A full house at Loftus road and the atmosphere was buzzing before
kick off. Queues to get in lots of singing this really was all
set up for a special night. In the build up to the game Gerry
described this as our "cup final" and the crowd responded to with
a cup final atmosphere. Sadly the players must have watched the
Milk Cup Final of 1986 and were fucking useless. I don't say that
lightly and apologise for swearing but from minute one we were
as bad as we were at Luton and in many ways much worse.
Straight from kick off they attacked
us and as we stood off them we watched as they passed through
us and a Luton player hit a shot in off the post for 1-0. 40 seconds
gone and the mood had changed. The atmosphere died from the home
end and the team were clueless. Just as I said in my preview to
the match Luton countered our one tactic by closing down the wing
backs and we just couldn't get out of own half more due to zero
movement up front and a midfield that lacked the hunger to want
the ball.
We managed our first shot on 43
minutes and that was well wide. It was rubbish and the fact that
Luton didn't have to do much to win easily was frightening. Matthew
Rose sat in midfield and proved to all those who want him in that
position that he can't do it. He was rubbish and looked totally
unfit until Gerry made a brave change. It's one he'll get no credit
for but Kiwomya came on for Plummer after less than half an hour.
Kiwomya didn't do much for the rest of the half with no service
for him or Crouch/Koejoe but at least Rose looked more comfortable
as sweeper.
Half time came and not as many
boos at at Luton last week but the feeling was just as angry.
In the bar I was devastated at how bad we were playing and said
to two mates (who were very bored) that we are so shit we will
score in the last minute and therefore have to suffer another
half hour of this shit. I didn't expect to be proved right.
At
least we showed some fight second half. Luton were looking to
hold on to what they had which I found surprising as they looked
dangerous everytime they went forward and if they had gone for
it they would have got at least one more goal. Still we at least
created a few chances in this half. Kiwomya chipped over the bar
when clean through and also shot straight at the keeper when he
should have done better.
We threw everything at them as Langley
began to have a bigger influence in midfield but Darlington was
awful on the right and his crossing was even worse than normal.
Baraclough was lucky not to be sent off for elbowing Mark Stein
but only got a yellow. The game looked over and Ngonge was now
on as we had 5 up front. Game Over?
Well the cries of "What a load of
rubbish " and the people leaving would bring you to that conclusion
but we managed to nick a goal we didn't deserve. Langley appeared
to knee a Luton player in the head but the ref waved play on,
Baras ball into the box created a scramble which fell to Kiwomya
and the next thing we knew the ground erupted. An equaliSer against
Luton Town has not been celebrated so wildly since, well last
week but it felt good to grab a draw from the jaws of defeat.
Luton players went mad as it shouldn't
have been allowed but the amount of time wasting they did and
play acting it was poetic Justice I think. We still almost cocked
it up as Spring hit a screamer just over before the ref blew the
whistle. Extra time saw one change as Koejoe was replaced by Wardley.
We were all over them in the first
half of extra time as Crouch had the ball robbed from him with
the goal gaping before Kiwomya was put through and brought down
by the keeper. PENALTY! Despite being the last man the number
of coins being thrown at the ref seemed to make him bottle the
decision and offer a yellow instead of the red it should have
been for the keeper. Langley stepped up to take it which took
some bottle and he sent the keeper the wrong way but hit the bar.
From the rebound the keeper made a good save from Langley. A
s is usual of the fickle QPR crowd
we booed and gave abuse to Langers but did anyone have confidence
in Kiwomya scoring after is last two penalties? Langleys head
went down and after getting no support from the bench (only Mark
Perry appeared to pat him on the back) he did not feature to much
in the rest of the half. Only one side looked like scoring and
it was us but not through any quality just long balls causing
problems.
Another long ball in saw it fall
to Kiwomya who took his chance well to send us crazy and dreaming
of Arsenal. Luton pushed on at us but full credit to Langley and
Crouch who held the ball up for us on the right and ran the clock
down. The crowd celebrated as if we'd won the cup singing"Bring
on the Arsenal" just 30 minutes after calling every player, the
manager and chairmen a not very capable individual or words to
that effect. We didn't deserve it but we won and god help us against
Arsenal.
Man of the Match: Chris
Kiwomya
