Dexter Blackstock joined QPR from Southampton in August 2006 for a fee said to be around £400,000, the highest paid by QPR this century. Blackstock had been at Southampton since he was a schoolboy but found first team opportunities hard to come by.

When he joined I asked a Southampton fan about him and his response was he works hard but couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo. Another Southampton fan though was more positive saying that once he starts scoring he won't stop and was gutted to see him go.

Those descriptions appeared to be backed up in his early performances. He showed plenty of promise and ability on his debut against Southend but couldn't find the back of the net. His work rate was second to none and he linked well with Ray Jones but goals were not easy to come by in his first few games.

Dexter's first goal for QPR came against his former club Plymouth and as suggested by Saints fans it set him off on an impressive run. In John Gregory's first two games he scored vital goals to help the team to victory. He scored the killer second goal in the win over Hull, which saw us move off the bottom of the league. The following week Dexter returned to his former club Southampton and almost inevitably he found the back of the net to draw us level before helping the team on to an impressive win.

The goals continued to flow for Dexter as he grabbed two at Sheffield Wednesday as well as the winner at Luton in November. He was earning plenty of plaudits for his all round game. Dexter was covering every blade of grass to chase lost causes and work hard for the team, which was great to see.

Dexter was also one of the unluckiest players I've ever seen in front of goal. During a barren run which saw him fail to score for ten games every shot that hit the target was either met with an amazing save, cleared off the line and on one occasion hit one of our own players to deflect wide.

He never let his head drop though and he was soon back among the goals scoring in the cup draw with Luton and in the 2-1 defeat at Hull.

A minor injury saw him miss the games at Derby and Leicester and his return to the side at the end of March saw him go on a run of form that would play a huge part in keeping us up.

He came on as a sub against West Brom and with his first touch he met a cross to head past the keeper to draw us level. Days later he netted the goal of the season winner with the only goal of the game against Preston. The goal will be remembered for a long time at Loftus Road and the confidence this must have given Dexter was immense.

For a player so young he was growing into a man in front of our eyes and the goals continued. He showed tremendous bottle to take a penalty against Luton under severe provocation from Richard Langley but he ignored it and scored his second of the afternoon as we ran out 3-2 winners.

His fourteenth and final goal of the season came as we beat Cardiff 1-0 to secure Championship football.

Dexter is an incredibly hard working player who has bags of ability and potential. He's the first player under the age of 22 to get into double figures for a season since Peter Crouch so he's not in bad company and was a clear winner for this web sites young player of the season.

This season though Dexter has struggled with injuries and form. He scored on the opening day of the season against Bristol City but failed to score again in 2007.

The death of Ray Jones appeared to hit Dexter hard as the two of them were close friends and Dexter has not looked the same since. Dexter needed an operation in October to sort out a knee problem and his return to the side saw some mixed performances.

He finally got back on the scoresheet during the win against Leicester City on New years Day. Since then Blackstock has been in and out of the side but has started to rediscover his goal touch scoring four times in five games to end the season on a personal high.
