On a day when many fans began to
lose faith in Ian Holloway, QPR produced the kind of performance
we have been crying out for all season. As Iain Dowie left the
club and rumours of Gerry Francis taking training seemed to be
confirmed by eye witnesses many Rangers fans can be forgiven for
thinking this was just another crap performance waiting to happen.
But finally we saw some changes.
Out went Miklsoko, Warren, Rose,
Wardley and Kulscar amd in came a 4-4-2 system. Lee Harper started
at last with Bara, Perry, Plummer and Ready in the back four.
Tony Scully and Paul Murray made their first starts of the season
in midfield alongside Peacock and Darlington. Ngonge and Crouch
continued up front.
Rangers started attacking the loft
straight away and Tony Scully cut inside on an excellent run and
his 25 yard shot was well saved. It was a sign of things to come
as QPR played good passing football and caused Watford problems.
It wasn't all one way traffic as
a careless Gavin Peacock backpass put Tommy Smith in but Lee Harper
did brilliantly to come and save what looked like a certain goal.
Ngonge and Crouch were causing so many problems up front. Crouch
was proving to be a handful for Darren Ward whilst Ngonge looked
impressive against his old club.
After my critisim of Crouch on Saturday
it was great to see him perform so well in the first half. His
distribution was better and was unlucky not to score. Darlington
was doing well on the left but as usual was getting no support
from midfield. It was very different on the right though where
Scully and Perry were combining very well together and the crosses
were much better for Crouch and Ngonge to attack.
Half time and it was very encouraging
but as my mate said at half time "I don't know what to think,
who knows how they'll play second half". Thats the problem with
QPR you never know which one will turn up and a few minutes into
the half it looked bad. Watford pressed forward and Lee Harper
made an excelent save from Smith.
At least we kept going another good
run by Scully saw his shot saved again. Then the breakthrough,
Crouch did well in the box and was brought down for a penalty.
My view wasn't the best for this so I can't say for sure if it
was a foul or not but the Watford players were furious. Anyway
Michel Ngonge picked up the ball but Gavin Peacock grabbed it
off him to take the penalty. I prayed Peacock would not put it
to the same side he always does but he did and the keeper made
an easy save. Amazingly then the ref blew up and let us re take
it. God Knows why the keeper didn't appear to do anything wrong
so it was very harsh. Ngonge stepped up this time to place a very
good penalty (the same side as Peacocks) into the net.
After that we had chances to kill
the game off. A superb Darlington run was ended with a cross but
Crouch was unlucky not to finish it off. Crouch then missed a
good chance after Ngonge's layoff but his shot was wasteful. Watford
looked average and the main threat came from Wooter again who
we gave far to much space to. One of his long range efforts was
well saved again by Harper. Sadly we couldn't hold on and a good
ball into the box was met by Nielson who headed past Harper. It
was a good goal but one we could have prevented.
The goal led to a spell of Watford
pressure and Harper was forced to make another save to deny Wooter
as we began to fall away. One disapointing moment was a bottle
of beer being thrown at Wooter after fans accused him of diving.
A quite awful tackle by Baraclough could have broken his leg but
at least he picked up the bottle and drank some beer. How long
though before police or so called security stop idiots throwign
things on the pitch. At a recent game I was told I could not take
the lid of my bottle of water to my seat. When I asked why they
told me I could throw it. The fact that they suspected I would
throw a lid but not the bottle sums up the mentallity of security
at QPR.
Back to the game and Scully was
looking tired but produced an superb shot from 30 yards and it
took a magnificent save to prevent a goal. Baraclough and Plummer
appeared to be struggling with knocks but it was Ngonge who came
off first. Chris Kiwomya came on and almost found himself with
a great chance but Watford cleared the danger well.
In the dying minutes it was all
Watford as they put in cross after cross and Moony, Smith and
Wooter all had half chances. It was backs to the walls and only
one team was going to win it now. Darlignton came off to be repalced
by Warren and then in injury time Plummer limped off and on came
Danny Maddix to an amazing reception which made the hairs on the
back of your neck stand up. Maddix helped clear the danger and
we hung on for a point we deserved and with a bit of luck would
have had all three.
All in all this was a much improved
performance and we can take heart from the way we played. Shame
we face the best side in the division next but nothing is impossible
and we must try and build on this at the weekend.
Players Ratings
13. Lee Harper : Great to see him
back and he did very well. Made some great saves and I am just
so happy to see him back. 8/10
24. Perry : Not bad defensivly
and tried to get forward in the first half but his head went down
like so many others in the second half. He can do so much better
than he did today. 5/10
3. Ian Baraclough : Much better
than Warren a good defender but he tended to drift into the middle
leaving Darlington to cope with the impressive Wooter. 7/10
5. Ready : Gave away a few to many
free kicks again and was lucky not be sent off for a terrible
tackle near the end but did well tonight. 7/10
17. Plummer : Much better than
he was on Saturday and gives everything for the cause 7/10
20. Tony Scully : Look tired towards
the end due to lack of matches but was a threat throughout and
looked desperate to impress. 8/10
22. Darlington : Much better further
up the field and caused far more problems second half. 7/10
8. Peacock : Gave away the ball
to much tonight and should have scored with two good chances.
6/10
7. Paul Murray : Worked hard and
used the ball well. After such a long layoff he looked very sharp
and was my Man of the match. 8/10
26. Crouch : Much better, faded
towards the end but that was more due to us playing far to deep
than what he was doing. 8/10
9.Michel Ngonge : Worked very hard
and was a constant threat. 7/10
Subs
Maddix : There's only one Danny
Maddix, great to see him back, I felt so proud to see him play
in a QPR shirt again. 10/10 :-)
Warren : He really is not very good
but didn't do much wrong when he came on 6/10
Kiwomya : Didn't do much but came
on at a time when we we playing so deep he could have little or
no impact. 6/10
