Rangers
face soon to be promoted West Brom on Sunday for our last game of
the season.
It's a sell out at Loftus Road for what promises to be an interesting
afternoon.
West Brom go into the game knowing a
point will take them up but in reality their goal difference is
so much better than Hull it is going to take a thirteen goal swing
in Hull's favour for West Brom to blow it which is why they celebrated
promotion at the Hawthorns on Monday night.
A win at Loftus Road and they will claim
the title which would be deserved for them but Rangers will be looking
to make sure that doesn't happen in what will be a good test for
Luigi De Canio's men.
Rangers will be looking for revenge
after being humiliated up at the Hawthorns earlier this season.
West Brom ran out 5-1 winners in the Sunday lunchtime game which
was shown on Sky Sports.
That result and performance saw the
end of a laughing John Gregory's reign in charge and also saw the
end of the abysmal John Curtis who made me look quick. Of course
very few of the team that played that day will be in the squad on
Saturday, I think only Camp, Ephraim and Blackstock are likely to
start from the team that played that day.
QPR
fans have been urged to get to the ground early with the rumour
mill going into overdrive over what the announcement is going to
be. Rumours vary from the announcement of a new badge, a new kit,
a new mascot or Figo has signed.
I'd love to shed some light on this
but sadly I'm as in the dark as everyone else at the moment. The
smart money though would be on the new badge being revealed.
What we do know though is that former
players such as Gerry Francis, Stan Bowles, Les Ferdinand and Paul
Parker will be on the pitch before the game for some form of presentation.
The Under 18 team may also be handed
their trophy for winning the league at some stage on Sunday as well.
So it might be worth leaving the pub a little earlier than usual
to see what all the fuss is about.
Onto the game now and Rangers will have
a few injury and suspension problems ahead of t he game.
Lee Camp is likely to start in goal
which will complete an ever present season for him. Camp has come
in for a little criticism in recent months but some fans seem to
have a short memory. It was a year ago when most fans were desperate
to see us sign Camp and his form this season justified the efforts
of John Gregory to sign him.
Camp must be a contender for player
of the season this year and without him especially in the first
half of the season we'd be in real trouble at the bottom of the
table rather than putting up feet up and relaxing.
Camp will face competition for his place
next year with the expected arrival of Radek Cerny on a free transfer
from Tottenham. Thirty Four year old Cerny has been pushing to be
the Spurs number one this season and played in the clubs Carling
Cup Semi Final win over Arsenal but has been told he can leave in
the summer. Cerny's arrival will mean an end to Jake Cole and Matt
Pickens stay at Loftus Road and will probably mean that Lee Camp
will be under huge pressure to perform and keep the number one shirt.
The
Rangers back four has few problems. Damion Stewart is out through
suspension whilst Fitz Hall faces a fitness test before being cleared
to play. If Hall doesn't make it then we could see Zesh Rehmann
in a QPR shirt for the last time. Rehmann has been told he won't
be offered a new deal and can leave the club in the summer along
with Chris Barker.
These two players probably produced
their worst QPR performance earlier in the season at West Brom so
I think Kevin Phillips and co will be quite happy if Rehmann is
picked to start. In fairness to old Zesh though he has improved
this season and did very little wrong t Norwich last week.
Michael Mancienne will play his last game for QPR
as his loan spell ends after the game and he is unlikely to return
next season with Chelsea keen on keeping hold of him.
Rangers are looking to strengthen in defence ahead
of next season and if rumours are to be believed we are very close
to signing Peter Ramage from Newcastle as a replacement for Mancienne
at right back. A lot depends on the playoffs but if Watford fail
to go up Rangers are also keen on bringing Dan Shittu back to the
club whilst a loan deal to bring in Martin Cranie has apparently
already been agreed which would give us a far stronger back four
next season.
The other transfer rumours are that Rangers will
move to sign Lee Cook on a season long loan before buying him back
in the summer of 2009 and Rangers are also hoping to sign Jason
Roberts from Blackburn to lead the attack next season.
West
Brom are known as one of if not the best footballing side in the
division so I think De Canio may counter this by going with a 4-4-1-1
formation especially as it seems unlikely that Patrick Agyemang
will be fit enough to start the game. This would certainly help
us get a grip of the game in midfield and give us a decent chance
of winning the game.
Competition is fierce for the central midfield area
with Rowlands, Mahon and Leigterwood all fit and raring to go. I
think Buzsacky may well come back in the side to play just off the
main striker which would be Blackstock. Rangers could then have
Balanta and Agyemang on the bench to switch to a4 4-4-2 if we wanted
to.
Whoever plays it is likely to be a decent game between
two sides who like to get it down and play and don't really have
a great deal of pressure on them so can relax and just express themselves.
It has been billed as a day to remember and it certainly
should be if these two sides play as they can. West Brom should
be too strong for us but I would expect it to be a far closer game
than it was last September.
