What's The Ground Like

QPR fans will be in the top tier at Newcastle of the Sir John Hall Stand. There is a climb of 14 flights of stairs to get to the away end so those scared of heights might want to think twice about this one.

The stadium is pretty impressive though and the view from the away end will give you a view of the pitch and most of the city centre.

There are televisions on the concourse with separate refreshment areas which serve alcohol. I was at the ground for the recent Sir Bobby Robson charity match and the view from lower section of the Sir John Hall stand was excellent but you do feel a long way away from the pitch. The atmosphere can be electric at St James Park for big games but is unlikely to be that special when we visit.

If you want a drink before the game you have plenty of choice with the ground being right in the town centre. Away fans tend to favour the around Newcastle Railway Station. The 'A Head Of Steam' 'The Lounge' and 'O'Neills' are all recommended, but some of these bars will only admit fans if colours are covered and none of them admitted children. Also nearby is a Wetherspoons outlet called the Union Rooms.

Alternatively there is Idols which has strippers and is popular with both home and away fans .

How to get There

By Car

Directions from http://www.footballgroundguide.com

At the end of the A1(M) continue on the A1 and then the A184 towards Newcastle. Continue along this road, bearing left onto the A189. Continue over the River Tyne on the Redheugh Bridge, from which the ground can be clearly seen. Carry on straight up the dual carriageway (St James Boulevard). This leads directly to the Gallowgate end of the ground. As the ground is so central there are a number of pay and display car parks in the vicinity.

Jason Adderley a visiting West Brom fan adds; 'An easier way into the City is to stay on the A1 until the exit for Westerhope. Leave the A1 go straight over two roundabouts and then follow the signs for the Royal Victoria Infirmary (Queen Victoria Road) - parking here is in a multi storey and allows a reasonably quick getaway after the game'.

By Train

To go by train will require an over night stay but you can get to Newcastle on the Wednesday and come back on the Thursday for around £80. Newcastle Central Railway Station is half a mile from the ground and takes 10-15 minutes to walk.

To get to the ground come out of the station, across the two zebra crossings and then head up the pedestrianised Pink Lane. Then cross Westgate Road at the top. Then up pedestrianised Bath Lane with the old city walls on your right.

Turn right on to Stowell Street (Chinatown). At the end of Stowell Street bear left up St Andrews Street by Rosie’s Bar, under the ornate Chinese arch. Then left up Gallowgate. St James is on your right.

Player Connections

QPR and Newcastle have shared a few players over the years with one of our best ever moving to St James Park in 1995.

Les Ferdinand spent eight years at QPR scoring 89 goals and will go down as one of the best forwards we ever had. Ferdinand twice scored twenty goals in a season for Rangers including three against his future employers.

He joined Newcastle for £6million in 1995 and the two clubs fortunes quickly changes.

Rangers were relegated after struggling without Ferdinand's goals whilst his goals for Newcastle took them within a whisker of winning the Premiership with only a Cantona inspired Man Utd piping them to the title on the final day of the season.

He won the PFA Players Player of the year in his first year at Newcastle.

Ferdinand spent two years at St James Park and is still highly regarded by the Geordie faithful.

The two Peacock's played for both sides as well. Gavin Peacock began and ended his career at Loftus Road and the midfielder spent one year at St James Park scoring plenty of goals from midfield and helping them to promotion to the Premiership under Kevin Keegan.

Darren Peacock had three years at QPR and was an excellent defender for us and joined Newcastle for £2.75million in March 1994 and he spent several successful years at St James Park.

Previous Meetings

Rangers have not faced Newcastle since 1996 when we were relegated from the premiership.

That season Newcastle did the double over Rangers with Les Ferdinand scoring against QPR in a 3-2 win at Loftus Road. Danny Dichio scored twice for QPR that day in a game we shouldn't have lost.

The return game at St James Park was just as close with ian Holloway giving QPR the lead but two late goals by Peter Beardsley have Newcastle the win.

Rangers last win against Newcastle came in the 1994/95 season when we beat them 3-0 at Loftus Road with Les Ferdinand scoring twice for QPR.
