Stefan Bailey is a product of the QPR
youth system.
He joined Rangers after being spotted playing in the Middlesex County
League Premier Division for Willesden Constantine. Bailey is the
latest in a long line of players to make the breakthrough to league
football after playing for Willesden.
Former Rangers midfielder Richard Langley, Junior Agogo, Enoch Showumni
and Margate playmaker Rocky Baptiste have all come through the Constantine
ranks.
Bailey made his debut as a substitute at Sheffield United and immediately
impressed the QPR fans. He was quick t get stuck in and win the
ball back and also used the ball well with simple passes to team
mates and a few clever through balls to the forwards.
At times he got caught in possession but for his debut it was very
encouraging. He made his first start a week later against Leeds
United.
Stefan looked
set for a season in the reserves and that's where he stayed until
an injury crisis saw the youngster thrown in for the game against
Wolves at Loftus Road. Despite being up against some top players
such as Ince and Anderton the youngster more than held his own producing
some solid tackles and he used the ball well.
That performance earned him a few more fans at Loftus Road bur he
didn't reappear in the first team for a month.
Bailey started the home game against Derby and his impressive performance
has seen him become a regular in the first team ever since. Bailey
is strong in the tackle and similar in many ways to Marcus Bean.
One major difference
though is that Bailey seems to have more awareness on the ball than
Bean did at this stage of his career and as the youngster grew in
confidence during games he began to try several ambitious passes
which was good to see.
He was excellent in the games against Norwich, Derby and Reading
but to his credit the performance against Watford was most telling.
He was desperately struggling against a strong side but never let
his head drop and ended the game strongly.
Despite only making five starts during in the 2005/06 season he
did enough to win your vote as the young player of the season.
Last season he
started in the reserves but broke into the side when John Gregory
arrived and impressed in the wins over Hull and Southampton. He
also did well in the wins over Cardiff and Luton but he has struggled
to become a regular in the first team after his red card in the
FA CUp defeat at Luton.
Sadly for Stefan
his first team chances have been few and far between this season
and he looks likely to leave the club this summer.
