Dave Clement R.I.P.

Graeme Wiles has written the following article on one of his favourite ever QPR players.

Dave Clement was born on the second of February 1948 in Battersea. He signed for Queens Park Rangers in July of 1965 as a centre half. He was an England youth international and made his debut for Q.P.R in 1966 against Scunthorpe at Loftus Road, playing centre half.

Due to an injury crisis at the start of the next season, Dave was forced to play at right back against Portsmouth, as Ian Watson was unavailable. He was tall, extremely fast and he was a very good tackler. He also had a shot like a bullet. During this season Q.P.R won promotion to division one for the first time in the clubs history.

From 1966 to 1971 he played 82 times and scored 6 goals. In the early 70's he played a lot of games as right or left back and also at centre half. In Rangers promotion year to the top division (1972-1973) Dave played 40 games for Q.P.R scoring 3 goals at right back.

Dave was now starting to get recognised for his ability to get forward at pace to get crosses and shots in. His Tackling ability made him very difficult to beat.

When Dave Sexton arrived to replace Gordon Jago as manager, Clement was perfect to play the total football that Sexton wanted. Rangers, at that time had a lop-sided look, with Dave Thomas on the left wing but no right winger. But Clements ability to get from box to box to chase Masson's and Francis' through-balls balanced the side.

It was at this time (1975-76) Dave was also beginning to be noticed for England. During that season he got 3 caps. The 1975-1976 season Q.P.R finished second in the top division, which was and is our best finish.

Dave ended up with five England caps but you would think that if he had been playing for a bigger team, he would have got more, like most of the other Rangers player's. In all from 1966 to 1978, Dave Clement played 405 times for Rangers, scoring 22 fantastic goals.

Two to remember are, the one at Chelsea on Boxing Day and the one against the then champions Derby at the Baseball Ground in a Rangers 5-1 demolition job.

Dave then went to Bolton Wanderers were he played 33 games, but did not score any goals. He then joined Fulham and played a further 18 games before retiring from the game of football. It is fair to say that Dave Clement was part of Q.P.R's greatest team and is arguably Rangers best ever full back
