20. Scott Donnelly
Scott Donnelly has come through the QPR youth set up made his debut at just 16
years of age coming off the bench in the 2-1 defeat at Preston North End. Donnelly
played in the successful under 17's team which enjoyed plenty of success losing
just two games. He played in a variety of positions in midfield and up front and
always looked hugely promising with bags of skill and a good eye for goal. He
broke into the reserve team in 2004 and scored three goals in his six starts for
the reserves which is pretty impressive for a 15 year old midfield player. Some
of his goals and performances had the watching fans on their feet. His
range of passing, long distance shooting and skills has seen most fans who watch
the reserves drool in anticipation of this kid breaking into the first team but
an injury-plagued season in 2004/05 hampered his progress. It seemed that the
coaching staff were not sure of his best position, which is still a problem that
remains today.
Donnelly was a regular for the reserves in the first half
of the season playing well on both wings, central midfield and even upfront in
some games. His first taste of life in the first team this season came as a substitute
in the draw with Burnley. Donnelly came on in
the second half in central midfield and looked impressive in a brief cameo role.
He really came into his own a week later as a second half sub at premiership Blackburn.
Donnelly was outstanding when he came on. He slotted into the left wing
position and his range of passing, dribbling and shooting was outstanding. He
set up two clear-cut chances from curling free kicks whilst one wonderful 50 yard
through ball should have produced a goal for Baidoo.
Donnelly certainly
won his admirers that day but had to wait another month for this first start,
which came at Crystal palace. Donnelly set up Rangers only goal of the game with
a lovely cross but a familiar story followed as he picked up a niggly injury and
missed several games at a time when he could have made a first team spot his own.
Gary Waddock gave Donnelly a late chance as the youngster impressed in
the draw with Derby and again in the defeat at reading where he went close to
grabbing his first goal on several occasions.
Donnelly has been seen
as the great hope from the youth team in recent years but he returned from pre
season over weight and looks to be on his way out of the club which is a terrible
shame considering how much talent the boy has.
