After drinking far to much on Easter Sunday I found myself in
a positive mood this morning. After reading in the Sun that we
could be relegated today that positive mood changed slightly into
a feeling of dread. Surely we can't go down today was my thought
so I was quite nervous flicking between the Blackburn v Huddersfield
game, the repeat of Smackdown and Flash Gordon the movie.
Thankfully the day had begun well,
Huddersfield lost 2-0, Flash Gordon saved the earth from Ming
and HHH lost the intercontintal title to Jeff Hardy so a good
start to the day. As I left home for Loftus Road the ITV movie
started and the Great Escape tune blasted out from the television.
I laughed to myself on the way out at how appropriate that was
considering this could be the start of our great escape.
Still I knew defeat or even a draw
would see us down so I was still pretty nervous upon arriving
at the ground. Just one change to the side which drew on Saturday,
Rose out injured so in came Darlington to right back with Bignot
going into midfield.
Both teams started quite nervously
with Tranmere looking dangerous with free kicks whilst we looked
good going down the right with Knight and Darlington. Our first
chance came from a free kick which Bruce hit just wide and Crouch
and Thomson were causing problems up front. Tranmere had a good
chance to score after the referee made the first of many bizarre
decisions.
A free kick was given against Knight
and despite taking it quickly the ref booked Knight for not going
back ten yards and moved the free kick ten yards forward. The
free kick was well saved by Harper but someone should have got
Crouch to stand in that wall to make it more difficult for them
to hit the target.
The goal we all wanted came after
about fifteen minutes, some good work wide ended with Peacock
putting a cross in, Crouch got a head on the ball and knocked
down for Thomson and he finished well for 1-0.
After
that we looked pretty good for ten minutes as we passed the ball
well and got ourselves in some good positions but didn't get that
crucial second goal. Tranmere continued to look dangerous from
set pieces but we held on until half time without any major problems
and not many would argue at this stage that we were watching two
very poor sides at Loftus Road.
Second half we started half asleep
as ever, a corner was whipped in and Allen should have done better
but headed over. The Rangers fans suddenly found their voices
with a prolonged Holloways Blue and White army and the Great Escape
tune bellowed out but we were starting to look nervy at the back.
We did look dangerous on the counter
attack though with the front two linking well together and the
pace of Knight a real threat to Tranmere. It was at this stage
that the referee and linesman seemed to lose the plot giving some
of the most outrageous offside decisions I have seen in a long
time and the game became very stop start as he blew for everything.
One offside he gave was quite unbelievable
as Thomson put Knight in and he scored but who he gave offside
was a mystery but it meant we still had a lot to do. We started
to show some more belief as Tranmere looked very poor defensively
and soon Crouch was put clean through only to be brought down
by the last man. No red card was shown although it should have
been and the free kick was wasted.
It was much better though Crouch
found himself through again but this time was onside and had nooone
close enough to kick him, Rodders composed himself and finished
very well to send us into ecstasy and a certain three points.
It should have been more as Crouch won a header fair and square
and nodded onto Thomson who scored but that was given as a foul
although the keeper was nowhere near it so how Crouch fouled him
is again a strange decision.
The ref and linesman continued to
make some crazy decisions and why this man is allowed to ref at
this level of football is a disgrace, he should be sent down to
non league for performances like this as he was truly awful for
both sides. Tranmere did have a few chances to get back in the
game as we went to sleep at corners giving them free headers and
one goal conceded at this stage would have probably seen us collapse.
Thankfully we stayed solid and held
on without too many more problems to give Ian Holloway his first
win as manager and give us a chance of surviving on a day when
we could have been relegated. Life is certainly not dull being
a QPR fan this season.
Players Ratings
Harper: A pretty good game from
Lee, his kicking was a lot better and he made some good saves
7/10
Darlington: His best game for a
while, improved as the game wore on and linked well with Knight.
7/10
Baraclough: Always making himself
available for a quick throw out and defended well. He also got
forward well and covered for the centre half's when ever he was
needed. 8/10
Ready: Not a great game for Ready,
he made a few mistakes but was up against a very physical Tranmere
attack and dealt with that well. 6/10
Plummer: Some excellent tackles
from Plummer and he has been one of the few success stories of
an otherwise disappointing season. 7/10
Knight: A real threat today and
played his best game so far. A real shame he couldn't get the
goal he deserved. 8/10
Bignot: Excellent in midfield, worked
so hard and never gives in. He is the kind of player opposition
fans hate and he really gets stuck in and has so much ability
he is a brilliant signing. 8/10
Peacock: Very frustrating, he gave
the ball away a lot but did give his all in midfield and did sit
back a bit in the second half to allow Knight and Bignot to get
forward. 7/10
Bruce: I don't want to be harsh
on Bruce as he was getting loads of stick again today. He had
an OK game and in all fairness to Holloway he has noone else better
equipped to fill this role and Bruce is giving it his best shot.
6/10
Crouch: He caused Tranmere a lot
of problems and linked well with Thomson. He took his goal very
well and will have impressed the watching scouts. 8/10 T
homson: Worked very hard and as
I said before linked well with Crouch. Another real bargain from
Holloway and without his goals we'd be down by now. 8/10
Subs
Ngonge: Not on for long 6/10
