As
part of Kevin Gallen's testimonial a legends match was arranged between QPR and
Chelsea. The match kicked off before the ore season game against Birmingham and
was great fun.
The legends team Started off
with a team of Hucker, Penrice (at right back), McDonald and Maddix. Francis,
Waddock and Holloway were in midfield with Fereday on the right and Ferdinand/Stainrod
up front. The rest of the team was taken up
with supporters who had bid the highest on ebay for a place in the starting eleven.
Chelsea team of Legends were unrecognisable
to be honest apart from Clive Walker who hasn't changed in 20 years. They also
had Ray Wilkins playing for them although he would swap teams at half time. Stan
Bowles kicked the game off but was unable to take part in the game properly. The
game was played at a slow pace but Rangers looked the better side. Alan
McDonald was taking no prisoners at the back and Gary Waddock slid in with a typical
strong challenge on Clive Walker. Rangers
almost grabbed the lead after Ferdinand headed a nice cross from Ian Holloway
straight at the keeper. Sir les is still looking for a club for next season and
still looked as fit and strong as he did ten years ago. He played the hole game
with a smile on his face which was great to see. There
was nearly a goal of the season contender early on. A wonderful one touch build
up between Francis, Stainrod and Ferdinand cut Chelsea open but Francis couldn't
finish off what was almost of a repeat of his goal of the season back in 1975/76.
Rangers took the lead through Wayne Fereday
after being teed up by Stainrod he headed into an empty net from close range.
It was 2-0 before half time when Les Ferdinand found the bottom corner. Most
of the legends showed they still have it. Maddix and McDonald just haven't changed
and were quality as was Stainrod who was just taking the piss with some of his
skill. Kevin Gallen came on during the first
half as a few of the older players got tired and after 25 minutes the ref blew
for half time. After a short drinks break where some team photos were taken we
were off again. It wasn't long before it was
3-0 as Ian Holloway shocked the crowd with a cracking shot from just inside the
box. He celebrated with a smile on his face and lets hope a few of the first team
midfielders were watching how to break into the box and score a goal. After
that it got a bit embarrassing as it became clear we'd get at least six. Another
ebay winner came on and two of them got on the score sheet. The first was from
the left back who smashed it in after a neat build up. The
other was a cracking header from the one of the number 10's who looked quite impressive.
Les Ferdinand made sure we had a repeat of
Easter Monday 1986 with his second goal ands Stainrod almost made it seven as
he tried to score from a corner but it drifted over the bar. Chelsea
tried to get a goal back but two brilliant tackles from Alan Mcdonald denied them
as Hucker didn't have a save to make. Kevin
Gallen came back on again for the last few minutes and linked brilliantly with
Les Ferdinand bringing back memories of Gallen's first season in the Premiership
ten years ago. At the end of the game both
sides got a standing ovation for some excellent entertainment and it was great
to see some of our heroes of the past playing in the hoops again, plus it is always
good to see Rangers beat Chelsea 6-0. Here
are a collection of Photographs from the game. Click
