The last home game of the season and a chance to get last weeks
relegation out of our system and bring in some youngsters. With
no pressure on the team we should be able to perform and show
enough pride to give us hope.
Well that was the plan but it all
worked out very different. For the first time this season I was
not bothered about a QPR game, couldn't care whether we won or
last the game just wanted to see some signs of hope.
Holloway made a few changes, in
came Wardley, Pacquette and Christer Warren for Crouch, Ready
and Peacock. We started OK looking to attack Stockport but the
game soon filtered out into a pathetic display.
Normally I'd run through the action
but not this time as I can't recall anything other then the sending
off in a very boring first half. The red card came after an off
the ball tackle on Pacquette and it looked no more than a yellow
card offence in truth but we had the advantage in terms of players
on the field but it made no difference.
For the first in about three years
I left my seat before half time. I was bored and fed up of watching
this rubbish, I watched the final few minutes in the Lower Loft
bar. It sums up how bad we were that I had no real enthusasium
to rush back and that meant as I finished my pint Soccer Saturdays
informed us we were 1-0 down. Oh Bugger, no idea what the goal
was like but I won't be like most Sunday morning newspapers and
pretend to see things I didn't.
Second half with us 1-0 down we
decided to sit in the lower loft for the first time this season.
No atmosphere at all although it wasn't exactly anything to get
excited about and before we knew it we were 2-0 down after a free
kick on the right was easily turned in past Harper.
Stockport
wanted this badly and we couldn't give a toss which was a very
sad thing to see. Holloway then made three changes bringing on
youngsters Terry Mcflynn, Ben Walshe and Justin Cochrane.
All three of them tried hard but
Cochrane was soon sent off for a late challenge which should have
been no more than a yellow. In this case refs must use a bit of
common sense, the kid was sixteen minutes into his debut and we
were 2-0 down and relegated. Did he really need to show a red
card in a match that at this stage meant nothing. Palace losing
meant that even if we had come back to win Stockport were safe
but no a youngsters debut was ruined.
Still time for a third goal as
a penalty was given and Harper was sent the wrong way. The only
effort on goal I can remember was saved on the line by the keeper
from Thomson I think. As the game died out into an easy away win
I remembered some of the great days I've had at Loftus Road, seeing
Gary Bannisters hat trick against Chelsea in the 6-0 win, the
skills of Simon Stainrod, the Paul Parker years where we looked
like we could defend, Sir Les and all those goals, the terracing
the beating of Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and all the top teams
we are now light years away from and the realisation that those
days were over hit me hard.
After the game the fans went onto
the pitch to goad the Stockport fans on for a fight by the looks
of it. All silly stuff but the majority seemed to be kids dancing
and having a laugh and the police brought on the horses again
as Goldrange made sure they stopped the small children as six
foot skinheads were allowed to run past. Same every season isn't
it!
Anyway the players came back on
for a lap of shame. I gave Peacock the thumbs up like I was in
Gladiator (I did feel a fool doing that) and he smiled back at
me and seemed to aim a clap my way as for the rest of them, well
five people came out of that with all the credit in the world
in my book.
Peter Crouch, Marcus Bignot, Mark
Perry and Richard Langley all went over to talk to supporters
and sign autographs. I don't know what they said as they went
to the Ellerslie Road stand and then Paddock but I really felt
for these five in the same way I felt for Sinclair, Brevett, Dichio
and Gallen when we went down five years ago. The rest couldn't
get back down the tunnel quick enough which was sad to see but
one idiot who ran on the pitch and seemed to want to attack a
player probably had a lot to do with that.
But the biggest shock for me was
Ian Holloway. A man who I never wanted as QPR manager showed what
a man he is. I left the ground at half five and he was still shaking
hands with people and signing autographs. I ca';t think of another
QPR manager during my lifetime who has done that. Thats not to
have a pop at any of them from Venables to Francis but It was
just great to see a manager face the fans after such a shocking
season.
Players Ratings
13. Lee Harper : Not much chance
with the goals and I hope he stays 6/10
24. Perry : Kept trying till the
end but had a poor game 5/10
3. Ian Baraclough : Pretty shocking
display from Bara who was awful 4/10
19. Christer Warren: No idea how
he is still involved with the team, quite what Gerry Francis saw
in him is a mystery to me. 5/10
17. Plummer : His worse game for
quite a while after a decent season. 5/10
14. Leon Knight : Tried some nice
skills and looks a good player, shame we won't see him again.
6/10

the game, tried to get forward but was pretty poor. 5/10
27. Stuart Wardley : Same as ever,
tries hard but was very poor. 5/10
23. Marcus Bignot : went off injured,
the one bright point of a terrible team. 6/10
38. Richard Pacquette : Not easy
for a forward to make his debut in a team which creatd just once
chance all game. Will improve with a run in the reserves. 6/10
36. Andy Thomson : never a threat
really and had a disapointign game. 5/10
Subs
Terry Mcflynn : Always wanted the
ball and gave it his best shot, probably the best of the youngsters
on show. 6/10
Justin Cochrane : On for 16 minutes
and got sent off for a late tackle. Hard to judge him in such
a short space of time. 6/10
Ben Walshe : Another who needs more
games in the reserves before stepping up. 6/10
