30. Marc Nygaard
Marc Nygaard signed for QPR from Italian side Brescia for an undisclosed fee in
July 2005 after impressing during a short trial. Nygaard is a forward
who was highly rated and wanted by Arsenal before injuries stalled his career
and a disappointing spell in Italy has seen him written off by many. He is looking
to resurrect his career in England though and will be good cover for Paul Furlong
in the Rangers attack. Nygaard has six caps for Denmark mostly
as a substitute and will be hoping to break back into the Denmark team over the
next few months. After some unimpressive displays
in pre season little was expected of the Big Dane who had an injury record that
made Matthew Rose look like Mr ever present.
His debut as a sub against
Ipswich was promising but Nygaard seemed unable to play more than once a week
and with the heavy schedule last season that wasn't idea. Nygaard
picked up niggly injury after niggly injury and another brief appearance at Southampton
offered little hope of what was to come.
At Leicester I remember seeing
Nygaard run on to make his first team debut and was pretty shocked as he'd done
little to warrant a starting place but he quickly impressed and scored his first
goal with a towering header to put us on the way to our first away win of the
season. Nygaard's impressive performance was
quickly followed up by another one at Millwall where he found the target again
but injury again caught up with him and forced him to miss the defeat against
Palace.
Nygaard had similarities with his predecessor Crouch. For a big
man he was decent on the floor and was able to hold the ball up and pick out a
pass, Nygaard was very strong in the air as you'd expect and if the delivery was
good there really is no way to stop him.
His goals per game ration remains
one of the best at the club but his goal against Norwich was his last for a while
as injury ruled him out for two months. He
returned against Cardiff and it was no surprise to see him back on the score sheet
getting the only goal in a 1-0 win. He continued his frustrating injury record
though missing a few more games before returning to the side jus before Ian Holloway's
departure.
Nygaard enjoyed an injury free month, which was rare for the
big striker, and he showed his best scoring twice in a month in key wins over
Millwall and Sheffield United.
As the season came to an end Nygaard continued
to score goals although his performances were disappointing. One minute he would
look unplayable and the next he's look completely useless.
This season
Nygaard has done little to impress the new manager with some poor performances
up front but he remains the main back up striker that we have and looks set to
play a big part in the last few months of the season.
