so much class as he was again our only midfield player.
Another smart turn by Langley saw he fouled and that gave us an
extra few seconds to play the ball into the corners and hold on
for a much welcome win.
To be honest the last fifteen minutes
are a blur.I spent most of it with my heart in my mouth worrying
that we would blow it and came away with the belief that if I
am not being bored to death by this team then they try and scare
me to death. We don't ever seem to be able to relax but I suppose
thats what makes us go back every week. It was not vintage Rangers
by any means but it was much improved and hopefully the confidence
gained in this win will be taken into the coming weeks and we
can turn this season around.
Man of the Match: Richard

PLAYERS RATINGS
13. Lee Harper : Did well with
crosses and made a couple of good saves. 6/10
22. Jermaine Darlington : I was
a bit disappointed with Jermaine. He was given more license to
go forward in the second half but seemed to run into trouble.
Still I think we will see the best of him if we stick with 3-4-3.
6/10
2. Tim Breacker : For an experienced
pro he is a joke. He tends to get in peoples way but did do better
in the second half. 6/10
4. Steve Morrow : A poor display,
made some good blocks and tackles late on but was at fault for
most of the Dons chances and left Breacker and Carlisle with a
lot of work to do. 6/10
18. Clarke Carlisle : Did a very
good job on Hartson and just gets better with every game. 8/10
24. Mark Perry : Struggled when
asked to get forward but did his defensive duties well. Should
be played in the back three instead of Breacker. 6/10
21. Richard Langley : Had no help
in midfield but I say that every week. He was still our best player.
8/10
16. Keith Rowland : Had a mare,
couldn't do anything right and looked out of his depth. 5/10
27. Stuart Wardley : Was having
a terrible game but scored a vital goal. The goal didn't do much
for his game as he was still poor after he scored. 6/10
26. Peter Crouch : Did very well
up front, held the ball up and won everything in the air. A huge
improvement and deserved his goal. 7/10
11. Chris Kiwomya : One of his best
games of the season mainly as he had more support up front. Got
into a ruck with the right back but looks back to his best. 7/10
Subs:
31. Sammy Koejoe : I've been impressed
with Sammy this season. He has done nothing spectacular yet but
looks to have some potential and deserves a run in the side. 6/10
19. Christer Warren : A good game
for Warren and he looks a good buy. 6/10
15. George Kulscar : Came on to
waste some time and didn't touch the ball.
