21. Paul Jones

Paul Jones answered the SOS from Gary Waddock when we had no fit goalkeepers and Jones signed for free from Wolves until the end of the season.

He made his debut in Gary Waddock's first match in charge against Millwall and played in every other game until the end of the season.

Jones made a sold start looking comfortable in the win over Millwall and the defeat at palace but it was in the next few weeks that he came into his own.

At Sheffield United Jones started well as Rangers raced into an early lead but we found ourselves 2-1 down at the start of the second when a dodgy penalty was given. Paul Ifill stepped up but Jones produced a magnificent save to keep the home side out.

Jones's save proved to be a crucial one and Rangers went on to win the game 3-1. His form went from good to great over the next few weeks. He was excellent for his country against Paraguay before returning to face his old club Wolves and making several spectacular saves.

First Alliadaire's effort was parried onto the post, Cort got the rebound on target but Jones got up and saved again pushing against the post before Shittu cleared to a huge cheer and a standing ovation.

Jones was making save after save as Rangers were picking up a few draws, he was getting a reputation for double saves producing some quality ones against Wolves, Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday. Towards the end of the season results began to go against us but Jones continued to perform well.

Despite some excellent performances I was a little surprised to see Jones given a new one year contract at the end of the season.

Considering his age (39) and the fact we have three other goalkeepers it is a little strange to see him kept on but no one can doubt the mans ability and if called upon next season I'm sure he'll do well for the team.
