After
the disasters of Wednesday night Gerry made some changes to the
line up. Stuart Wardley returned from the flu and with Rowland
made his first start of the season. Sammy Koejoe continued up
front alongside Kiwomya.
The support was better than wednesday
but you could feel the fear in the air as we started slowly. Preston
looked sharp early on and Jon Makken was causing us problems and
Lee Harper did well saving from two efforts as the signs looked
ominous. But we responded well and worked hard in midfield with
a good combination of neat and tidy Rowland and the wonderful
skill of Langley helping us to keep the ball better than we have
done since the Palace game.
It was from set pieces where we
looked dangerous. Despite my comment to my girlfriend that we
never score from corners we twice went pretty close. On each occasion
it was Stuart Wardley on the end of it but he couldn't find the
net.
Preston had three good chances in
the first half. Firstly Michael Appleton caught Richard Langley
in possession and saw his shot saved before Paul McKenna's 25-yarder
was again saved by Harper. Harper was called upon again when Steve
Basham was sent racing into the penalty area by Jon Macken's threaded
pass and should have scored, although Harper had to react quickly
to get down to his left and make the save.
Rangers' looked vulnerable again
and it wasn't helped when Chris Plummer limped off injured and
was replaced by Morrow. Jon Macken was playing well and was unlucky
in the 41st minute when his delicate chip beat Harper but went
just over. At half time it looked like a draw was on the cards
and we didn't start the second half that well.
Preston captain Sean Gregan fired
over at the far post after substitute Lee Cartright's corner wasn't
cleared. Kiwomya was lucky to stay on the pitch after he appeared
to punch a Preston defender off the ball. He was booked and revenge
was taken soon after with a high kick on Kiwomyas back. That seemed
to wake us up and some good support from the Loft woke the team
up.
A good break saw Wardley blast straight
at Lucas and Lucas recovered to block Kiwomya's follow-up and
after the ball came back to Kiwomya, his scuffed shot wide of
the post. We were now on top and Lucas pulled off another good
save from Wardley, who rose to head Richard Langley's free-kick.
It was a clever set piece which Carlisle, Koejoe and Kiwomya did
well with as they attracted the defence away from Wardley. Lucas
denied him yet again when Langley tricked his way past the defence
showing why he is so good and pulled the ball back for an unmarked
Wardley whose shot was palmed away by Lucas. It seemed only a
matter of time before we scored but we couldn't break through
and Preston batteld very well to dig out a result.
Peter Crouch replaced Koejoe and
headed Langley's corner towards Kiwomya, whose header looped over.
In the closing minutes McKenna fired a free-kick inches wide and
blasted over from close range after good work by Mark Rankine
but a draw was a good result for Preston.
A lot of improvement was made by
QPR and if we can take some of our chances then we can start moving
up the table.
Man of the Match: Richard
Langley
PLAYERS RATINGS
13. Lee Harper : Made some good
saves and claimed his crosses with confidence. 7/10
22. Jermaine Darlington : Got forward
but couldn't deliver a killer cross or pass but did ok. 6/10
24. Mark Perry : Did well defensively
and passed the ball well. 7/10
17. Chris Plummer : What you see
is what you get with Plummer an he did OK again today. 6/10
12. Matthew Rose : Much better from
Matthew. Still not match fit but he was a lot better today. 7/10
18. Clarke Carlisle : A giant at
the back and deserved to shove the taunts from the Preston fans
down their throats. 7/10
16. Keith Rowland : Did well. Kept
the ball moving in midfield and let Langley do the flash stuff.
7/10
21. Richard Langley : Got caught
in possession a few times but he was excellent again and one piece
of skill where he turned full circle past two players before being
outnumbered was breathtaking. 8/10
27. Stuart Wardley : Much better
from Stuart. Worked hard in midfield. Still looks lost at times
but when he tries his best and gets himself in the box he is always
a threat. With some luck he would have had a hat trick today.
7/10
31. Sammy Koejoe : I thought he
did well, looked strong and showed potential. Worth a run in the
side. 7/10
11. Chris Kiwomya : Came to life
after a fight but missed a sitter. 6/10
Subs:
28. Peter Crouch : Better from Crouch
but still not up to this level of football and need a run in the
reserves before he is booed out of the stadium. 6/10
4. Steve Morrow : Did OK, and helped
tighten us up after half time. 6/10
