22. Shabazz Baidoo
Shabazz
Baidoo is another product of the QPR youth system.
The pacy forward was
signed from Arsenal as a youngster and continued his development under the guidance
of Joe Gallen and Gary Waddock.
The youngster is highly thought oat Rangers
and this season he has scored 18 goals in 16 games for the youth team which is
impressive for a 16 year old playing against players a few years older than him.
He made his first team debut as a substitute against
Gillingham and impressed enough to get another chance off the bench against Leeds.
In that second appearance he set up the equalising goal for Kevin Gallen and earned
plenty of plaudits from the QPR fans.
Baidoo started the next two games
at Burnley and Wigan where his pace and movement was excellent and having just
turned 17 he looks to have a big future ahead of him. Last
season he finally got the chance to break into the first team. After
impressing for the reserves and under 18's Baidoo featured as a sub in the games
against Crystal Palace and also in the cup defeat at Northampton. The
fans began to call for Baidoo to get a place in the first team but he remained
on the bench until the trip to Plymouth. During
that game with Rangers 3-0 down Holloway threw on the youngster and repaid with
Baidoo scoring his first senior goal within five minutes of coming on. Baidoo
turned in a goal bound effort from a corner and despite the defeat that followed
Baidoo was the name on the fans lips that night. He
won his first start three days later against Preston and again found the target.
His pace caused all sorts of problems for Preston but his early goal was disallowed
for offside and in the end Baidoo ran out of steam as the team lost 2-0. He
was now back on the bench for the next few games before illness and injury disrupted
his first team chances during December. He made a big impact upon his return to
the first team in the 1-0 win over Cardiff. Baidoo came off the bench and stretched
the game as his pace scared the Cardiff defence and although Baidoo didn't score
he did enough to show he could become a first team regular. Baidoo
got his second goal of the season days later in the thrilling 4-3 win over Crewe
and now looked set for an extended run in the side as 2006 began. In
the FA Cup at Blackburn Baidoo was up against a good Premiership side but again
caused problems and on three occasions his pace and movement helped produce good
chances for the youngster but he was unable to convert those chances into goals.
The change of manager didn't have the affect
many expected with Baidoo limited to rare appearances from the bench where Baidoo
failed to impress missing a sitter in the draw with Brighton. It
turned out that talks over a first professional contract were affecting the youngster's
game with his wage demands being a problem but that all got resolved during the
summer as he signed his first professional deal with the club. Baidoo
has been used as a sub for most of this season coming off the bench to score in
the draws with Leeds and Luton but he has yet to break into the team as a regular
starter.
