4. Ian Evatt
Ian
Evatt arrived at Loftus Road with a good reputation and was even compared to Glenn
Roeder but Ian Holloway but things didn't quite work out for him. An
injury in pre season saw him miss the start of the season before he made a forgettable
debut at Northampton getting sent off and making Eric Sabin look like Thierry
Henry. His league debut wasn't much better but in fairness to him right back never
looked his best position and he looked out of place until moved to the middle
in the 3-1 defeat at Wolves. A lack of pace was beginning
to look a real problem especially with the defence pushing up with a high line.
Evatt was often getting caught out especially in home games. Away from home though
he looked far better where we defended deeper and on the ball he looked a decent
player bringing the ball from the back and spraying some nice passes around. His
partnership with Shittu though never looked the best and in November/December
it completely fell apart with pacy attacks from Watford and Hull tearing the former
Chesterfield man apart. He was placed on the transfer list in January with his
QPR career looking as good as over. Like Milanese though a
change of manager brought with it a change of fortune and Evatt was back in the
first team and a regular for the rest of the season. Unlike Milanese though Evatt
never really took his chance and didn't really give the impression that he has
it in him to make it at this level. He was too easily brushed
off the ball at Crystal Palace leaving commentator Dave Basset to suggest "Evatt
has gone down easier than my daughter" which perhaps says more about
Mr. Bassets daughter than Ian Evatt. Evatt ended the season
a regular in the first team but didn't do enough to convince Gary Waddock and
looks likely to leave this summer probably to a league one club.
Evatt has been one of the biggest disappointments for me this season. He
came with a good reputation and certainly has ability but never really looked
settled at Loftus Road. Plus I always think a defender who wears shiny white boots
is not sending out a great message and he always seemed better on the ball than
he did defending, perhaps a future as a midfield player is a possibility for him.
