Rangers started the game with some good news for the supporters.
Matthew Rose was back from injury and Paul Murray was back on
the bench so the injury crisis was finally coming to an end. Rangers
had an almost full side out with only Chris Kiwomya and Ian Baraclough
missing from most peoples first eleven.
Rangers stated brightly showing
lots of passion and commitment and as we tried to get a vital
early goal. The crowd was behind the team but Burnley were well
organized and apart from one effort by Wardley we couldn't finish
off any of our good work.
Burnley then settled down and carved
open some opportunities for themselves. Lee Harper made two good
saves as Burnley began to get on top. Most of the first half though
was a bore as we looked for the long ball to Crouch but the experienced
Mitchell Thomas was dealing with everything easily and we seemed
to have very little idea of how to create a chance. We then pushed
hard for a goal and the last fifteen minutes of the half were
a little better.
We got a few crosses into the box
and won a few corners but we lacked imagination in the final third
of the field and the match looked all set up for a 0-0. We needed
to make some changes, not so much to the players but the formation.
Burnley were defending quite deep
and we were not getting many players into the box. We should have
looked to push Wardley in as a third striker especially as he
was having no impact in the midfield. But things stayed the same
and Burnley always looked dangerous on the break.
Once
again we started the second half well with Wardley having a shot
blocked but the resulting corner was easily cleared. We were on
top but creating every little and Burnley sensed we were there
for the taking.
John Mullins was brought on and
they began to push forward. A mess up in midfield saw Mullins
received the ball with is back to goal around 30 yards out. He
turned and ran through our defence with not one player tracking
his run. Mulins in loads of space hit his shot straight at Harper
but Lee let the ball go through his hands and into the net. Disaster
for Rangers but it had been coming.
Then we saw a shock change. Stuart
Wardley somehow stayed on whilst Langley and Perry were taken
off. The home end booed the substitution and neither player looked
happy with the decision. Paul Murray and Sammy Koejoe came on
and Koejoe had an immediate impact going on a run but his shot
was off target.
Murray was hardly seen in the time
he had as Burnley looked well in control. Lee Harper made some
more good saves whilst Clarke Carlisle helped keep the scoreline
down to just one. Jermanine Darlington was given the freedom of
the right wing for the last ten minutes but failed to produce
anything other than a throw in and our one chance came for Koejoe
who should have done better but went to wide and missed the target.
Burnley were full value for the
win and should have won by more and we are now left in huge trouble
at the bottom of the table with the pre season optimism now dead
and the harsh reality of another relegation battle is upon us.
Man of the Match: Clarke
Carlisle
PLAYER RATINGS
13. Lee Harper : Made some good
saves to keep us in the game but was at fault for the goal and
needs to talk to his defenders more. 6/10
22. Jermaine Darlington : Pathetic.
Had so many chances to beta his manor get crosses in but just
didn't do it. Jermaine is a good player and many say he should
play as a winger but unless his crossing improves he is not going
to make it as a winger at this level. 5/10
19. Christer Warren : A pretty ordinary
game. He got himself into good positions in the first half overlapping
but with very little help from his teammates he was forced to
just thump crosses in to Crouch. 6/10
18. Clarke Carlisle : Our best
player by miles. Defended well, tried to get forward and was the
one bright spot on a gloomy day. 7/10
24 Mark Perry :Played in his best
position and did OK but he can do so much better and he needs
to produce soon before Baraclough and Ready return and he is sent
back to the reserves after his recent performances. 6/10
12. Matthew Rose : Started well
playing his way out of defence and doing well but the more we
played long ball the less influence he was having. 6/10
21. Richard Langley : when he was
given the ball on the floor he looked class. One curling pass
was a joy to watch but it saw most QPR fans shout out "What the
fuck was that" before they realised it was perfectly placed for
the wing back to run onto. Amazingly when the pass paid off the
same supporters weren't to loud in praise for Richard. He wasn't
at his best though but he needs to see more movement around him
to get the best out of Langley and until this happens he will
be the scapegoat behind Wardley. 7/10
27. Stuart Wardley : I am starting
to feel sorry for him. He needs to be dropped as he is hopeless
this season. 5/10
8. Gavin Peacock : A disappointing
display from Gavin. Like Langley he needs to see more movement
to give him options when he has the ball but he is a much better
player than he showed today. 6/10
26. Peter Crouch : Tried hard but
was poor today and would have got a lot more stick if Wardley
wasn't playing. Still he has improved in the last few weeks which
is good to see. 6/10
10. Karl Connolly : Showed some
nice touches but he never looked like scoring and was given little
to no service. 6/10
Subs:
7. Paul Murray : Not really in
the game but got booked 6/10
31. Sammy Koejoe : Looked a threat
but had no service. 6/10
