40. Richard Langley

Richard
came through the youth team at QPR impressing in the youth and reserve teams.
He made his full debut at Swindon as a substitute. His impressive performance
saw him start against Barnsley where he got his first goal for the club. He has
been compared with Nigel Quashie but doesn't seem as strong on the ball as the
former QPR midfielderl. Richard is the one player of genuine class and quality
who we should look to build the team around.
Richard's qualities are
his passing and vision. He has a very relaxed style which has worked against him
in a division where strength and stamina is more important than skill and vision.
Richard is also excellent at tacking and has all the ingredients to become
a very good player.
Unfortunately injury put a halt to his progress and
a serious knee injury meant he missed out on the last few months of our relegation
season and the start of the following season.
Richard started out on
the right before moving back in the middle where he is happiest and showed what
a good player he can be. He free kicks became his trademark as he began to score
more and more of them which may have prompted David Beckham to copy Langley's
haircut as he did in the summer of 2003.
Langley ended the season back
on the right wing where his goals helped Rangers get into the playoffs. Langley
scored a vital goal in the playoff semi final before being sent off. It was a
tough way to end the season as he missed out on playing in the final and was badly
missed.
Richard
Langley tends to score spectacular goals and had seven of his ten goals voted
for as goal of the season. His finished the season with his best ever goalscoring
return getting into double figures which is excellent for a midfield player.
Blackpool
must hate the sight of him as Langley scored the goal of the season against them
in 2001/02 and added three more contenders in the 2002/03 season when he scored
four times against the seasiders.
Langley left QPR after scoring
in thsi first two games of the 2003/04 season. He joined the team which beat QPR
in the playoff final, Cardiff City in a deal worth £250,000.
Richard
Langley then returned to QPR on transfer deadline day 2005 in a one-year deal
from Cardiff. Langley had a trial at Crystal Palace that came to nothing and as
the deadline approached QPR made their move for Langley after the cup defeat to
Northampton.
Langley
agreed a one-year deal with an option to extend and completed the deal this morning.
Langley is seen by many as the missing piece in the QPR jigsaw. Langley's move
to Cardiff caused some controversy with many fans upset at Langley leaving to
join the team who beat us in the playoff final. Of course Langley missed that
final due to suspension and even Langley himself expects a hard time from some
QPR fans.
But that's all in the past now and the fact remains
it was Ian Holloway's decision to sell Langley to Cardiff and Langley had little
to do with it. He was out of contract the following summer but wanted to stay.
Rangers offered him a new deal on less money and with Holloway wanting a new left
winger and forward a deal was done to sell Langley and bring in Mcleod and Tony
Thorpe.
Since then the story has been changed by fans on the
Internet but Langley has always remained a QPR man at heart and regularly keeps
in touch with Bircham and Danny Shittu as well as several QPR fans. His family
are still regulars at Loftus Road.
Speaking on his own website,
Langley had this to say on the move: "I'm delighted to announce on my official
icons website that I've re-signed for QPR this morning. It's initially only for
a year, but there are options for me to stay beyond the end of the season we'll
have to see how things go."
"Things weren't going so
well at Cardiff at the start of the season and I was told to find myself a new
club. I went training with Crystal Palace for a couple of days, but it didn't
work out as well as I'd hoped Then I got a call from Tim Breacker on the day of
QPR's match with Sheffield Wednesday asking me if I wanted a game!"
"But I spoke to Ian
Holloway more recently, and after a lot of discussions between the clubs, both
Cardiff and QPR were happy for me to come back here on a free, so here I am."
"I'm really excited and so are my family. They've been
urging me to come back to QPR for a while. And the response I've had from fans
and everyone I've met in West London has been fantastic.
It
means so much to be wanted, and to come to a club like this and to be wanted is
amazing. It feels like I'm coming home. I know all the faces at QPR and even though
I made friends at Cardiff, nothing beats coming back to my boyhood club."
"How do I feel about moving to Cardiff now? Well, I didn't ask for a move,
and I certainly wasn't looking to leave Rangers. My hand was forced going there
in the first place. I didn't know they were interested in me until I got a call
from Ian Holloway saying I should go to speak to them and it all happened from
there."
"I had a good time in Cardiff, I made some good
friends, and I feel as if I'm coming back a better and more mature player. Little
bits of my game have improved, and I feel the best of me is yet to come."
Langley
made his second debut for Rangers at Southampton and has once again become a regular
in Ian Holloway's side but this time it's as a central midfield player rather
than on the right.
