Heider Helguson joined QPR on loan in November 2008 before making a £1million move to Rangers in January 2009.
Helguson missed an open goal with his first touch of the ball in a QPR shirt at Crystal Palace but scored his first goal a few weeks later in the draw at Plymouth. He grabbed two more goals in the win over Preston but he found goals harder to come by after he signed in January scoring just two more both at Blackpool.
Helguson has always been a bit of a Kevin Davies type player, excellent in the air for his size, a real competitor and someone who can hold the ball up to bring others into play. He did all these things well at Rangers but struggled with injuries and by the start of the 2009/10 season his days at QPR looked numbered. He scored at Plymouth but was still missing some unbelievable chances and was loaned out to Watford where he had a decent season scoring double figures for them.
The arrival of Neil Warnock saw Helguson given a fresh chance, a new style of play saw Helguson as the figurehead of the team with the likes of Taarabt, Smith, Ephraim and Mackie playing off his hold up play. Helguson quickly established himself as a regular under Warnock and a key part of the team. He still missed good chances but his work rate for the team was not going unnoticed and we always looked a better side when he was playing.
Helguson had a good run in February/March where he scored six goals in six games to help open up a lead at the top that was never surpassed. His performance away at Barnsley was heroic at times fighting for every ball and giving everything he had to make sure we won that game.
He ended the season with thirteen goals and has turned his QPR career around to become a key player for Neil Warnocks Championship winning team.
