The FA Cup can make dreams come true and is one of the few competitions
which can see giant killings. Sadly the chances of an upset were
not good at Loftus Road as we ended up humiliated in this derby
game. Before the game the signs were good, we have the ingredients
of ex Arsenal players ready to make headlines but in front of
a full house it was all a huge disappointment.
It all started quite well. The fans
were behind the team and Arsenal looked very ordinary at times.
During those first twenty minutes we worked hard passed the ball
and put Arsenal under lots of pressure. Arsenal were not playing
particularly well and looked a little nervous with some wayward
passing and the finishing of Bergkamp and Wiltord was wasteful.
Against top teams you need to take
your chances and this is something we didn't do. Firstly Langley
hit a good shot but Seamen saved well down to his left before
Peter Crouch somehow managed to shoot wide from five yards when
he should have scored. Then from a corner the game saw a huge
turning point. Crouch's header was cleared off the line by Ashley
Cole and as Rangers players protested Arsenal built a counter
attack.
Lee Dixon went down the right and
his low cross was a good one but we seemed in no danger. Plummer
needed a shout from his teammates but didn't get one so threw
a leg out to clear for a corner but instead turned it into his
own net. Plummer looked devastated by his goalkeeper should have
helped him more in that situation.
Arsenal then went for the kill and
within a minute they broke again and Bergkamp went round Miklosko
and crossed for Wiltord whose shot was deflected off Baraclough
past Ludo. The defending was awful and sides like Arsenal don't
need us to hand them two goals starts. Heads appeared to drop
as Arsenal played out the rest of the half with ease and the majority
of us supporters were to disappointed to even speak.
Half
time and the game was all over but Gerry made a bold change. He
took off Plummer and Perry and brought on Koejoe and Connolly.
The midfield seemed to need some extra bodies but instead we went
all out attack and Arsenal couldn't believe their luck. With less
men in midfield and defence they picked us apart and destroyed
us on the wings as our narrow long ball game was exposed by one
of the best sides on Europe.
Ashley Cole ran down the left without
a challenge and his cross was turned into his own net by Matthew
Rose. Rangers had fallen apart by this stage and the gamble made
by Francis looked a very naive one and not one you'd expect from
an experienced manager.
Perhaps this was just another example
of Gerry losing the plot. His game plan in recent weeks has been
to thrown on as many forwards as possible if we are losing or
bring on loads of defenders if we are winning and it is these
Sunday morning tactics that he expected would beat Arsenal. Arsenal
could have brought on their youth team and still won by more and
thank God Wenger took pity on us by not bringing Terry Henry on
as the score would have hit double figures.
As it was Sylvan Wiltord grew in
confidence and hit an excellent fourth. A corner was swung in
and Wiltord found himself unmarked and he volleyed home in off
the post. Everytime they came forward they looked dangerous and
our defence was all over the place. Ludek Milkosko kept the score
down with some good saves but Pires and Berkamp added two more
goals and we finished losing 6-0.
The only positive to come out of
the day was the superb support we gave the club which they just
don't deserve. The Q Block was in fine voice as was the entire
Loft as we sang "4-3 we're gonna beat you 4-3" until the fourth
went in and the numbers went up. David Seamen got the usual abuse
but took it well and laughed along to "Seamen get your hair cut"
and turned to acknowledge our support at the final whistle, something
not many of our own players could be bothered to do.
Despite seeing their side win so
easily, the Arsenal fans were silent throughout and the song "6-0
and you still don't sing" still didn't bring anything from the
away end. Now I know we are rubbish but I have never seen a side
win 6-0 away from home and be greeted by almost silence from the
away end. Still it matters not who sang the loudest and on the
pitch we were second best to a side who barely got out of fourth
gear yet if we had perhaps gone into this game with a game plan
to stop Arsenal rather than a lets give it our best shot attitude,
we may have seen a different story.
PLAYERS RATINGS
1. Ludo : At fault for the second
goal but made some crucial saves to keep the score down. 6/10
22. Darlo : Only got forward twice
as he was left struggling against Cole and Pires. When he did
get forward he looked a threat. 6/10
3. Bara : Did his best but was
lucky not to be sent off for a terrible tackle on Lauren. 6/10
18. Carlisle : Did well early on
but seemed to lose all his confidence as Wiltord and Bergkamp
began to cause us far to many problems. 6/10
17. Plummer : I felt very sorry
for him but after the own goal his head went down. 5/10
12. Rose : Made some excellent tackles
in the first half and had a decent game but looked very poor second
half as he had to play in a back four. 6/10
24. Mark Perry : Looked totally
out of his depth in midfield and didn't seem to know what his
job was in the first half. 5/10
21. Langley : Richard had a mare.
He didn't deserve all the stick he was getting but Viera made
him look like a mug at times but you'd expect a world class midfield
player to do that to a first division player. I hope he comes
out of this stronger and he must have learnt a lot from playing
against such a good player. 5/10
8. Gavin Peacock : Ran around a
lot but looked like an ageing pro which is what he is. 5/10
28. Crouch : Poor old Crouchy.
He was like a little boy lost against Adams. He gave the ball
away and his lack of movement made us all to predictable. 5/10
11. Kiwomya : His movement caused
them problems early on but he may as well have gone home second
half as we created even less chances than usual. 5/10
Subs
31. Koejoe : Was asked to play
wide and spent the second half chasing shadows and was taken off.
5/10
10. Connolly : Didn't really notice
him, was looked unfit and out of his depth. 5/10
9. Michel Ngonge : Not on for long
and would be a bit harsh to judge him as anyone coming on when
we're 6-0 down would struggle.
