Due to injuries we made several
changes to the side that beat Crewe. Karl Ready, Ian Baraclough
and Gavin Peacock missed out whilst Christer Warren made his full
debut and Jermaine Darlington and Chris Plummer returned from
injury.
The system stayed the same with
mark Perry moving into midfield in a very defensive line up. The
game started in the same way as the Crewe match. Dull. West Brom
looked like a struggling side whilst Richard Langley (pictured
left) continued his good form in midfield. Rangers were looking
quite bright at times and Darlington went on a run past Clement
and delivered a curling cross that was well held by the keeper
but the forwards should have put more pressure on the keeper.
As usual our best attacks were coming
on the right through Darlington and Langley. Another Darlington
cross found Stuart Wardley who headed wide. Our first corner of
the game almost saw us concede. Christer Warren failed to track
Derek McInnes and the midfielder ran 60 yards before collecting
Jason Van Blerk's ball and forcing a good save from Lee Harper.
For once we actually looked reasonable
from throw ins. No don't get excited. We were not showing good
movement and a willingness to want the ball but Christer Warren
was able to reach one of the musical statues waiting in the penalty
box.
A goal soon followed. A corner from
the left by Warren was flicked n by Carlisle and Kiwomya tapped
home. At least this is what I have read happened. From my seat
in the ground I thought it had gone wide and it was Darlington
who missed it. The pause among the traveling support seemed to
suggest I wasn't alone in thinking this. It actually felt as if
the West Brom fans were turning towards us Saying "You've just
scored celebrate" but in reality it was only seconds before the
pig bag song was being sung and the silly dance was started.
At this point it looked good. Langley
was doing well in midfield and West Brom never looked that dangerous.
Time to settle down score another one and go home happy. Wrong!
As is typical of QPR we sat back. This allowed West Brom a bit
more confidence as the deeper we played the less support the forwards
got and the more isolated Langley become.
As the game wore on it was if we
were playing with a 6-1-2 formation as Wardley had totally gone
missing. This isn't a dig at perry who was doing a good job of
tracking Ruel Fox but at this point we needed to defend higher
up the pitch and look for another goal. Lee Hughes was beginning
to cause problems and twice he saw shots saved by harper are leaving
the Rangers defence in a daze. Hughes opened us up again putting
Bob Taylor in but he shot well wide. It looked like one of those
days for West Brom who were at least having a go compared to us.
Two minutes before half-time Morrow
cleared off the line in the middle of a goalmouth scramble as
we began to fear the worst and it did get worse. Paul Furlong
picked up a knock and on came Peter Crouch to much laughter from
both sets of supporters.
Cries of One Rodney Trotter started
up from the home fans and "Freak" everytime he touched the ball.
Rodn.. I mean Crouch had a great chance to shut everyone up right
on half time. Langley put him through and he was unmarked just
ten yards out. Here we go I though top corner and three points.
But Crouch, no sorry Rodney produced a pathetic side foot attempt
which was so poor you had to laugh along with the West Brom fans.
It is hard to describe how bad it was as the ball rolled away
in the opposite direction to where he was aiming. All funny stuff
at the time but the smiles were not so apparent after half time.
Rangers kicked off and Richard Langley
tried too run through he West brom defence on his own. This led
to him losing the ball and a break was on and we were in trouble.
Lee Hughes dribbled the ball into the area and after Fox's shot
was parried by Harper, Van Blerk had the simple task of shooting
into an unguarded goal. It was not looking good and we were struggling
to get a grip in midfield as Langley was doing two men's work
and despite doing it very well it wasn't enough.
The referee then came into this
own. Earlier in the game he was missed a two footed lunge at Christer
Warren and after Furlongs injury he was quite happy to see West
brom attack rather than throw the ball back. If they had scored
from the throw in we could have asked for the game to be replayed
or does that only work in high profile games?
Anyway the referee then finally
gave a free kick for another blatant foul on Langley. This time
Langley reacted to a very bad tackle and needed to be calmed down
by the ref. During this row the ref went card crazy booking Kiwomya
and a West Brom defender from pushing eachover but he couldn't
get the wall back ten yards.
Even the West Brom fans sang "You
don't know what your doing". He lost total control of the game
as some bad challenges flew in but saw very few of them.
Another late tackle on Langley
saw him reach for a card but he didn't know who did the foul and
put the card away. After 60 odd minutes of being kicked all over
the pitch, Langley reacted and hacked down a West Brom player.
The player was so badly injured he leaped to his feet waving an
imaginary card, remember that is supposed to be a booking according
to the new rules, and Langley was in the book.
As the game was getting even more
scrappy, West Brom looked more likely to score and had loads of
possession. But we still almost nicked it when Carlisle headed
wide when he should have scored. Finally the goal came and it
was deserved despite the ref being blind again. Lee Hughes clearly
tugged at Steve Morrow's shirt but play went go on and Hughes
took the ball into the area and his shot sneaked past Lee Harper
at the near post with the help of a deflection off Chris Plummer.
Morrow acted very unprofessionally here chasing the ref rather
than the forward and allowing Hughes the time and space to run
through and score.
Karl Connolly finally came on but
it was too late. Crouch then missed two sitters in the last few
minutes. The second from an excellent Warren cross (after good
work by Conolly) was harder to miss but he managed it. All in
all a poor performance and question marks over the lack of substitutions
were asked by supporters rather than how awful the ref was.
Man of the Match: Richard
Langley
PLAYERS RATINGS
13. Lee Harper : Not his best game.
Made a few good saves but his distribution was very poor. 6/10
22. Jermaine Darlington : Started
well causing problems on the right but faded as the game wore
on as we defended to deep. 6/10
19. Christer Warren : A decent debut.
Another who struggled as we defended deeper but produced some
good crosses towards the end. 6/10
4. Steve Morrow : Did very well
throughout but cost us the game with a stupid mistake. Why chase
the ref Steve? He was fouled but play to the whistle. 7/10
17. Chris Plummer : Was not fully
fit but defended well and didn't let us down. 7/10
18. Clarke Carlisle : Not his best
game but still did well and was unlucky not to score again. 7/10
24. Mark Perry : Worked hard tracking
Ruel Fox and did everything asked of him. 7/10
21. Richard Langley : He was the
midfield again today. Working so hard and showing signs of the
class player he is. 8/10
27. Stuart Wardley : Never in the
game and he needs to be dropped for his and the teams sake. 3/10
